Gwacheon café for warm Helsinki Latte and hotteok babka: Minimale
In short
Minimale Coffee Roaster Gwacheon Knowledge Information Town Branch is a specialty coffee café in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi. After waiting more than 15 minutes at a busy time, I tried a warm Helsinki Latte with nutty Dunkel beans, hotteok babka, and orange pound cake. Verdict: the warm latte and dessert pairing is worth returning for, even with the wait.

It’s a café I really love, but somehow I had only visited around evening here, tried whatever cookies were left, and had dessert at other branches instead. The flavors are the same at every branch, but I like the Gwacheon Knowledge Information Town Branch even more because it is spacious and comfortable.

Today, I came excitedly at that awkward time between lunch and dinner, thinking there would still be desserts left. But it was so packed that I wondered whether everyone living in the Knowledge Information Town had gathered there. Still, this is a place I just can’t give up on.

Let me introduce Minimale Coffee Roaster Gwacheon Knowledge Information Town Branch (미니말레 커피뢰스터 과천지식정보타운점).

I finally got a seat after waiting more than 15 minutes, and I don’t think today was really a situation where I could take proper photos. Please understand.
Uncompromising bean quality and making specialty coffee accessible
To be honest, specialty coffee does not usually suit my palate, so I do not drink it often. But Minimale is the kind of place that aims to make specialty coffee something even people like me can enjoy in everyday life.

Specialty coffee bean blends
Cupping is the formal coffee testing and evaluation method in which coffee professionals such as roasters, baristas, and Q graders objectively assess and identify a bean’s aroma and quality. Aroma, flavor, aftertaste, acidity, body, and balance are scored together. A coffee must score 80 points or above in cupping to be recognized as specialty coffee. This place insists on using only high-quality specialty beans with cupping scores of 80 or higher. Its in-house blend lineup is very solid: Dunkel, with a nutty, deep flavor; Balance, where tropical-fruit acidity and balance come together; and decaf, which removes 99.9% of caffeine while preserving the beans’ natural sweetness.
Warm Helsinki Latte and Americano
Enjoying Helsinki Latte and Americano warm
The Helsinki Latte, a signature drink inspired by the best latte the owner encountered while traveling in Helsinki, Finland, is a must-try. It leaves out bitterness and maximizes rich milk flavor and smoothness.

It goes beyond simply mixing in milk: they have carefully studied the espresso-to-milk ratio and the harmony of body to create such a distinctive flavor that people say this is the café where lattes taste their best.

It is so popular that some people buy several bottled ones to take home.
Everyone drinks it iced, and I had only ever had it iced too. But today I chose the nutty Dunkel beans and asked for it warm. The result was amazing. Unlike the clean, full-bodied appeal of the cold latte, the warm temperature made the nuttiness of the milk and the deep flavor of the beans feel so much smoother.

There is no bitterness, only sweetness and nuttiness lingering behind, so with every sip I could not help saying, “Wow! This is good.”

Even last winter, I thought it was only available iced, so I kept drinking it cold while saying, “It’s delicious even cold!” From now on, I should have it warm. I also had an Americano alongside it, and it was as consistently delicious as ever.
Hotteok babka and orange pound cake
Hotteok babka & orange pound cake
You cannot leave out the bakery items, which pair perfectly with the coffee. I had tried babka once at another branch, but although I have visited the Gwacheon Knowledge Information Town Branch so often, I always came after 5 p.m. and could only get cookies. Today was my first time finally meeting it here.

Babka started appearing a few months ago. Babka is an Eastern European-style bread made by generously filling moist, soft yeasted dough with chocolate, cinnamon, jam, nuts, and more, then twisting and baking it in layers. Its name comes from a Slavic word meaning “grandmother,” because the baked bread was said to resemble a grandmother’s wrinkled skirt or shawl. There are au chocolat, hotteok, butter, and cinnamon flavors, among others. I chose the hotteok babka because something rich sounded good. It was generously filled with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutty nuts, and it was really tasty. It tastes exactly like an upscale hotteok (Korean sweet pancake), and I do not think there is anyone who would dislike this.

And honestly, the color of the new orange pound cake immediately caught my eye.

A fresh orange scent gently spread through it, and the moist pound cake was not overly sweet but full of orange flavor. It paired well with coffee and felt refreshing. It made me think of my child, so I packed up one more to take home.

No matter how crowded it gets or how fierce the competition for desserts is, I do not think I could give up this delicious coffee and dessert. Maybe everyone feels the same way, which is why, even amid the bustle, they enjoy it with their own sense of ease. If you are looking for proper specialty coffee and delicious desserts in Gwacheon, I definitely recommend visiting Minimale Coffee Roaster Gwacheon Knowledge Information Town Branch.
