Suwon late-night chicken and rice tteokbokki date: Haenggung Jangjak
In short
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is an oak-fired whole chicken restaurant on Haenggung-ro, right next to Hwaseong Haenggung Palace in Suwon. Stopping by on a night-walk date, we ordered the hanbang jangjak-gui tongdak (herbal oak-fired whole chicken) for 23,000 won with rice tteokbokki (chewy rice cakes in sweet-spicy sauce), and the crisp-skinned, juicy chicken, the nurungji (crispy scorched rice) under it and the sweet-and-savoury tteokbokki worked well together. Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak stays open late and sits a 3-minute walk from the Hwaseong Haenggung public street parking lot, making it an easy late-night or date stop.

Today I'm writing up a review of a real gem near Hwaseong Haenggung Palace in Suwon that I visited a while back on a night-walk date: Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak (행궁장작 한방통닭).
I usually love fried chicken too, but sometimes you just crave a hanbang tongdak (herbal medicinal chicken) roasted over an open wood fire, with all the excess grease gone and a light, easy-on-the-stomach feel, you know? The location was fantastic and the vibe was perfect too, so I wanted to share it with you all.

Where is Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak, and where do you park? (open late)
- Address: 28 Haenggung-ro, 1F, Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak
- Location: Right next to Hwaseong Haenggung Palace in Suwon (walking distance to the Haenggung-dong café street and craft-shop street)
- Parking: Hwaseong Haenggung street public parking lot (about a 3-minute walk) or nearby public/private lots
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak sits right next to Hwaseong Haenggung Palace in Suwon, so it was really easy to find. The location is perfect for stopping by after a walk or a date.
If you're driving, you can park comfortably at the Hwaseong Haenggung street public parking lot. It's only about a 3-minute walk away, so you don't have to worry about parking at all, which was a huge plus. Plus, since it's open late into the night, it felt totally low-pressure to visit for a late dinner or a night-time snack — I really liked that about it.
Stacks of oak firewood out front at Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak

Before even walking through the entrance, something about the building's exterior caught my eye — piles and piles of firewood logs!
Apparently, the chicken goes through a 12-hour herbal brine before being slow-roasted for about 2 hours, rotating over an oak-wood fire pit. Seeing the actual oak logs stacked at the entrance naturally built up my anticipation — like, how good must a chicken be that's roasted with this much care over real firewood?

Ordering the signature herbal oak-fired whole chicken (23,000 won) and tteokbokki
Once inside, I checked the menu and, as expected, the signature dish was the hanbang jangjak-guiitongdak (₩23,000). I chose it without hesitation, and since I was a little worried it might not be enough, and because chicken and tteokbokki is a combo that never fails, I ordered tteokbokki too.
How was the herbal oak-fired chicken and the crispy nurungji?

After the wait, the hanbang jangjak-guiitongdak arrived, and it was visually overwhelming from the start.
One bite in, the chicken meat was so soft, moist, and tender it practically melted in my mouth. The outside was crispy while the inside held onto all its juices, and I couldn't help but be impressed.

The base seasoning was perfectly balanced, so it was light and deeply flavorful even without dipping much into the sauce. And the crispy nurungji (scorched rice) at the bottom was another delicacy — the subtle herbal aroma and nutty flavor blended together so well that I enjoyed it all the way to the last bite.

Chewy rice tteokbokki: the best snack with a drink

The tteokbokki that came out after the chicken was also super satisfying!
Personally I prefer chewy rice tteok over wheat tteok, so I was pleasantly surprised that they thoughtfully made it with rice tteok.

The sauce was sweet with a slight kick of spice, well-balanced enough to pair nicely with the chicken and just right as a drinking snack — it kept going down easily. The light hanbang tongdak paired with the sweet-and-spicy tteokbokki made a truly perfect sweet-and-salty combo.
