While looking for a place in Bongdam where my family could eat meat comfortably, I ended up at Hwadamga.

The first thing I noticed when I walked in was how neatly organized the space felt. Along with regular seating, there were group seats and private rooms, so it seemed well suited to family dinners or gatherings with several people. The parking area was also spacious, so coming by car wasn't a hassle.
What I ate this time was pre-seared Korean pork belly and steamed egg custard. Rather than just eating meat and calling it done, I could pair it with king oyster mushrooms, bracken fern, cabbage, aged kimchi and meljeot, which made for a pretty full spread.
Bongdam's Hwadamga, a solid first impression for family dinners or gatherings
Hwadamga is located at 58 Nangnaegi-gil, Bongdam-eup, Hyohaeng-gu, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. The wide parking space out front was the first thing I liked, since I didn't have to circle around or wait for a spot.
Inside, the overall vibe is on the tidy side. The gaps between tables didn't feel cramped, and having separate group seats and private rooms made it easy to pick a spot depending on the occasion. Whether you're taking your parents out, wanting a relaxed family meal, or coming with a larger group, that kind of layout quietly matters. Hwadamga made a pretty good first impression on that front.

A welcome self-serve bar for anyone who loves banchan
Before the meal started, what caught my eye was the self-serve bar stocked with Korean banchan (side dishes).

On top of the banchan served by default, you could grab as much more as you wanted based on your taste, which was nice to pair with the meat throughout the meal. At a BBQ place, the main dish matters, but if the side dish lineup is too plain, things can get a little dull halfway through. Hwadamga had enough variety of banchan that it was fun to pick and choose, and I didn't get tired of any single flavor. The bar itself was well kept and the area around the food wasn't messy, so it was easy to use.
A self-serve corner for drinks, use as much as you need
On one side there's also a separate self-serve drink station. Rather than flagging down staff whenever I needed a drink, I could just help myself, which was actually more convenient. With the banchan bar and drink area separated, it was easy to grab what I needed as the meal went on. These small things add up, and they kept the flow of the meal from breaking, which made the whole experience more satisfying than I expected.

Pre-seared Korean pork belly, nice not to wait too long
The main dish I ordered was pre-seared Korean pork belly. Hwadamga's Korean pork belly comes out already partially seared, so at the table you just finish it off to your liking.

Compared to grilling raw meat from scratch and waiting a long time, it was pretty convenient to get to the first bite much faster. On the grill plate along with the pork belly were king oyster mushrooms, bracken fern, cabbage and aged kimchi, so it looked quite hearty right from the start. It was also nice how the aged kimchi and bracken fern slowly cooked in the meat's rendered fat, bringing out more of their own flavors. Rather than eating pork belly on its own the whole time, switching it up — a bite of meat, then kimchi, then bracken fern — kept it from getting old.

Pre-seared pork belly: golden on the outside, moist on the inside
Since the meat was pre-seared, I was a little curious whether it would come out overcooked, but being able to finish grilling it to my preferred doneness at the table actually worked out better. The nicely browned exterior paired well with the juiciness inside, and the savory flavor unique to Korean pork came through clearly.

The cut had enough thickness that it didn't just disappear too thin when I bit into it, so the texture was satisfying too. Personally, the combination with aged kimchi worked best for me. The kimchi's deep tanginess cuts through the meat's richness, so my chopsticks naturally kept going back for more.
King oyster mushrooms and bracken fern paired really well with the meat
I also liked the sides that came out with the meat. King oyster mushrooms keep their moisture the longer they cook on the grill, and eating them with the pork belly clearly changed the texture. The bracken fern picked up a bit of the meat's fat, adding a savory note, and the cabbage developed a natural sweetness as it grilled. And of course, the aged kimchi went without saying. Even though I only ordered one Korean pork belly dish, I could switch up the pairings in so many ways that the meal never felt monotonous.
Dipping it in meljeot brought a whole different flavor
Meljeot (fermented anchovy sauce) comes out alongside the pork belly. Dipping a well-grilled piece of meat lightly into meljeot adds a savory saltiness that's different from salt or ssamjang (dipping sauce). Personally, dipping it lightly rather than soaking it too much suited me better, since I could still taste the meat's natural savoriness.
Eating it with aged kimchi felt fresh and light, while eating it with meljeot felt richer and deeper. Having the pairing change even within a single plate made the meal more fun.
Steamed egg custard, a must-have alongside meat
I also ordered steamed egg custard along with the pork belly.

When you're eating meat and something warm and soft comes in between, it totally changes the mood in your mouth. Hwadamga's steamed egg custard kept its fluffy, soft texture and was the kind you could easily scoop up with a spoon. It wasn't heavily seasoned, so it paired well between bites of pork belly, and I especially kept going back to it when I needed a little break from the meat. If I order pork belly again next time, I'll probably order this alongside it again.
A meal made easier by staff checking on the grill plate throughout
When you're eating meat, the grill plate can get messy pretty fast as kimchi or the meat's own seasoning sticks and burns onto it. At Hwadamga, staff checked on the state of the grill plate during the meal and cleaned it themselves, which was more impressive than I expected.

I didn't even have to ask — they noticed the flow of the meal and took care of it, and their manner was gentle without feeling overbearing. When you're grilling meat continuously, this kind of small upkeep quietly matters a lot, and once the grill plate was reset, I could enjoy grilling the next round in a good mood. The service didn't feel overdone, but they were attentive at the moments it actually mattered.
Even the restroom felt like it had interior design put into it
One place I unexpectedly remembered from this restaurant was the restroom.

It wasn't just the main dining area that was made to look good — the restroom was also well maintained, and it felt like even the small decor pieces inside were placed with care.

It went beyond simple cleanliness, with even small interior touches carrying a sense of cohesion. When the space you use after finishing a meal is this well kept, it somehow makes your final impression of the whole restaurant that much better.
A place I'd like to go back to for other menu items besides pork belly
This time I had pre-seared Korean pork belly and steamed egg custard, but looking through the menu, I found myself wanting to try other dishes next time. Beyond the items meant to go with meat, there are also set meals and a range of Korean dishes, so I could easily come back with the same person and choose something different next time.
In particular, the pre-seared Korean pork belly paired with bracken fern, mushrooms and aged kimchi suited my taste well, and thanks to the banchan self-serve bar, I could enjoy a variety of flavors throughout the meal. With ample parking, plus rooms and group seating, it's the kind of place that would come to mind again when looking for a spot for a family gathering. Rather than somewhere you visit once and move on, it felt more like a place I'd want to come back to for other set meals or meat dishes. If you're looking to enjoy meat and Korean food comfortably in one place in Bongdam, Hwadamga is worth checking out.
