Café near Gyeryongsan National Park, Daejeon: Luonto chimney bread

In short

Luonto Sutonggol Branch is a three-floor café in Yuseong, Daejeon, a one-minute drive from Gyeryongsan National Park. Arriving on a Saturday at 1:30 p.m., I parked in the gravel lot beside Luonto and ordered plain chimney bread for 8,500 won and cinnamon chimney bread for 9,500 won, both served fresh from the oven. The chimney bread is as tall as a drink cup, and the plain tastes best straight out of the oven while the cinnamon is better once it cools.

Hi, this is Dooduji.

I was looking for a large café near Gyeryongsan National Park and found this place — it's famous for its signature chimney bread. Every single table had one haha. Honest review, let's go.

Where Luonto Sutonggol Branch is and when it opens

Luonto Sutonggol Branch is a 3-floor large café at 37 Sutonggol-ro 71beon-gil, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, just a 1-minute drive from Gyeryongsan National Park. It's also very close on foot. Closed every Monday and Tuesday, open Wed–Sun 11:00–21:00, last order at 20:00. They have baby chairs and parking too.

Apparently it used to be called Secret Garden. Seems like the name changed to Café Luonto.

Saturday afternoon parking at Luonto, gravel lot included

There's a parking lot right next to Luonto Sutonggol Branch, but when I visited at 1:30pm on a Saturday it was full, so I parked in the gravel lot next door instead.

Is there a kids' menu at Luonto?

Kids' drink menu and chimney bread dough display case

They even have a Pororo drink on the kids' menu! Since the chimney bread is baked fresh to order, the display case shows dough lined up instead of finished loaves.

Ordering at the kiosk and what was sold out

Luonto Sutonggol Branch uses kiosk ordering. There's one kiosk on the 1st floor and one on the 2nd floor. When I visited, bingsu (shaved ice) and cookies were sold out. It was Saturday afternoon so there were a lot of people.

If you've come to Luonto, the chimney bread landmark of Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, you've got to try the chimney bread, right? I ordered both plain and cinnamon.

Inside the first and second floors of Luonto

The 1st floor of Luonto Sutonggol Branch was crowded, as you'd expect on a weekend. The 2nd floor had a lot of families too!

Extra facilities include the kiosk, water, cups, baby chairs, and restrooms.

Let's head up from the 2nd floor to the 3rd.

The 3rd floor of Luonto Sutonggol Branch can also be rented as a venue. Overall it has a clean, studio-like feel.

The third-floor terrace at Luonto

The 3rd floor terrace seating was gorgeous too. I didn't go out, but the space beyond the window looked spacious.

Back down to the 2nd floor we go~

Entrance space leading to the 2nd floor terrace

There's a space on the 2nd floor leading out to the terrace. Wow, it's clean and pretty enough to hold an outdoor wedding here.

2nd floor outdoor terrace seating with a shade canopy

In autumn weather like this, having a coffee outside is nice too. There's a shade canopy so you don't need to worry about the sun.

Mini fountain on the terrace floor

There's a cute mini fountain on the floor haha.

Here's the view of the 2nd floor terrace from the 3rd floor. Since it's a large café with a wide terrace, group use is possible — reservations run from a minimum of 2 people up to a maximum of 100, in case that's useful to know!

What 5,800-won americano and 8,500-won chimney bread look like

Here comes the freshly baked, warm chimney bread. Luonto's signature dessert! Seeing it in person, it was huge haha.

Freshly baked chimney bread with a hollow center

True to its name, chimney bread is hollow in the middle. One whipped cream is included per chimney bread.

Why Luonto hands out crab-shaped plastic gloves

They give you a plastic glove for tearing the chimney bread apart, and the glove is really strange. It came in a crab shape and I thought it was defective, but when I tore it along the dotted line in the middle, it turned into a three-finger glove. Interesting!

Plain vs cinnamon chimney bread: which tastes better?

Crispy outside, moist and soft inside. Fresh out of the oven, it was nutty and so delicious.

  • Plain chimney bread: Tastiest right when freshly baked. Recommended as the go-to choice when visiting with family! Paired better with the whipped cream than the cinnamon.
  • Cinnamon chimney bread: Recommended for anyone who loves sweets! When taken home and eaten later, the cinnamon was far tastier than the plain. Once cooled, cinnamon is the better one.

Plain paired well with the whipped cream, while cinnamon was better eaten on its own.

Cross-section of moist chimney bread

The inside is moist and fluffy.

Hands tearing apart the chimney bread

There's also fun in tearing it apart haha. But if you wear the glove on both hands it's awkward to drink your beverage, so you end up wearing it on just one hand. Then someone has to hold the other end of the bread for you... so I guess that's why it's popular with couples. All around me I could hear giggling and snickering as they held pieces for each other haha.

A piece of chimney bread dipped in whipped cream

It really goes perfectly with the whipped cream. Dip the crispy-yet-moist bread into the soft cream and it's heaven right there.

Chimney bread and drinks on the table

The biggest difference between Luonto and a regular bakery café is that they serve freshly baked bread on the spot. So customers get to taste warm, crispy-yet-moist bread right away.

Plate of half-eaten chimney bread

It's a bit pricey, but given the size and the fact that it's served fresh out of the oven, I think it's worth visiting at least once. The drinks were solidly good too.

Sunlit seat by the plants on the 2nd floor

Sunlight was streaming into the 2nd floor just then, blending nicely with the greenery of the plants.

A peaceful afternoon near Gyeryongsan National Park

That spot got the most sunlight so people tended to avoid it, which left it quieter and more beautifully undisturbed. Just looking at it made me feel at ease.

Final verdict on Luonto Sutonggol Branch

If you're looking for a large café near Gyeryongsan National Park in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, I recommend Luonto Sutonggol Branch for trying the unique dessert, chimney bread.
