I visited Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch again — this time for autumn's seasonal gizzard shad, after coming for the plump raw shrimp back in summer! That visit left a strong memory of how good the raw shrimp was, and this time I went all out with gizzard shad sashimi plus the raw shrimp + grilled shrimp set. Here's my review of Sintongyeong, a well-known raw fish restaurant in Daeyeon-dong, Busan!

Sintongyeong Gyeongseongdae Branch, a well-known raw fish restaurant in Daeyeon-dong, Busan, is located at 21 Suyeong-ro 334beon-gil, Nam-gu, Busan. You'll find it by turning right into the Suhyup alley from Exit 1 of Gyeongseongdae·Pukyongdaehak Station. Being on a university street, it's also easy to get to — great for a meal if you have plans around Gyeongseong University.

There's a live fish tank out front, kept clean and well managed, which gave me even more confidence in the seafood's freshness!

The interior is tidy and the overall vibe is comfortable for a relaxed meal. The terrace seats in the main building have a distinctive atmosphere that would be great for a date.

There's also an annex, which seemed like a good option for group gatherings or company dinners.

Menu and what we ordered

Sintongyeong menu board listing assorted sashimi and seasonal seafood

From assorted sashimi to a variety of seasonal seafood and fish species, the menu was well stocked. The meal options are varied too, making this a Daeyeon-dong raw fish restaurant that's great for a hearty spread.

What we ordered

  • Gizzard shad (seasonal menu, summer–autumn) — Small ₩40,000
  • Shrimp sashimi (seasonal menu, summer–autumn) — half raw, half grilled ₩45,000
A spread of basic side dishes served to start
An assortment of raw fish restaurant side dish plates

At a raw fish restaurant, the side dishes matter almost as much as the main! Sintongyeong, this well-known raw fish restaurant in Daeyeon-dong, Busan, does a good job with the basic side dishes too — clean and varied.

A table filling up further with mulhoe added

While we were eating, out came mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) and sweet potato chips too, until the table was practically overflowing.

Autumn gizzard shad sashimi, half seokkosi and half boneless

The dish I was most looking forward to on this visit — gizzard shad sashimi!

Gizzard shad sashimi served half seokkosi and half boneless

At Sintongyeong, ordering gizzard shad sashimi gets you half seokkosi (bone-in, thin-sliced) and half deboned sashimi, so you can enjoy two different textures.

Bone-in gizzard shad seokkosi with a crunchy texture

The seokkosi has an appealing crunch from chewing through the small bones,

while the boneless gizzard shad let me fully enjoy the soft, rich texture of the flesh.

Autumn gizzard shad sashimi eaten wrapped in lettuce

The gizzard shad's signature nutty flavor really came through — this confirmed that autumn is truly the season for gizzard shad!

Full table spread of the half-and-half gizzard shad sashimi

Personally I prefer the boneless gizzard shad sashimi over the bone-in seokkosi, so I loved that it came served half and half.

Raw shrimp sashimi and grilled shrimp set

We also ordered the raw shrimp and grilled shrimp set. Raw shrimp sashimi alone is ₩40,000, and the raw + grilled shrimp set is ₩45,000, so you can order to suit your taste!

The raw shrimp was fresh with a nice plump, springy texture.

A piece of raw shrimp dipped in soy sauce

Delicious dipped in soy sauce or in chojang (vinegared chili paste) — the shrimp had a subtle natural sweetness that was really appealing.

Grilled shrimp with shrimp heads and whole shrimp

The grilled shrimp came out with the shrimp heads and whole shrimp from the raw portion, fried-grilled to a crisp.

Close-up of crisply grilled shrimp

The grilled shrimp had a savory, deeply shrimpy flavor. Eating it alongside the raw shrimp doubled the satisfaction! For our meal course we also ordered the bone spicy stew and flying fish roe rice.

Bone spicy stew ordered as a meal item

The bone spicy stew is ₩5,000, but it comes complimentary if you order a sashimi dish! Since we didn't order sashimi this time, we ordered it separately!

Spicy bone stew with sujebi hand-torn dough bits

A spicy stew loaded with sancho (Sichuan pepper) — how could that not be delicious~

Packed with fish and tofu, plus chewy hand-torn dough bits (sujebi), it was hugely satisfying. I love sujebi.

Flying fish roe rice with a crust formed in the stone pot

Flying fish roe rice (₩5,000) — personally one of the tastiest roe rice dishes I've had. The stone pot forms a proper crust, so the popping flying fish roe combined with the crunchy crust texture was so good (ෆ˙ᵕ˙ෆ)

As a simple meal item it's well seasoned, and I'd order it again on my next visit!
