Went out for dinner in downtown Gwangju and ended up at Jeju Oktop JEJU BBQ, Gwangju Gyeongan Branch! It's a Jeju black pork specialty place where the staff grill the meat for you, so I got to eat comfortably haha.

The stone walls and dol hareubang (stone grandfather statues) out front made the Jeju concept obvious even from a distance lol. Just looking at the entrance felt like arriving at a Jeju-style BBQ place 🌴

The dry-aging cabinet and Jeju-style interior at Jeju Oktop

The dry-aging space was the first thing that caught my eye as soon as I walked in! You could see the meat aging inside, and it built up expectations before we'd even eaten 👀 But wait, is this Jeju Island? lol With the dol hareubang and basalt-textured interior, the atmosphere was surprisingly on point — more Jeju than Jeju itself, honestly 🍊

The inside of the restaurant was overall dark-toned, giving it a calm feel, and there were rows of tables lined up on both sides!

Table setting and side dishes after booking Jeju Oktop on Naver

We booked through Naver, so the basic setup was already prepared for us and we were seated right away haha. The meat itself matters, of course, but I also love places with plenty of side dishes to snack on in between — so this spread was quite satisfying!

The menu ranged from à la carte items to sets, but since we wanted to try several cuts at once, we ordered the Signature BBQ A Set! For the main cut, you could choose from pork neck, fresh short ribs, or shoulder rack, and we went with fresh short ribs ✨ There was even a tiny dol hareubang decoration on top, another Jeju touch lol.

Before grilling started in earnest, the staff first oiled the grill plate.

How the staff grill the thick black pork for you

Since the staff grill the meat here, I liked that we could just relax and eat the thick-cut black pork without worrying about doneness haha. The cuts were pretty thick, and if I'd grilled them myself, I probably would've struggled with the timing — but they flipped and cut it at just the right moment, so all we had to do was wait and eat!

After the surface browned nicely, they cut it into bite-sized pieces and cooked it through so the inside stayed juicy.

What the black pork fresh short ribs taste like

The fresh short ribs had just the right amount of fat without being greasy, and the juices were still alive in there 🤤 The zucchini, mushrooms, and green onion grilled alongside soaked up a bit of the meat fat and tasted even better than eating them plain, and adding bracken fern made the combination work really well.

Dipped it lightly in salt sometimes, and wrapped it up in lettuce with various toppings too!

Next up: black pork belly

While we were eating the fresh short ribs, they timed it perfectly and started grilling the black pork belly next.

The skin on the belly was pretty thick, so it had a good chewy bite.

Dipping it lightly in the green-onion sauce made it even better...

Finishing the set with black pork skin

Lastly, the skin was placed on the grill and pressed down while cooking, so the outside crisped up slightly while the inside kept a chewy texture.

And of course, dipping the skin in soybean powder is the unwritten rule!

Earning points with the returnX app at Jeju Oktop

After we finished eating, the owner also told us about the returnX app. After visiting the store, you sign up and take a photo of your receipt to earn points! It's an easy way to earn points off the receipt you get after paying, so if you're already visiting, it might be worth checking out too haha.

Is Jeju Oktop Gwangju Gyeongan worth a visit?

From the Jeju-style interior to the fact that they grill the thick-cut black pork for you, this place was satisfying overall! Best of all, being able to try fresh short ribs, belly, and skin all in one sitting suited my taste for sampling a little bit of many cuts.

If you're looking for black pork in Gyeongan-dong, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, or just want to enjoy meat comfortably without grilling it yourself, I'd recommend Jeju Oktop JEJU BBQ, Gwangju Gyeongan Branch 😊
