Group dinner of hot-plate squid at Haetan, a Seolleung restaurant
In short
Haetan Seolleung Branch is a Korean restaurant specializing in hot-plate squid stir-fry, on the second floor of a building near Exit 2 of Seolleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul. On a Friday evening with friends, the Haetan Combo Set arrived with squid stir-fry, bossam (boiled pork), spicy squid salad and fried squid, and the hot plate kept the stir-fry warm down to the last bite. With bean sprout cold soup at the self-serve bar and soft-serve ice cream on the way out, Haetan Seolleung Branch is an easy pick for sharing a meal with a group.

I had a dinner plan near Seolleung Station and was trying to figure out what to eat, when squid stir-fry popped into my head — so I headed to Haetan Seolleung Branch. The area around Seolleung Station is full of office workers, so on weekday evenings you end up looking for a restaurant good for company dinners or get-togethers. This time I ordered the Haetan Combo Set, perfect for sharing a bunch of dishes with a group, so here's my review!

How to walk there from Seolleung Station
A 10-minute walk from Exit 2 of Seolleung Station.
What the building and entrance look like
Haetan Seolleung Branch is on the 2nd floor of the building, and even on a first visit it wasn't hard to find.

The building had an elevator, but I walked up, and as soon as I got to the top, Haetan was right there in front of me.

If there's a wait, you write your name at the entrance and wait your turn. If you'd rather skip the wait, book ahead through Naver Reservation :)

Inside Haetan Seolleung Branch and the self-serve bar
Right in front of the entrance at Haetan Seolleung Branch is a self-serve bar, with seating on either side. The place was much bigger inside than it looked from outside — I was surprised.

The tables had plenty of space between them, and there was even a room-style separated area at the back of the restaurant, so it looked like a good spot for larger groups too.

Maybe because it was a Friday, a lot of tables were already having company dinners.

There's a self-serve bar in the middle of the restaurant, and apparently rice refills are unlimited at lunchtime. If my office were nearby I think I'd come here all the time haha.

At the self-serve bar there were basic side dishes, roasted rice tea (sungnyung), and a chilled bean sprout soup — the cold soup was so refreshing and delicious.

And Haetan was also running a fun event! haha You guys should try it too.

At the entrance there was a thoughtful little station with a charging spot, hair ties, toothpicks, and even dental floss.

What comes with the Haetan Combo Set?
Haetan's signature dish is the hot-plate squid, but since I wanted to try a bit of everything, I ordered the Haetan Combo Set this time :)

How the hot-plate squid stir-fry, bossam and fried squid tasted
Ordering the Haetan Combo Set at Haetan Seolleung Branch means the basic side dishes get set out first.

Right after, the spicy squid salad came out — squid tossed with minari (water dropwort) and other fresh vegetables in a sweet-and-tangy sauce that really woke up my appetite!

And the baek-kimchi (non-spicy white kimchi) was mild, exactly the kind you want for wrapping around bossam or squid stir-fry.

And the main dish, the squid stir-fry, had squid so tender, coated in a spicy sauce with a hint of smoky char — exactly the kind of side dish that calls for a drink. Since it came on a hot stone plate, the heat lasted a long time, so I could keep eating it warm the whole way through.

The squid stir-fry was already delicious on its own, but wrapping it with Haetan's side dishes made it even better.

And the bossam had absolutely no gamey smell, super tender and delicious.

This time I tried baek-kimchi with the spicy squid salad on top. This combo is so good!!! Highly recommend.

The last dish was the big fried squid pieces. I worried something that size might be chewy, but that worry was totally unfounded — it was really tender and salty in the best way, exactly the kind of thing that calls for beer! My friends and I ended up having a bottle of beer each that day haha.

And on the way out after finishing our meal, Haetan's ice cream service! You can help yourself to soft-serve, and it was smooth and sweet, the perfect palate cleanser.

Is Haetan Seolleung Branch worth it for a group dinner?
I originally just went because I was craving squid stir-fry, but it turned out to be a much better spot for group dining than I expected! Ordering just the squid stir-fry is great too, but if you're visiting with a group, going for a variety of dishes like the Haetan Combo Set is also a great option. This place works whether you're an office worker looking for lunch near Seolleung Station, having a work dinner, or meeting friends in the area. If you're near Seolleung Station and looking for a place to enjoy spicy squid stir-fry alongside a hearty spread of Korean dishes, definitely check out Haetan Seolleung Branch :)
