Seomyeon galbitang restaurant for a traveling couple: Gang Galbitang

Today I'm introducing a restaurant from my recent Busan trip that left a real impression! I got to go through a good opportunity this time, but honestly it's the kind of place I'm already sure I'll revisit on my next Busan Seomyeon trip..! This is Gang Galbitang Seomyeon (강갈비탕 서면점), a total favorite among the Seomyeon locals.

How to walk there from Exit 11 of Seomyeon Station

Gang Galbitang Seomyeon is located across from the old Busanjin District Office if you walk straight out of Exit 11 of Seomyeon Station. It's right next to Hotel T.D!

Still busy at 1pm on a weekday: the storefront

Here's the exterior of Gang Galbitang Seomyeon! We visited around 1pm on a weekday, after the lunch rush, but customers kept walking in even while we were taking photos of the outside..! We got a little anxious mid-photo and hurried inside haha.

Even after we finished eating, past 2pm, there was an older lady sitting out front waiting for a table. As you'll see below, Gang Galbitang Seomyeon is actually a well-known local favorite in Seomyeon! Busan locals just kept streaming in the whole time we were there haha.

Oh, and if you spend over ₩20,000 at Gang Galbitang, they cover 30 minutes of Blue parking lot fees, so anyone who needs parking should definitely take advantage!!

Bar seats for solo diners and the dining room

Here's the interior of Gang Galbitang Seomyeon. We blurred the seated guests' faces, but you can still get a sense of it, right..? A real mix of ages — older grandmothers and grandfathers, young couples like us, married couples, and even foreign tourists — every generation and nationality packed in..! We almost had to wait ourselves, but by sheer luck some customers left just as we arrived, so we grabbed a seat that opened up right in front of us.

There were a lot of single-seat tables inside too. As you can see, from beside the kitchen to the left side of the restaurant, it's set up like a bar for solo diners, and there were plenty of people eating alone when we visited. Since Gang Galbitang opens at 9:20am, breakfast is possible, and apparently a lot of neighborhood elders come in for breakfast and end up having a daytime drink too haha. If you want to eat at a relaxed pace, coming a bit before lunchtime or slightly after it might be a good idea! But since so many people are just there for a quick meal, turnover is faster than you'd expect, so a table opens up pretty soon even if you have to wait a bit.

Gang Galbitang Seomyeon takes orders through a kiosk! Probably because so many older locals from the neighborhood come in, staff thoughtfully take verbal orders for customers who struggle with the kiosk haha. There are also a lot of foreign customers, so the kiosk is set up to accept cash too!

On the wall there's a sign saying they simmer a fresh pot every morning, and info about buying Gang Galbitang mealkits to take home! The video shows the mealkit cooking process, and seeing how clean and careful it is really built my trust in the food. A lot of people were actually buying them — while we were there, one customer bought something like 16 galbitang mealkits at once haha. The mealkits are clearly already pretty popular too..!

Here's the Gang Galbitang menu. Basically, both galbitang and galbi gukbap (rice soup) come in mild and spicy options. A lot of people also order galbi guksu with added jungmyeon noodles. Since it comes with noodles as well as a mini bowl of rice, big eaters seem to find it good value. Some people were even drinking soju in the daytime with a side of arongsatae suyuk (boiled beef shank). Order whatever suits your taste haha. If you go spicy, you can adjust the heat up to level 3, so keep that in mind!

The self-serve side dish bar and a table set in 15 minutes

The side dishes at Gang Galbitang Seomyeon can be refilled endlessly from this self-serve bar. As I always say, I'm a total side-dish lover, so I absolutely adore this self-serve bar haha.

Our food came out in under 15 minutes! We ordered gang galbitang for ₩14,000, spicy gang galbitang for ₩15,000, and added Jeju jungmyeon noodles for ₩2,500.

Gang galbitang, 14,000 won: three chunks of rib meat

First up, the gang galbitang — the sight of it arriving still bubbling and boiling made me happy right away.. There were also medicinal ingredients like jujube and ginseng packed neatly inside.

The quality of the meat needs no explanation haha. I took a bite of the meat in the soup, and it just shredded apart along the grain, incredibly tender..! Of course a restaurant approved by the neighborhood elders can't not be good haha. With three huge chunks of meat like this for ₩14,000, maybe it's because I live in Seoul, but it felt like a very reasonable price.

When I eat galbitang, I usually pick the rib meat off the bone first, put it over rice, then mix rice into the broth. They give you tongs and scissors, but the meat came off so cleanly I barely needed either..! Sometimes galbitang has meat stubbornly stuck to the bone that's a real pain to eat, but at Gang Galbitang Seomyeon it just slid right off — there was a small thrill in that haha.

The lemon soy sauce that comes with it is the real kicker — dipping the meat in it completed the dish. The broth and meat aren't seasoned too strongly, so soy-based sauces and pickled side dishes paired perfectly with the galbitang compared to other sides!

At the end, mixing rice in and eating it with the meat is just the rule, right haha. Meat, rice, and glass noodles together is an unbeatable combo, so we finished every last bit!

Spicy gang galbitang, 15,000 won: hangover broth with radish and bean sprouts

My boyfriend's spicy gang galbitang was also really delicious! Just like the mild version, it arrived boiling hot. The spicy gang galbitang has added radish and bean sprouts, so it felt much closer to a hangover soup than a regular galbitang!

The meat in the spicy gang galbitang was incredible too! Soft and tender, you could tell it had been simmered well. The meat also came off the bone just as cleanly. The broth tasted as restorative as it smelled — even though I hadn't drunk the night before, it still felt like a proper hangover cure haha. The kind of broth that makes you go 'ahh' automatically haha. Radish, bean sprouts, and rich meat broth — really, what more do you need.

Jeju jungmyeon noodles for 2,500 won: a broth that never turns starchy

Everyone seemed to be adding jungmyeon noodle servings to their galbitang and eating it like galbi guksu, so we did the same. Maybe because it's jungmyeon (medium-thick noodles) rather than somyeon (thin noodles), it didn't turn mushy and had a nice chewy bite. I'm usually not a fan of how adding noodles makes broth go starchy and thick, but at Gang Galbitang Seomyeon they seem to boil the noodles separately before adding them, so the broth stayed clean with no starchiness at all — very satisfying!

One of the three Busan meals this couple still craves in Seoul

We went to so many restaurants during our 3-night, 4-day trip in Busan, paying out of pocket for most of them! But after coming back to Seoul, Gang Galbitang Seomyeon ended up in the top three restaurants both my boyfriend and I keep craving. We seriously decided we're going back next time haha. That's Gang Galbitang Seomyeon — such a delicious meal.
