Stroller-friendly Korean restaurant lunch in Daegu: Taegyeongok

In short

Taegyeongok is a newly opened Korean restaurant right in front of Gyeongbuk Hospital Station in Dongin-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu. Travelling in Daegu with a baby, the writer had lunch at a reserved window table with a small Seoul-style bulgogi hot pot for 28,000 won, six Taegyeongok dumplings for 12,000 won and rice, and the side dishes were refillable. There is no high chair, but strollers can come inside and the public parking lot next door costs 2,000 won per hour, which made Taegyeongok an easy lunch stop with a child.

Lunch at Taegyeongok by Gyeongbuk Hospital Station on a Daegu trip with a baby

Taegyeongok is a Korean restaurant in Dongin-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu, right in front of Gyeongbuk Hospital Station. We were on a trip to Daegu with our baby, partly to get my husband's car wheel repaired. We'd booked a room at the Interburgo and had some time before check-in, so we decided to pick up some room-temperature baby food and grab a meal near downtown Daegu at the same time.

We'd actually come to Gyeongbuk Hospital a few months back for a checkup about our baby's head shape, so it was funny to be back in this neighborhood again. This time we stopped by a Korean restaurant near the station called Taegyeongok (태경옥).

Where Taegyeongok is, opening hours and parking

  • Address: 704-1 Gukchebosang-ro, 1st floor, Jung-gu, Daegu
  • Hours: 11:00–21:30
  • Parking: public lot right next to the restaurant, ₩2,000 per hour

There aren't many places near downtown Daegu with parking right in front, but this one has a public lot close by. Having a baby means we end up seeking out places like this! We parked without any stress and had our meal.

Taegyeongok is a newly opened place — it showed up on Naver as a new business. The interior wasn't huge, but it was a nice quiet spot to eat.

Taegyeongok menu and what we ordered for lunch

Taegyeongok serves yukhoe bibimbap (raw beef tartare over rice), yukhoe mulhoe (cold raw beef soup), Hamhung-style naengmyeon (cold noodles), beef gukbap (beef and rice soup), suyuk jeongol (boiled pork hot pot), Seoul-style bulgogi, suyuk (boiled pork), and more. We ordered the small Seoul-style bulgogi with rice, and six Taegyeongok dumplings.

A lunch spot by day, a Korean restaurant and bar by night

This is a restaurant where you can have a proper meal, but by evening it turns into a place for a drink or two. The space is really clean and tidy. Since it was lunchtime, a lot of nearby office workers were coming in, some eating alone and some in groups.

They brought out a cup of strong, refreshing cold tea. Since we had a reservation, we got a window seat. There was no high chair, but strollers were allowed inside!

Small Seoul-style bulgogi hot pot, 28,000 won: enough for two?

Small Seoul-style bulgogi hot pot, ₩28,000. When I lived up north I saw this kind of grill setup a lot, but it's genuinely hard to find a place selling Seoul-style bulgogi in the Gyeongsang region. You cook the vegetables in the broth, sear the beef bulgogi until it's nicely charred, and dip it in the hot pot broth if you like — eat it however suits your taste.

For big eaters, I'd strongly recommend getting the large size or adding extra noodles even for two people ^~^ My husband and I eat a lot, so the small hot pot felt a bit short. Of course, with rice and six dumplings on the side, we still left full!

The staff adjusts the flame under the mountain of bulgogi for you. The beef bulgogi cooks faster than you'd expect. The bean sprouts on top get dunked into the broth and cook through in no time. It looks a bit like shabu-shabu but it's actually its own thing — beef bulgogi plus steamed vegetables, with a well-seasoned broth that really brings out the vegetables' flavor.

White rice plus meat — need I say more?★ The combination of the sweet-savory broth and beef bulgogi, mixed into the seasoning with rice, disappears in one bowl flat.

What you get in the 12,000 won Taegyeongok dumplings, 6 pieces

Order the six-piece Taegyeongok dumplings for ₩12,000 and you get three meat dumplings and three kimchi dumplings. These feel like genuine handmade dumplings, and I'd guess they're the restaurant's signature dish. The filling is generous and the wrapper is thin and chewy — totally different from the mass-produced kind.

Honest verdict after eating at Taegyeongok with a stroller

Taegyeongok is the kind of place that's a clean, straightforward lunch spot by day and turns into a Korean pub with real atmosphere by night. Since it's newly opened, the interior was spotless, and the owner was extremely kind **

Given its location right in front of Gyeongbuk Hospital Station, I'd recommend it as a Korean restaurant in the Dongin-dong area. Easy parking, close by, and a good restaurant near downtown to bring a baby along to!
