I'm honestly obsessed with tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes), so I went to Deokjane Bangatgan, famous as a snack restaurant near Sinnonhyeon Station! Actually this is a repeat visit haha. The space is clean and cozy, just right for a comfortable meal, and I took my time looking over the menu before ordering the most representative dishes.

What's on the Deokjane Bangatgan menu and self-serve bar?
Here's the Deokjane Bangatgan menu board. This is the first snack restaurant I've seen that only sells garaetteok (cylindrical rice cakes). That's how fresh the rice cakes are!

The self-serve bar has sauces, side dishes, water, and utensils.

It's an open kitchen so you can see exactly how cleanly everything is managed!!!! I went with takeout, choosing tteokbokki, assorted fried snacks, and burdock root gimbap together. The food didn't take long to come out either, so I had my takeout packed up in no time.

Rice cakes pulled fresh each morning: how is the tteokbokki?
Deokjane Bangatgan's tteokbokki has a bright red sauce that makes your mouth water just looking at it 🤤🤤. The potato salad on top was such an unusual touch, and I was looking forward to how it would blend with the sauce. I popped a rice cake straight into my mouth and, maybe because it's rice cake pulled fresh every morning, the texture was seriously chewy and bouncy. The more you chew, the more the nutty rice flavor spreads out — it felt like a completely different league from ordinary rice cakes.

The sauce isn't overly sweet — it's spicy-sweet in a way that's addictive without getting tiring haha. The savory heat clings to your tongue, so even people who can't handle spicy food much could probably enjoy this without worry. In particular, mixing in a bit of the nutty potato salad on top with the spicy sauce softened the heat while bringing out even more flavor — such an appealing combination.

What comes in the assorted fritters, and dipping them in tteokbokki sauce
The assorted fried snacks were generously stacked with kimmari (seaweed roll), squid, sweet potato, and mandu (dumplings), so there was plenty to pick and choose from. It looked great too — freshly fried, so a nutty aroma filled the air, and the batter looked super crispy!!! I dipped one piece lightly in soy sauce, and with a crunchy sound, the flavor of the filling filled my mouth with softness. There was no greasiness at all, and the thin batter let the natural flavor of the ingredients come through. Dipping the fried snack deep into the tteokbokki sauce and eating them together was truly top-tier!! The spicy sauce blended with the nutty crispy batter perfectly.

Burdock gimbap at Deokjane Bangatgan: packed full inside
Deokjane Bangatgan's burdock root gimbap (seaweed rice roll) also gives off a nutty sesame oil smell that stirs up your appetite. The fillings inside were generously packed, so you can tell at a glance it's stuffed full, right?!? Taking a big bite and chewing slowly, the sweet-savory braised burdock root has a crisp texture and a deep nutty flavor spreads out~ The rice-to-filling ratio was just right, and with the filling packed in, the seasoning balance was perfect.

It really stands out even among Sinnonhyeon restaurants, so if you love tteokbokki, this feels like a must-visit haha. The harmony of chewy rice cakes and sweet sauce is excellent, and I was practically gushing the whole time I ate.

Why Deokjane Bangatgan is worth it for tteokbokki in Gangnam
If you're looking for a Gangnam tteokbokki restaurant, don't hesitate — you should really visit. Every single dish was full of care, and I had a genuinely enjoyable meal from start to finish. The overall harmony of the food was excellent and the portions were generous for the price, so it was satisfying. This feels like the first place that would come to mind whenever I crave a clean snack meal!!! The special rice cake texture at Deokjane Bangatgan has a charm you just can't find anywhere else. After visiting in person, I immediately understood why it's so popular with so many people.

The seasoning on the fried snacks themselves was also just right, so they're mild and nutty even eaten plain haha. The texture holds up, so even the last piece stays crispy without going soggy. At this level of quality, it's probably one of the top snack restaurants near Sinnonhyeon. The fillings inside the fried snacks were nicely substantial too, so there was satisfying bite and it just put me in a good mood.

It's up there among the top Sinnonhyeon Station restaurants and Gangnam tteokbokki restaurants, so I'd recommend it to anyone who loves snack food. Next time I want to try some of the other side menu items too. Deokjane Bangatgan is also very accessible, making it perfect to stop by on the way home from work or on weekends. If you're craving delicious tteokbokki, a visit will give you a perfect meal you definitely won't regret.
