Solo sashimi takeout at Garak Market fish shop Yeongjae Susan, Seoul

In short

Yeongjae Susan is a sashimi and seafood shop on the first floor of Garak Mall's sales building, connected to Exit 2-1 of Garak Market Station in Songpa, Seoul. Eating alone, I took away the small Jeongwangchamhoe platter (gizzard shad, flounder, and red sea bream sashimi) for 65,000 won plus 5,000 won of sea squirt, and the free insulated bag with an ice pack got it home 30 minutes away without a single drop leaking. One small platter from Yeongjae Susan is plenty for a solo sashimi spread.

Yeongjae Susan's Jeongwangchamhoe takeout platter

Those days when you live alone but still want a proper plate of sashimi. Everyone knows that awkward feeling. Walk into a sashimi restaurant and the minimum order is for two people, which is way too much to finish solo. So this time I went the takeout route instead. I picked up sashimi from Yeongjae Susan at Garak Market and quietly ate it alone at home.

Spoiler: 65,000 won got me a really satisfying dinner 😁 For anyone hunting for a gizzard shad spot at Garak Market, I'm laying out the prices and packaging condition in detail.

The seafood market building is bigger and brighter than expected

Where is Yeongjae Susan? One minute from Garak Market Station

📍 Location Exit 2-1 of Garak Market Station connects directly to the seafood market entrance. It's just a 1-minute walk from the exit. There's a big "Seafood Market" sign on the outside of the building, so it's easy to find even on your first visit.

Yeongjae Susan's red sign visible from the aisle
The red sign catches your eye even from a distance

Once you're inside, there are tons of stalls, but Garak Market's Yeongjae Susan is in C-10 Zone Unit 133. The sign is red, so it stands out even from the aisle 👍 They also have a price board standing in front of the fish tanks, which was low-key convenient for someone eating alone since you can check prices before even asking.

🅿️ Parking Even if you drive, you get up to 2 hours of free parking support. The lot is spacious, so there was no circling around looking for a spot. This is probably the most important detail for anyone driving in.

What to order at Yeongjae Susan, a Garak Market gizzard shad shop

Yeongjae Susan's assorted sashimi menu board with photos

The whole menu is posted with photos, so it's easy to pick even if you don't know much about sashimi. There are especially many types of assorted sashimi platters. Of course, you can also order single items 👍 Sizes come in five tiers — mini, small, medium, large, and extra-large — and each menu item has its own price for each size.

Price list for Jeongwangchamhoe by size

I chose Jeongwangchamhoe (전광참회), which is short for gizzard shad, large flounder, and large red sea bream.

  • Jeongwangchamhoe Mini ₩40,000 · Small ₩65,000
  • Jeongwangchamhoe Medium ₩90,000 · Large ₩115,000
  • Jeongwangchamhoe XL ₩140,000

Since I was eating alone, I went with the small size, and in the end that turned out to be a genius move.

If you're eating alone, go small. That's really the only rule you need.

A shop tank full of gizzard shad
So much gizzard shad, must be the season

Gizzard shad has its own separate tank. There's a section clearly labeled "gizzard shad," and they scoop it out right from there to prepare on the spot. This might be exactly the scene people are picturing when they go looking for a fall gizzard shad spot at Garak Market 👀

Excellent store award plaques hanging next to the register

There were three plaques hanging on the wall next to the register. Awards for the food service category in 2025 and 2026, plus a delivery food category award for 2026. They're all Excellent Store awards from the Korea Consumer Industry Evaluation, so this is clearly a shop with a long history of takeout and delivery.

Free insulated bag: intact after a 30-minute trip home

Sashimi packed in an insulated bag with an ice pack
They didn't charge extra for the insulated bag

For takeout, Garak Market's Yeongjae Susan packed everything in an insulated bag. They didn't charge extra for it. They lined the inside carefully with an ice pack and secured the sashimi tray so it wouldn't shift around, so not a single drop leaked on the way home. My trip was under 30 minutes, and when I opened it up at home, everything was exactly as it should be 👍

They gave me the insulated bag for free, so I had zero worries about the 30-minute trip home.

Jeongwangchamhoe platter laid out at home
Once laid out at home, it turned into a huge spread

Here's what it looked like laid out at home. One sashimi platter comes with chogochujang (vinegared red pepper paste), wasabi, and pickled ginger all included as a set. There's nothing extra to prepare — just pull out a plate and chopsticks and the table is ready. As someone eating alone, this was my favorite part.

The small Jeongwangchamhoe platter, sized right for one person

Assorted sashimi platter with gizzard shad sekkoshi, large flounder, and large sea bream

Today's star is the gizzard shad. On one side there's a heap of gizzard shad sekkoshi (fine-boned thin-sliced sashimi), and on the other side the large flounder and large red sea bream are spread wide. With shredded radish and radish sprouts layered underneath too, even the small size looked pretty generous. I think the reason people call this a gizzard shad spot at Garak Market really comes down to that gizzard shad portion.

A heaping pile of gizzard shad sekkoshi

Honestly, I'm not usually a fan of sekkoshi. Feeling the bones while chewing always put me off. But the gizzard shad here was different. The bones weren't tough, so there was nothing bothersome while chewing, just a nutty flavor left behind.

Even I, someone who doesn't enjoy sekkoshi, kept reaching for the gizzard shad. I genuinely enjoyed eating it that day.

The silvery skin is left on

Pick up a piece and the oiliness comes through immediately — that's exactly the taste of fall gizzard shad, isn't it? Choosing the gizzard shad at Garak Market's Yeongjae Susan was the best decision I made that day.

Thickly sliced flounder and sea bream sashimi

The large flounder and large red sea bream were sliced thick, so the chewy texture really comes through. The flounder is bouncy while the sea bream feels a bit firmer. Here's the order I decided worked best for eating it:

  • Start with flounder, lightly dipped in chogochujang to warm up your palate
  • Sea bream with a bit of wasabi for a clean, mild flavor
  • Finish by going through the gizzard shad for a nutty ending
5,000-won worth of added sea squirt
This much sea squirt for just 5,000 won

I only added 5,000 won worth of sea squirt separately, and the portion was more generous than expected. The flavor wasn't overpoweringly strong, just a subtle ocean aroma, making it good to pop one in between bites of sashimi.

  • Jeongwangchamhoe small ₩65,000
  • Sea squirt add-on ₩5,000

Yeongjae Susan hours and takeout ordering tips

🕕 Hours Daily, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. 📅 Regular closures None, open year-round. Since it's open from early morning until night, it's easy to stop by even after work. I went on a weekday and got to order right away with no wait.

On weekends it can get crowded, so calling ahead to order in advance seems like a good idea! Since it's takeout sashimi, it tastes best eaten right when you get home, so it seems smartest to time your order to match your arrival. Gizzard shad especially gets watery the longer it sits!

🔆 Sashimi takeout discount tip 🔆 Apparently ordering through a Naver reservation gets you a discount, so it's worth checking before you go 👀

Who Yeongjae Susan is best for

  • Anyone who wants a full sashimi spread while eating solo — one small platter is plenty
  • Anyone who wants to properly taste fall gizzard shad — the sekkoshi here is soft
  • Anyone within 30 minutes of home — the insulated bag keeps everything just as it was

As my go-to gizzard shad spot at Garak Market, I'm planning to come back to Yeongjae Susan again next gizzard shad season 😎
