I finally finished the written exam for my vocational counselor certification, which I'd been prepping for between classes and stolen bits of time. Woohoo~ It was a CBT exam, so the score popped up the second I finished — my heart nearly exploded. Thankfully I did well! Vocational counselor…? What even is that, haha

The practical exam is still ahead, but I cleared one big hurdle, so I figured my husband and I deserved a celebration dinner. Shouting "Tonight we're greasing up, no matter what!", I searched around and we headed to Geobugi Dongne, an aged-meat specialty restaurant in Sanbon.

I didn't manage it, but you should definitely book through Naver Reservation and grab the 100g pork belly coupon.

The walk from Sanbon Station Exit 3 and the vibe inside

The restaurant is right near Exit 3 of Sanbon Station, so it was very easy to reach by public transit. Turns out it's on the 2nd floor above the Samtong Chicken I'd been to before...? Haha. Yes, I'm not great with directions.

Parking is the one small downside — there's no dedicated lot, so you'll need to use a nearby public parking area. Weekend evenings or peak hours can bring a decent wait, but I visited on a weekday afternoon and got seated instantly thanks to the spacious hall!

The tables are spaced generously apart, making for a private meal without the usual smoky, greasy feel of a barbecue joint — great for family gatherings, dates, or group meetups alike.

The menu and the self-bar spread

I browsed the tablet menu slowly. There was a wide range from à la carte meat dishes to set menus, and the prices were shockingly reasonable given today's dining costs.

Geobugi Dongne's signature dishes are aged pork belly, pork neck, and pork jowl (hangjeongsal). Note that a ₩5,000 table setting fee (self-bar usage fee) applies per table. It felt a little odd at first, but once you actually use the self-bar, that thought disappears entirely.

Fresh wrap vegetables, plus onions, sliced scallions, bean sprouts, various pickles, fresh kimchi salad, and a whole range of sauces — filled generously and cleanly, rivaling a decent buffet. Between the two of us, we ordered plenty: the couple set (500g), freshly-cooked cauldron rice, countryside vegetable doenjang stew (for 2), and bibim mak-guksu (spicy mixed buckwheat noodles).

The value for money was genuinely great... so we kept adding to our plates until the table was completely full.

As soon as the thick cuts hit the well-heated grill, that satisfying sizzle and savory meat aroma started filling the air. The cuts were fairly thick, so we seared the outside first to lock in the juices.

I tried the first well-cooked piece with just a touch of salt. Behind the crisp exterior it was chewy yet tender, and rich juices burst out in my mouth.

A dab of sharp wasabi, or wrapping it up with fresh lettuce, scallions, and grilled mushrooms from the self-bar, kept every bite interesting — never got tired of it.

Cauldron rice, doenjang stew, and bibim mak-guksu

Most barbecue places just give you plain steamed rice, so getting freshly-cooked cauldron rice was the most exciting part for me. I made sure to scoop the rice out and pour hot water into the cauldron for a nutty, scorched-rice sungnyung (rice water) at the end.

The doenjang stew arrived bubbling, with just a hint of cheonggukjang (fermented soybean) aroma, packed generously with tofu, mushrooms, zucchini, peppers, and more — deep, savory broth.

Mixing the freshly-cooked rice with a piece of meat on top was an absolutely perfect combo. I also wrapped the pork jowl in the mak-guksu noodles — the nutty flavor was out of this world.

Four visit tips

  • ✔️ Use nearby public parking: the easiest route is parking at the Sanbon Rodeo Street on-street/underground public lots or the Sanbon Station transfer public parking lot, then walking over.
  • ✔️ Order the cauldron rice first: cooking starts once you order and takes about 10–15 minutes. Order it along with your first round of meat so it arrives without breaking the flow of grilling.
  • ✔️ Grab self-bar grilling extras: besides wrap vegetables, there's bean sprouts, kimchi, and more that taste great grilled on the pan — pick what you like and toss it on.
  • ✔️ Choose your seat wisely: tables fill up fast and you'll be making frequent trips to the self-bar, so an inner seat close to the self-bar with more room is recommended.

You can take ice cream with you on the way out, so don't forget!! The ice cream is excellent too 🫠

It was such a hearty dinner that all the anxiety from exam prep just melted away. We ordered an enormous amount of food, but the value and quality were both so good I doubt I'll be craving meat again anytime soon, haha. If you want a clean, comfortable space and properly aged meat near Sanbon Station, I recommend Geobugi Dongne Gunpo Sanbon Branch.
