The traditional seasoned oak-fired chicken costs 25,000 won, and a mozzarella cheese topping adds 4,000 won; the takeout box came with chicken that stayed moist even in the breast, plus glutinous rice packed with chestnuts and jujubes. Today I'm bringing you a review of the traditional seasoned flavor at Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak, an oak-fired whole chicken restaurant in Haenggung-dong. This is a great spot to visit when fried chicken feels a bit too heavy and you're craving roasted chicken with chewy, moist glutinous rice inside ❣️

Where is Haenggung Jangjak Tongdak in Haenggung-dong, and where do you park?
Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is on Haenggung-ro in Paldal-gu, Suwon, and is open daily from 17:00 to 24:00. There's no dedicated parking space, so I parked at the public lot right next to Hwaseong Haenggung and walked over!
On weekends or weekday evenings that public parking lot at Hwaseong Haenggung fills up fast, so just a heads up on parking… please keep that in mind ahead of time 🚗

It's located in the alley right next to Hwaseong Haenggung, so it's a 5-minute walk! A great spot to eat chicken and then take a loop around Hwaseong Haenggung.

Since it's an oak-fired chicken place, there's a big pile of firewood out front! The smell of chicken roasting with that charcoal aroma was wafting out from the entrance already ✨

There aren't that many tables, so if you come during evening peak hours there might be a bit of a wait! The chicken was roasting away deliciously in the clean open kitchen 👇

Menu and toppings at Haenggung Jangjak Tongdak: what can you choose?
- Herbal oak-fired chicken (corn cheese / seasoned / king galbi / barbecue / fire, etc.)
- Draft beer, cola, Sprite, soju, and more
You can order via the QR code at the table, and there's also a menu board so you can see everything at a glance! Toppings available for the whole chicken include french fries, mozzarella cheese, rice cake, and sausage — all of which are bound to taste great with the chicken 👍

Traditional seasoned oak-fired chicken 25,000 won plus mozzarella cheese 4,000 won
Traditional seasoned oak-fired chicken (₩25,000), mozzarella cheese topping (₩4,000). I'm a seasoned-sauce person, so I ordered the seasoned oak-fired chicken with mozzarella cheese topping to take out!
If you eat it in the restaurant, they serve the chicken sizzling on a hot stone plate, so eating it in-house really seems like the better option ㅠㅠ I had plans that day so I was sad to have to take it to go 🥲

What comes in the takeout box?
Once I got home and unpacked it, they'd included the delicious-looking oak-fired chicken along with radish salad, chicken salt, honey mustard, and seasoning sauce! The packaging was neat and tidy, so none of the sauce leaked on the way home.

Here it is, here it is 👍 Underneath the glossy roasted chicken, the sauce and rice are packed in below! At first glance I thought, hm, is the sauce a bit light? But it turned out there was plenty packed underneath ㅋㅋㅋ

How does the oak-fired chicken taste — is the breast still moist?
Roasted chicken often ends up dry if it's not done right since it loses all its moisture, but the chicken at Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak had really tender breast meat too! It felt like eating sous-vide chicken ✨

If the breast is this tender, need I even mention the drumstick… The drumsticks were quite large too, and the meat was really tender and savory 🍗

Mozzarella cheese with the traditional seasoning sauce
On top of that, add the chewy mozzarella cheese and it's the icing on the cake! The sauce wasn't as strongly seasoned as I expected — it had a slightly ketchup-like, sweet-and-tangy flavor that went really well with the tender chicken!
That said, it was a little lacking in spiciness for me, so next time I think I might order the fire chicken flavor instead haha

The best part: chestnut and jujube glutinous rice inside the chicken
And now, the star of oak-fired chicken! The glutinous rice ㅠㅠ There are people who eat roasted chicken just because they miss this rice 👍 It's moist and chewy, and with chestnuts, jujubes, and more mixed in, it had a lovely herbal fragrance ❣️ With the added carbs, it made for a really filling meal.

The chestnuts inside were fairly big too, and eating one every so often — savory and fluffy — was a nice little treat haha

That wraps up my review of Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak. If you're craving moist, tender roasted whole chicken, this is a place you won't regret visiting 👍
