Braised beef shank hot pot and garlic pork jowl at Hwieol Migeum
In short
Hwieol Migeum Branch is a Korean-style bar near Migeum Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, serving Korean, Chinese, Japanese and Western dishes reworked as Korean drinking food. On a rainy evening the writer ordered the signature aronsatae suyuk jeongol (braised beef shank hot pot, ₩30,000) and garlic pork jowl suyuk (₩24,000) for dinner and drinks. Warm lighting, orange seating and a terrace make it a good pick for a date or a quiet get-together.

What kind of place is Hwieol?
It's a drinking-food spot that takes Korean, Chinese, Japanese and Western dishes and reworks them all as Korean-style bar snacks. The name 'Hwieol' combines the Korean word 'hwi,' meaning a container for measuring grain, with 'eol,' a native Korean word used similarly to the Chinese-character word for 'spirit' — together meaning something like 'putting our spirit into the food we make.' I thought the name was unique and pretty, and turns out the meaning is just as special haha ^^

Soft, stylish lighting, a private and sleek interior, and emotional music playing in the background~ A hot new spot near Migeum Station that's great for a date or a get-together in a nice atmosphere! It's an old neighborhood of mine so it feels familiar and comforting — at this Korean drinking-food bar, Hwieol, near Migeum Station, I decided to have dinner and a light drink.

Location, hours, parking
- A well-loved bar with great atmosphere, Hwieol Migeum Branch / 25-6 Migeum-illo 74beon-gil, 1st floor, unit 1
- 📍 360m from Migeum Station Exit 3
- ⏰ Mon–Sat 16:00 – 00:50 the next day, last order 23:50, closed Sundays
- 🚗 Only 1–2 cars fit right in front of the store, so if you mention it when reserving they'll try to set aside parking space, or you can use the 'Geumgok-dong public parking lot' about 5 minutes away.

Orange seats, the big window, and the interior mood
It reminded me of Hermès haha... The pretty orange chairs and tables, plus the soft lighting, created an atmosphere that made it easy to focus on conversation for a special meetup or gathering.

The seat by the large window overlooking the walking path is the only 5-person table, so it was being kept as a reservation-only spot. It was raining heavily that day, and the trees outside looked an even deeper green, soaked with rain. There are no partitions here, but I liked how the tables were spaced slightly apart from each other instead.

I'm not sure if the long seating on one side was built that way on purpose, but there was already a team in the middle of a company dinner there, while most of the other tables seated just two people, so despite being a bar it felt fairly quiet. It seems like a comfortable place for a date or a blind date, and since there are small tables too, you could probably come here for a solo drink without feeling self-conscious (?).

Aronsatae suyuk jeongol (braised beef shank hot pot), ₩30,000
I ordered the signature menu item, the very first one listed on the menu: aronsatae suyuk jeongol (₩30,000). Beef shank, pressure-cooked until tender, is simmered again with a clean, savory beef broth, assorted vegetables, mushrooms and thin wheat noodles. The shank was incredibly soft and savory.

Garlic pork jowl suyuk, ₩24,000, and what I wished were better
Garlic gabrisal suyuk (garlic pork jowl, boiled and sliced), ₩24,000. Pork jowl, simmered until deeply flavored, tender and chewy, is eaten with grilled vegetables, a chive-and-bean-sprout salad, and a sweet house-made garlic sauce. I picked dishes based on how good they looked in photos, and only realized afterward that both were suyuk (boiled meat) dishes — oops! But luckily the gabrisal suyuk had a nice chewy grilled flavor, so it worked out. The bean sprout salad seemed to be seasoned lightly on purpose, to let the suyuk shine, but since I tend to like bolder flavors, I wished it had been a bit spicier and saltier instead of so mild. Still, the grilled onion went really well with the pork jowl, so it was fine overall ~~^^

The liquor display and the standing mirror
They have the many kinds of liquor they sell on display. Hermès-style lighting here too haha

After a delicious meal, on the way out I noticed a gorgeous full-length mirror I'd walked right past on the way in. It looked so pretty that I tried taking a shot of myself, but I came out looking kind of squat and the composition just wouldn't come together nicely haha.

The terrace on a rainy day
A terrace on a rainy day is really full of charm.

They clearly put just as much care into the entrance and terrace as they did into the interior, so the overall atmosphere is pretty great. It seems to be used mainly as waiting seats right now, but if proper tables were set up here, I think it would become my husband's number one pick — he really loves drinking in a mood like this ^^
