Folding-door seats at a Suwon chicken restaurant: Haenggung Jangjak

In short

Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is an oak-fired whole chicken restaurant just across from Suwon's Chicken Street, right beside Hwaseong Haenggung palace. Arriving at 5:30pm, the writer took a prime first-floor table by the open folding doors and ordered the corn cheese chicken with extra sausage: the meat stayed moist, and the sticky rice packed under the bird crisped up like nurungji (scorched rice). If you prefer oak-fired chicken to fried and want that open-air night-market feel, Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak is worth the trip.

A Suwon Chicken Street restaurant where you can really get that open-air night-market vibe!

It's Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak, located right next to Hwaseong Haenggung ❤

This isn't the deep-fried old-school chicken you'd normally think of — it's a moist style of chicken slowly turned over an oak firewood flame. There's no way this could taste bad, right?!

And I had it topped with a huge pile of corn cheese... honestly it was so good I nearly fainted!

Especially on a cool evening like this, it's a perfect spot for that open-air feel, so it'd make a great dinner stop after a date or outing around Suwon's Haenggung-dong ❤

The visuals were amazing but the taste was seriously amazing too, so I ended up drinking way more than I meant to?!!

* They have group seating fully set up, so it's also great for gatherings

Where is Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak, and where do you park?

Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak sits right across from Suwon Chicken Street, right beside Hwaseong Haenggung, so it was easy to find.

Haenggung-ro street and the area around the restaurant next to Hwaseong Haenggung

It's right near the Hwaseong Haenggung parking lot too, so accessibility was great — a good spot for dinner after wandering around Haenggung-dong ❤ If you're driving, I'd recommend using the Hwaseong Haenggung public street parking. Just keep in mind there's no parking at the restaurant itself and no parking vouchers provided!

Tip: free luggage storage lounge next to Hwaseong Haenggung

View of the Haenggung Village Traveler's Lounge right next to the restaurant

Here's a great tip — if you're looking for free luggage storage near Hwaseong Haenggung, you can use the Haenggung Village Traveler's Lounge, and it just so happens to be right next door!! It's easy for travelers to use too, which made me want to recommend this Suwon restaurant even more.

Chicken roasting over oak firewood in a corner of the restaurant

In one corner of the restaurant you could watch the chickens roasting over the firewood — and honestly, chicken cooked like that can't possibly taste bad, right? Slowly roasted over an oak fire, it has a whole different charm compared to a typical fried chicken place.

Inside Haenggung Jangjak: folding-door seats downstairs, group tables upstairs

The place is spread over two floors, so it's much bigger than I expected.

1st floor open-air seating with the folding doors open

The 1st floor folding doors were left open, so if you go this time of year you can really enjoy that open-air night-market feeling while you eat. I went around 5:30pm and was able to grab a prime seat right away 👍

This is the 2nd floor of Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak. It's big enough to easily handle a group, and since the 2nd floor is separate, it seemed like it'd be fun to book it out for a gathering :)

Entrance to the restroom inside the restaurant

The restroom is inside too, so that was convenient.

Choosing the menu: corn cheese chicken with extra sausage

Menu board listing the hanbang oak-fired chicken varieties

Here's the menu at Haenggung Jangjak Hanbang Tongdak! The hanbang (herbal medicine) oak-fired chicken felt like the original signature dish, but the corn cheese, fire chicken, smoked BBQ, and Suwon king galbi chicken all looked delicious too, so I really agonized over it. In the end, the menu I picked was corn cheese + added sausage ❤

What does the corn cheese chicken taste like?

When the chicken I ordered came out, I was floored just by the visuals 😍👍 The whole chicken sits on a hot iron plate, piled high with corn cheese on top. There was also a generous drizzle of sauce with a chili-ketchup kind of vibe, plus the added sausage — it all looked incredibly good.

Stretchy melted cheese and a drumstick being picked up

The cheese melted and stretched into long strings, and when I picked up a drumstick it was completely moist!!! You can eat the corn cheese on top of the chicken, or wrap it around the meat — either way, chicken and cheese is a combo that's hard to mess up.

Tender interior meat of the oak-fired chicken

The chicken meat looked tender just from looking at it ❤ Honestly, I'm personally not a big fan of fried whole chicken, but this oak-fired version was so full of moisture and genuinely delicious that I completely lost track of myself and just inhaled it!!!

Chicken meat topped with corn cheese being eaten

Even though it's roasted for a long time, the meat wasn't dried out at all, and you could really taste the clean, savory flavor of the chicken itself! On top of that, the sweet, savory sauce made it hard to stop reaching for more.

Sticky rice and scorched rice (nurungji) underneath the chicken

The sticky rice inside the chicken and its crisp nurungji (scorched rice)

There's sticky rice tucked inside the chicken, and the pressed parts crisp up like nurungji (scorched rice) — so you get two textures in one!! It's great eaten together with the chicken, and since you get rice along with the chicken and not just the meat alone, it worked well as an actual dinner.

A drink enjoyed alongside the chicken
The restaurant filling up with customers in the evening

As time went on, more customers filled in, and since the food went so well with drinks, I ended up drinking a fair amount that day! A perfect little schedule: tour Hwaseong Haenggung, wander the Haenggung-dong alleys, enjoy some cafés, then finish the evening with that open-air feeling and chicken.
