This time I went looking for a real Gwangmyeong restaurant that fits the bill, and found it at Todam Hwadok Saengseongui, by the Anyangcheon stream in Cheolsan.

It's genuinely convenient to reach by public transit — getting off at the Cheolsan Woosung Apartment bus stop, I could see the 3rd-floor storefront right across the main road, so I found it without wandering around.

There's also dedicated parking on the 1st floor with an attendant on duty, so if you're driving, you don't need to worry about finding a spot.

The 3rd-floor hall at Todam Hwadok has plenty of standard tables, plus separate partitioned room-style spaces. The neat yet open atmosphere the moment you walk in was striking.

Not only is there plenty of standard table seating in the hall, but there are also well-appointed private, partitioned spaces for a more intimate meal. That makes it well suited for family dinners or various group gatherings.

Baby chairs are available for families with young children, and the restrooms are clean and located inside the restaurant, so you don't need to step outside mid-meal. The overall clean, comfortable atmosphere typical of a good Korean restaurant made the whole meal feel relaxed and unhurried.

What's on the self-serve bar: side dishes, pumpkin porridge, clay-oven sweet potato and grapes

The basic banchan (side dishes) at Todam Hwadok Saengseongui are mild and clean, not salty or intense, in true hanjeongsik (full-course Korean set meal) style, and you can freely help yourself to more from the self-serve bar. The moment the side dish spread appeared before the main dishes arrived, it felt like being treated to a proper hanjeongsik meal. Every item was clean and neatly prepared, and above all, the seasoning throughout was mild and light rather than salty, letting the natural flavor of the ingredients shine.

The basic banchan were so good my chopsticks kept reaching for them, and being able to freely grab more from the self-serve bar without any hesitation made it even more satisfying. One of the highlights of this place is the generous, well-stocked dessert corner at the self-serve bar.

There's a good selection of desserts, including sweet, smooth pumpkin porridge great before or after the meal, sweet potatoes roasted directly in the clay oven with sweetness that fills your mouth, and refreshing grapes. The clay-oven sweet potato and sweet pumpkin porridge were so good I wanted to go back for seconds and thirds, but I was so full from the generous set menu portions that I couldn't manage more — a bit of a shame, honestly.

The main dish my friend and I ordered at Todam Hwadok Saengseongui was the charcoal-grilled pork set menu for two. The restaurant is famous for its grilled fish, but I'd heard the charcoal-grilled pork was just as impressive as any specialty spot, so I picked it with high expectations.

The moment the food arrived, the smoky charcoal aroma hit me irresistibly — the pork, sizzling on a hot plate, looked mouthwatering from the first glance.

Underneath the meat is a generous layer of thinly sliced onions, which keeps the meat from burning and pairs perfectly with the charcoal pork in both texture and flavor. Wrapping the charcoal pork and onions in the fresh lettuce served alongside made a bowl of rice disappear in no time. The savory cheonggukjang stew that came with the meal was also well-seasoned and deep in flavor, perfectly balancing the charcoal pork.

Instead of plain steamed rice, the set menu at Todam Hwadok Saengseongui comes with freshly cooked, piping-hot rice in a stone pot. The moment you open the lid, the fragrant rice aroma and moist, glossy grains are irresistible on their own.

After scooping out the rice, they pour warm water into the pot, and the savory sungnyung and crispy rice crust you enjoy at the end of the meal soothe your stomach gently and comfortably. After a filling meal, I took a light stroll along the Anyangcheon stream across from the restaurant. Filling up on good Korean food and then walking along the stream made for a perfectly healing dining outing.
