I went to Donbegi Gwang-an Branch, said to be a top spot for samgyeopsal (pork belly) near Gwangalli. I'd heard it was one of the best pork barbecue restaurants around Gwangalli, so I was excited even before getting there. Let's dig in, shall we?

Where is Donbegi Gwang-an Branch? Minrak-dong, walkable from Gwangalli
Donbegi Gwang-an Branch is over in Minrak-dong, which made it easy to walk over for a meal after hanging out at Gwangalli. Lately when I come to Busan I end up eating a lot of sashimi and seafood, but this time I was really craving proper meat, so I went looking for a good pork barbecue spot near Gwangalli and ended up here.

What cut is aged shoulder rack?
The dish that caught my eye most at Donbegi Gwang-an Branch was the aged shoulder rack. It looked a bit different from your typical pork belly or pork neck (mokssal) even before I tasted it.

It's a cut trimmed to keep the rib bone attached to the neck meat, so there was a hefty bone still on it, and the meat itself was thick — it looked delicious the moment it arrived.

Usually when I search for pork belly restaurants around Gwangalli, most places are all about samgyeopsal, so I really liked that Donbegi let me try shoulder rack instead.

Shoulder rack price and how much to order when dining solo
The aged shoulder rack was priced at ₩9,350 per 100g, and the tablet menu listed a ₩40,000 option, so I ordered that — roughly 400g. At first I wasn't sure how much that would be for one person, but the meat turned out thicker than expected, and each bite had a satisfying chew.

Even in the photo you can see a nice balance of lean meat and fat, and once the staff kindly grilled it for me, it looked even more appetizing once cooked. If you're the type who finds pork belly at Gwangalli's usual spots a bit too greasy, this could be a good option too.

How the thick aged shoulder rack tastes
Donbegi's shoulder rack had that clean, lean flavor typical of the neck area, but with enough fat attached that it wasn't dry. Thick cuts like this can turn out tough if not grilled properly, but this one kept its juices and had a tender bite, which I loved.

The more I chewed, the more a nutty flavor came through, and it felt a bit more special than regular pork neck. I'd wanted something different from the usual meal at a typical Gwangalli pork belly place, and I really felt like I'd made the right call coming to Donbegi.

Personally, the parts where lean meat and fat were both attached were the tastiest. With plain pork belly, eating a few pieces heavy on fat can start to feel greasy, but the shoulder rack struck a nice balance between the clean taste of the meat and the nutty richness of the fat — I really enjoyed it.

Even the meat close to the bone had great flavor, and I ate it right down to the last bite. So next time I'm at a pork belly restaurant in Gwangalli, I'm definitely ordering the aged shoulder rack again.

Is Donbegi Gwang-an Branch comfortable for solo diners?
The atmosphere at Donbegi Gwang-an Branch had that comfortable, typical barbecue-restaurant vibe, so it was easy to eat alone without feeling out of place. It's a good option for dinner after playing around Gwangalli, or whenever you're craving meat during a Busan trip.

Gwangalli has so many restaurants that it can be hard to decide where to go, but if you prefer a thick cut like shoulder rack over the usual pork menu, I'd recommend this place. And if you want to try something a bit different, even more so~

This time I ate about ₩40,000 worth of shoulder rack, and it was a satisfying meal in both taste and texture. It was tender yet still had a good chew, and above all, the juiciness really stuck with me.

Side dishes: bean sprout soup, scallion salad, white kimchi and myeongnan
The side dishes at Donbegi Gwang-an Branch, like the kongnamul soup (bean sprout soup) and scallion salad, were tasty too, which made the meat go down even more easily that day. I was happy with the banchan (side dishes).

Next time I'd like to also try other sides like steamed egg or a stew.

Wrapping the nicely grilled meat with baek-kimchi (white kimchi) and myeongran (salted pollock roe) was the finishing touch~
The staff grilled it perfectly and effortlessly, so I got to eat comfortably and deliciously.
