Chowol eatery for pork duruchigi with cheese egg roll: Oneuldo Utja

Ordering pork duruchigi and sotbap at Oneuldo Utja Chowol

I had a reason to eat around Chowol after a while, and while figuring out where to go, I ended up at Oneuldo Utja.

There were two of us that day, so we ordered two servings of pork duruchigi, cheese egg roll (chijeu gyeranmari), and even sotbap on top.

We kind of went all out on the order from the start haha. I thought this would be enough for two people... but spoiler: we walked out completely stuffed haha.

Why pork duruchigi tastes best with rice

Sitting down and waiting after picking the menu, the wait felt especially long — probably because I was hungry ㅠㅠ. But when the pork duruchigi came out, the look of it alone made me think of rice.

The sauce was rich and bold, so it went great with rice — one bite of meat, one spoonful of rice, over and over, my hand just kept reaching for it. Duruchigi really does taste best with rice, right? haha.

The sauce wasn't too mild but also wasn't overwhelming to keep eating, so my chopsticks kept going back in. I think rice matters a lot with a dish like this, and I was glad we'd ordered sotbap alongside it.

And then the cheese egg roll we also ordered! Honestly, before going I wondered if we really needed to order an egg roll on top of pork duruchigi, but once it landed on the table, my mind changed haha.

Since the duruchigi was spicy and rich, eating the egg roll in between made the flavors go down more smoothly. The cheese added a nice savory note too.

Personally, I think this combo works really well. Eating duruchigi non-stop can get a bit intense, but having the egg roll in between balanced things out nicely haha. It was also good for sharing between two people, and it's a great add-on when you want an extra side dish with your rice.

And the thing I was quietly looking forward to that day was the sotbap. Isn't there something exciting about a pot of sotbap even before you lift the lid? Maybe that's just me haha.

I opened the lid, checked the rice, and dug right in — piping hot rice really does feel different from regular steamed rice. Topping it with the duruchigi sauce turned out to be a pretty great combo.

Meat + sauce + warm sotbap. Need I say more... the rice just keeps going down haha. Even though I already felt pretty full, it was the kind of flavor that kept me eating.

Was two servings filling enough for two people?

In the end, what we ordered that day was two servings of pork duruchigi, cheese egg roll, and sotbap — a pretty hearty spread for two.

At first I thought, 'is this too much?' but the problem is we ended up finishing it all haha. The duruchigi especially disappeared faster than expected once paired with rice, and the egg roll kept getting picked at until the plate was suddenly empty.

Ah... after finishing, I was so full I just sat there spacing out for a moment haha. But that's part of the happiness of a good meal, right?

When you want a proper Korean meal in Chowol, Gwangju

Based on this visit, I'd say this isn't really a place for a light bite — it's more the kind of spot that comes to mind when you want to eat a proper meal. The pork duruchigi and sotbap combo is hard to go wrong with, and adding the cheese egg roll made the overall menu pretty satisfying.

I think it'll taste even better if you go in hungry haha. I was so full leaving that I told myself 'next time I'll order a bit less,' but thinking about it again, I probably can't give up the cheese egg roll... haha.

If you want a hearty meal in Chowol, Oneuldo Utja is worth a visit. If you're like me and enjoy the duruchigi-with-rice combo, I think you'll be quite satisfied :)
