Anyang grilled fish restaurant for the boyang set with eel
In short
Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch is an oven-grilled fish restaurant on Gwanak-daero in Bisan-dong, Anyang, Gyeonggi. Visiting with a young child, the writer ordered the boyang (nourishing) set for two, which came loaded with domestic sea eel, oily flounder and Norwegian mackerel grilled fish plus braised mackerel with radish, topped off with tteokbokki, bean sprouts and sungnyung (scorched rice tea) from the self-serve bar. A hearty, satisfying stop for anyone with a fish-loving kid in Bisan-dong.

My kid loves fish, so I grill it at home sometimes, but between worrying about the smell and dealing with the cleanup afterward, eating out just feels a lot cleaner and easier. This time I went to Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch, a well-known oven-grilled fish spot near our home in Bisan-dong, Anyang!

An easy place to visit with kids, with basement parking too
The restaurant is clean overall and the seating is fairly spacious, so even with a kid in tow we could eat comfortably. It's a clean, pleasant spot that works well for a family meal — this Bisan-dong grilled fish restaurant, Hwaddeugeuro, also has basement parking, which I really liked.

Apparently Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch grills the fish in a clay oven over 500℃, so the outside comes out crispy while the inside stays moist! Watching them throw it straight into the oven right after ordering got me even more excited.

What's at the self-serve bar?
Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch also has a self-serve bar, so I could go grab more of anything I was running low on. There was already plenty of variety in the standard side dishes, and with the self-serve bar on top of that, it's easy to eat a really hearty meal.

There's bracken, radish salad, bean sprouts, sesame oil and perilla oil for making bibimbap, plus lettuce, gochujang, and tofu ssamjang for wrapping!

Beyond the basic side dishes, the self-serve bar also has tteokbokki, sungnyung (scorched rice tea), and japchae. Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch is a Bisan-dong grilled fish restaurant where the fish is great, but I loved the self-serve bar being so generous too.
Menu and prices at Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch

True to its name as a grilled fish specialty restaurant, Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch has more than just mackerel — Atka mackerel, Spanish mackerel, hairtail, and various other grilled fish dishes, plus sets that combine several menu items, which seemed like a great option for a family meal out!
Six standard banchan

You can't have a grilled fish place without good banchan (side dishes), right? We got six standard ones — japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), deodeok muchim, mushroom muchim, spicy pepper muchim, chonggak kimchi, and macaroni salad. They all paired well with the grilled fish, so it was nice to have a bit of everything at Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch.

Plus the bean sprouts and tteokbokki I grabbed extra from the self-serve bar! There are plenty of side dishes kids can eat, and tteokbokki for the adults on top of that — not bad at all, right? No wonder customers keep streaming in at mealtimes.

You can choose white rice or brown rice, and if you need more, there's extra rice at the self-serve bar too! And you need soup to wash it all down, right?? The napa cabbage doenjang soup was mild yet refreshing — really nice.

The boyang set for two — grilled fish and braised fish together
The boyang set for two we had this time comes with several kinds of grilled and braised fish together, so it's great to pick on a day when you want a heartier meal than a regular grilled fish set! The braised mackerel came with big chunks of radish and bracken, and the spicy, tangy sauce was well soaked into everything — perfect with rice.

The softly cooked radish and bracken were honestly as good as the mackerel itself. Putting the sauce-soaked radish on top of rice was moist and packed with umami — total rice thief. I also picked the mackerel flesh out of the braise, topped it with sauce and ate it with rice, and it wasn't salty or too strong — the seasoning was well balanced.

How was the oven-grilled fish?
The real strength of Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch is definitely the oven grilling! Eating it in person, the outside of the fish was golden brown while the inside was moist, making it great with rice~ Grilled fish can easily end up dry or a bit fishy, but this was clean-tasting and savory overall.

With domestic sea eel, oily flounder, and Norwegian mackerel all in one, the variety of fish in the boyang set for two was great! My fish-loving little one polished off a whole bowl of rice, which made me proud. If you're looking for a hearty Korean or grilled fish restaurant in Bisan-dong, Anyang, I'd recommend giving Hwaddeugeuro Gan Godeungeo Bisan Branch a try :)
