Daebong-dong rice bowl restaurant after weekend break time: Hyangtaek

In short

Hyangtaek Daebong Branch is a Korean rice-bowl and sotbap (cauldron rice) restaurant near Exit 3 of Gyeongbuk University Hospital Station in Daebong-dong, Jung-gu, Daegu. Walking in the moment the weekend break time ended, the writer ordered the mackerel gondre rice bowl and the eggplant doenjang rice bowl, plus the mushroom pancake Hyangtaek serves free for writing a review. Hyangtaek fills up fast enough that a few minutes later would have meant a wait, but the neat side dishes and plating make it a solid pick for a family meal or a date.

Today's post is about Hyangtaek, a Korean restaurant chain that started in Daegu and is spreading nationwide little by little. Everything about it — the food, the interior, the whole vibe — is so clean and tidy that I rushed to write this up for you all!! Let's get right into it!

Where is Hyangtaek Daebong Branch, and what are the hours?

How long is the wait right after weekend break time?

I went the moment weekend break time ended.. and there were so many groups, plus a lot of couples on dates too. If I'd been just a little later I would've had to wait..

Even the water here.. the green tea.. is really good..

Hyangtaek's menu and what we ordered

Looking at the menu, it's built around tidy Korean-style sotbap (cauldron rice) and rice bowl dishes! The number of items isn't huge overall, and it's a clean lineup focused on key ingredients! The trap is that everything looks delicious.. After much deliberation, we went with the signature mackerel gondre rice bowl and eggplant doenjang rice bowl :)

It's an open kitchen, so watching them cook is honestly really fun )(

Soup and side dishes: gungchae namul and jeotgal (salted seafood)

Before the meal comes out, the soup and side dishes arrive — the food is already tasty, but plated in pretty little dishes it somehow tastes even better, placebo effect and all.. ㅜㅡㅜ Try the gungchae namul (dried radish-leaf greens) and jeotgal (salted seafood) — they're genuinely delicious.. good enough to open a side-dish shop,,

(Drumroll.. the food arrived..) First, the eggplant rice bowl — why is it so cute.. almost too pretty to eat ㅋㅜ

(Next up, the gondre mackerel rice bowl!) The mackerel portion is so generous and there's a hearty layer of gondre (dried thistle greens) underneath!

And the mushroom pancake they give out when you write a review! Everyone, make sure to write one — it's seriously, ridiculously good 🍓🍓

How does the eggplant doenjang rice bowl taste with kelp vinegar?

The eggplant doenjang rice bowl is grilled until golden brown outside, with the eggplant melting soft and tender inside — an amazing texture — while the special savory doenjang sauce soaks all the way into the eggplant, hitting you with salty, faintly sweet, deeply savory flavor all at once..

With big chunks of eggplant and doenjang seasoning, it could get a little heavy, but a few drops of the accompanying kelp vinegar mixed in and — the tangy sourness cuts the doenjang's weight beautifully, letting you enjoy it cleanly to the very last bite. A real standout dish among standouts ♥️

Mackerel gondre rice, the Hyangtaek signature

The mackerel gondre rice is Hyangtaek's signature dish — golden, nutty grilled mackerel with a clean flavor, paired with the fragrant, tender gondre namul. No fishy taste at all, just a clean yet deeply savory flavor that's really great..??

Gently mash the generous chunk of mackerel and mix it through the gondre rice..

and the savory aroma of the seasoning plus the greens' slight bitterness pairs perfectly with the mackerel's nuttiness. Add a bit of the sauce to taste, or pair it with the side dishes, for a clean, no-fuss healthy meal, done!

Eating this along with the side dishes and gim (seaweed sheets) that come with it is the icing on the cake..!!

The free mushroom pancake for writing a review

Hyangtaek's mushroom pancake is a popular side dish made by frying assorted mushrooms until golden — crisp on the outside while the inside keeps the mushrooms' chewy texture and juiciness intact!! (And this is free if you write a review!!!)

It maximizes the mushrooms' own nutty, subtle aroma so you can enjoy it cleanly without any greasiness, and dipping it lightly in the special spicy-sweet or salty soy sauce brings the crispy batter and savory mushroom flavor together, adding to the fullness of the main dish.. ah, I want to eat it again ㅎ

Is Hyangtaek Daebong Branch worth a visit?

(And that's how well we ate before heading out!) Hyangtaek is a place that takes familiar Korean ingredients and gives them a modern touch, delivering a tidy, well-rounded meal! From the crisp-outside-tender-inside eggplant doenjang rice bowl to the wonderfully nutty mackerel gondre rice and the crispy, chewy mushroom pancake — every dish delivers clean, deep flavor without missing a beat. If you want a clean, satisfying Korean meal, this is a place I'd recommend for family meals, dates, or gatherings alike — definitely worth a visit :)
