Cheonan chicken stew with wheat rice cakes: Sottture Dakdoritang

In short

Sottture Dakdoritang is a dakdoritang (Korean spicy chicken stew) restaurant in Seongjeong-dong, Cheonan, directly across from Lotte Mart. A whole-chicken pot costs 35,000 won, with flat mandu (thin pan-fried dumplings) at 5,000 won and self-serve fried rice at 2,000 won, and simmering the pot 3 more minutes at the table thickens the broth until the wheat rice cakes and potatoes take on the seasoning. The portion was generous for two people, and the fried rice finish made it a satisfying Seongjeong-dong dakdoritang meal.

They even had tips posted for how to eat it deliciously, so I could eat it properly haha

What we ordered at Sottture Dakdoritang and what it cost

  • Dak Han Mari (chicken for one) ₩35,000
  • Flat mandu ₩5,000
  • Self-serve fried rice ₩2,000

Besides the main dakdoritang, there were only side dishes on the menu! Such a true chicken-stew-specialist vibe 👍🏻

It's domestic Korean chicken, which made me trust it even more~

Restaurant scene with orders continually coming in

While sitting and waiting, orders kept coming in? Wow, I thought, everyone in Seongjeong-dong must order from here — a real dakdoritang hotspot, ㄷㄷ

Table seated and waiting for food

Side dishes and the self-serve bar

The basic side dishes came out first~ besides kimchi, there were onion pickles, seasoned danmuji (pickled radish), salad, and other sides that go well together

Extra side dishes come from the self-bar~ aprons and broth were also set out there. Nice that refills were easy 😊

Whole chicken stew, 35,000 won: simmer it 3 minutes longer

Sottture Dakdoritang's Dak Han Mari (₩35,000) — here it comes. Just looking at the red broth you can tell it's delicious... It comes already cooked, but they told us to simmer it about 3 more minutes~ let it bubble away a bit more haha

Waiting while looking at the cute chicken-shaped egg...☆

Dak Han Mari chicken stew topped with a chicken-shaped egg

The chicken pieces were nice and big, and it was packed generously with chewy wheat rice cakes (mil-tteok), king oyster mushrooms, potatoes, green onions, and more

We kept it simmering diligently while waiting, until it got a thick, rich feeling...!

Dakdoritang broth thickened from extra simmering

Flat mandu, 5,000 won: dipped in the chicken stew broth

I don't eat납작만두 (flat mandu) often, so as soon as I saw it on the menu I wanted to order it. I figured eating it with that red seasoning would be the perfect combo, haha

Thick, red dakdoritang broth with flat mandu too 🤭

Dipping the flat mandu in the broth. Seriously highly recommend it ㅜ. Dipping the cute chicken-shaped egg in the broth too... it's just an amazing combo 👍🏻

Chicken-shaped egg soaked in the broth

Keep it simmering on low heat and it gets even more insane... wow, really so good (!!) The chicken wasn't dry at all, no gamey smell, and even the seasoning was delicious to the very end

The chewy wheat rice cakes go perfectly with the seasoning too! You can even soak the flat mandu and eat it wrapped like ssam 👍🏻

Finishing with self-serve fried rice for 2,000 won

What does a Korean do after eating red broth? Of course, fried rice;;; It's self-serve fried rice but they still give you an egg and it's generous!

They fried it up neatly and diligently like this~ leaving just a little of the sauce aside and adding it back in while frying haha

Self-serve fried rice shaped into a heart

Pretty good at making fried rice hearts, right? Fry it until the sauce gets nice and thick — and you're done!

Maybe because the dakdoritang seasoning is so good, the fried rice? Obviously total honey-flavor perfection ㅠ﹏ㅠ!!! Even if you're full, you can't give up on this... you must finish it...!

Is one chicken enough for two people?

It said Sottture Dakdoritang's Dak Han Mari is 2–3 servings, and eating it as two people, we really got full~ With the flat mandu and fried rice on top, the fullness was... ㄷㄷ

From start to finish, even the last bite of fried rice was delicious without fail, so I kept saying 'this is so good' the whole time haha. If you're looking for a good dakdoritang place in Seongjeong-dong, I recommend Sottture Dakdoritang 🤤
