Suwon chicken after Hwaseong Haenggung night opening: Jangjak Tongdak

In short

Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is an oak-fired old-style whole chicken restaurant on Haenggung-ro in Suwon, a 3-minute walk from Hwaseong Haenggung palace. After touring the palace's night opening, the writer arrived late and ordered the herbal oak-roasted chicken with tteok (rice cake, 3,000 won) and fries (4,000 won) plus a draft beer, finding the skin crisp, the meat juicy and the herbal aroma gentle. It is mild enough for children, and since evenings can get busy, booking ahead is the safer plan.

Path from Hwaseong Haenggung public parking lot toward the restaurant

If you come out of the public parking lot near Haenggung and walk straight in the direction shown in the photo above (to the right)...

...you'll find it right here. You can easily walk over from Hwaseong Haenggung and the Haenggung-dong café street!!

True to being an oak-fired chicken place, there's a stack of oak firewood piled up outside too 😄 Chickens roasting away deliciously over the oak fire ❤️

Seating on two floors: group dinners on the 2nd floor

Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak has plenty of seating — not just the 1st floor but a 2nd floor too! The 2nd floor seemed great for group dinners and gatherings. There was actually a group dining there when I visited! They said if you contact the restaurant for group inquiries, they respond quickly 😄

The menu and add-ons at Haenggung Jangjak: what the writer ordered

Here's the menu. Beyond what's listed, there are add-on options too: tteok (rice cake) ₩3,000 / fries ₩4,000 / mozzarella cheese ₩4,000 / sausage ₩4,000. I ordered 1 herbal oak-roasted chicken, 1 tteok, 1 fries, 1 draft beer, 1 soft drink 😄

Basic table setting with salt, mustard, kimchi, and carrot-radish salad

They set the table with salt, mustard, yangnyeom chicken sauce, kimchi, and carrot-radish salad 💕

How does the herbal oak-roasted chicken taste? 12 hours aged, 2 hours over oak

The herbal chicken sizzling away 💕 They gave a generous amount of fries and chewy tteok that stretches like cheese! Before roasting, Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak marinates the chicken in various herbal ingredients for about 12 hours. Then it's slowly rotated and roasted over an oak firewood oven for about 2 hours. Maybe that's why the skin is crispy, the meat juicy, and there's a subtle herbal aroma!

Fries and tteok served alongside the chicken
Chewy tteok stretching as it's pulled apart
Close-up of the crispy roasted chicken skin

It's not spicy or heavy, so even babies could eat it! Great to bring kids along 😄 I love the wings on roasted chicken because the skin gets so chewy. Totally chewy, savory, and clean-tasting! haha The drumsticks are delicious of course~ and the chicken breast was so juicy too 👍💕

Dip it in sauce for a bite~ I'm a fried-chicken purist so I like dipping mine in salt 😆

Rice found inside the whole roasted chicken

Cold draft beer paired with the chicken

Rice, kimchi, radish salad and an ice-cold draft beer

There's plenty of rice inside too! Eating it with kimchi is pure honey~~💕 It felt like a real energy-boosting meal haha. The radish salad is sweet and tangy and so good!!! It cleanses your palate so I just kept scooping it up..🤣

Can't skip the draft beer, right?😆❤️ The draft beer was suuuuper cold~~~~~~🧊❄️ Eating it with beer, I kept eating even when I was full ㅎ Had a really delicious meal~!

Visiting late after the Hwaseong Haenggung night opening: book ahead

I visited quite late after touring Hwaseong Haenggung's night opening, but if you're planning to come in the evening, there might be a wait, so I'd recommend making a reservation!! (You can also book through Catch Table ✨)

There's a lot to see near the restaurant and the area is really lively!!! I'd recommend it as a date spot in Haenggung-dong, or an outing spot with kids 😄
