In short

Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Dongtan Namgwangjang Branch is a cockle jjamppong specialty Chinese restaurant in the Namgwangjang food alley of Dongtan, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. Over six months the writer visited five times, ordering level 1 cockle jjamppong rice, tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork), and review-event fried dumplings, and found both solo seats and group tables comfortable for eating alone. With adjustable spice levels, it's a solid pick for a spicy hangover cure or a quick lunch.

5 visits in 6 months, and easy to eat solo

I visited at 1pm and every table was full — that alone tells you how popular this place is. I've been five times in six months, and it's been consistently spicy and delicious every time. There are plenty of seats and quick turnover, so it's always busy but I never had to wait.

The interior is very clean, without the greasy feel typical of Chinese restaurants. It's comfortable to sit at a solo seat if you're eating alone, and there are plenty of group tables too, so you can enjoy your meal either way. I noticed a few people having a drink with their meal, too. The AC was blasting, so even eating hot food wasn't a burden!🍃

Freshly fried dumplings for writing a review

Write a review and they'll give you fried dumplings 🥟 — no need to order the dumpling menu item separately. They fry them fresh to order, which takes a little time, so I'd recommend requesting them right after you order.

Hot, crispy, freshly fried dumplings are a real treat. Crunch through the thick dumpling skin and the salty meat and glass noodle filling inside comes together perfectly. Dipping them in the jjamppong broth is amazing. Getting a ₩6,000 menu item just for writing a review... isn't that the ultimate value?!👼

Level 1 cockle jjamppong rice — how spicy is it?

I ordered level 1, which is just a bit spicier than Shin Ramyun. A friend who ordered level 3 said it was even spicier than Buldak. Since a lot of people these days can handle really spicy food, having adjustable levels seems like a great feature.🤔

The smoky broth loaded with plump cockles really gets your appetite going. Take a first sip of the soup and it's not a light spiciness — it's heavy, like a meat-broth base, with the deep savory flavor of chili powder.

The real charm of Bultina's cockle jjamppong is the generous, chewy, plump cockles.⛱️🌊 As you eat, they just keep coming from under the red broth — you start wondering if they're endlessly regenerating. No fishy seafood taste at all, just savory and well blended into the jjamppong.

I ordered the jjamppong rice, which comes with a small amount of noodles too. Being able to enjoy a little noodles along with the rice made it even more delicious.

Sweet-and-salty combo: tangsuyuk

Take a bite of spicy jjamppong, then cool it down with sweet tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) — that sweet-salty combo just keeps you eating endlessly! The tangsuyuk isn't sour, just sweet and crispy. The onions aren't spicy either, so eating them together keeps things from feeling greasy. The cucumber especially gives it a clean, refreshing feel.

Table after finishing the meal

The restroom is inside the restaurant building, so you can go without any hassle!

Dessert drink corner with mocha coffee

Finish it off with a sweet mocha coffee or choco latte for dessert and you've got the perfect meal! If you're near Dongtan's Namgwangjang looking for a rich jjamppong to soothe your stomach or a properly smoky cockle jjamppong, I strongly recommend not hesitating and just going.
