Suwon Italian restaurant for burrata pizza: The European

In short

The European Haenggung Main Branch is an Italian restaurant near Hwaseong Haenggung Palace in Suwon, Gyeonggi. I tried its arugula, jamón, and burrata pizza for ₩31,000, with moist wood-fired dough and generously piled toppings. Verdict: a lovely meal to pair with a Hwaseong Fortress walk.

Introduction to the wood-fired pizza at The European Haenggung Main Branch

Pizza baked by a chef formerly of The Shilla Seoul in a premium 485°C wood-fired oven—The European Haenggung Main Branch. The weather has been so lovely lately that I headed to Haenggung-dong in Suwon, perfect for a walk.

It is right near Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, so it is easy to reach, and there is plenty to see around here. I found a great restaurant near Hwaseong Haenggung Palace where you can enjoy truly authentic Italian flavors, so I had to share it with you. I visited The European Haenggung Main Branch, a Haenggung-dong pizza spot already much talked about among pizza fanatics!

A dining room of red brick and chandeliers

The exterior pairs antique red brick with mint-colored roof tiles, giving it the cozy, welcoming feeling of a small family home. Stacks of oak firewood for the oven by the entrance made it clear that this is the real deal: a Haenggung-dong wood-fired pizza specialist.

Step inside and a much more open, spacious dining room than you would expect from outside welcomes you. The high ceiling and windows on every side keep it from feeling stuffy at all, while red curtains and glamorous chandelier lighting create an elegant, romantic Renaissance-era mood.

In particular, if you sit near the kitchen, you can watch the whole process live—from kneading the dough and adding toppings to baking it in the wood-fired oven. A treat for the eyes, too!

Further inside, there are various wine cellars and a spacious semi-private room for groups. Every table is neatly set in advance with tableware and water, and ordering is easy via QR code.

Along with 15 varied wood-fired pizza options, there are authentic Italian dishes including homemade gnocchi, lasagna, fresh pasta, and steak. There is also a wide selection of bottled wines that pair wonderfully with Italian food, making it perfect for making a special day feel extra special.

Information about the Stefano Ferrara wood-fired oven

This place uses a Stefano Ferrara oven officially certified by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (AVPN). The dough undergoes 18 hours of low-temperature fermentation and 24 hours of aging before being baked at a blazing 485°C, so they say it is in a class of its own from the dough onward.

How was the arugula, jamón, and burrata pizza?

My choice that day was the Arugula Jamón Burrata Pizza (₩31,000), one of the best signature menu items.

The pizza is on the modest side rather than enormous, but the toppings piled high across it are visually stunning. A whole large ball of burrata cheese sits on top, along with generous amounts of salty jamón, fresh arugula, and cherry tomatoes.

The basic tomato-based sauce and fresh ingredients came together so well that, even while eating pizza, it felt like I was having a wholesome meal with a gorgeous premium salad on the side.

Burrata cheese and wood-fired pizza dough

The burrata was springy on the outside and burst creamy within, while the wood-fired pizza dough was chewy yet moist—an amazing combination of textures. It was not rich or greasy at all, so I kept reaching for another piece. The tangy carrot and radish pickles served alongside were also great between bites.

It really feels worth the price for proper wood-fired pizza!

A meal before or after a Suwon Hwaseong walk

Meal featuring wood-fired pizza

It was an excellent meal where you could taste the solid fundamentals of the cooking in every bite. If you want plentiful ingredients and the flavor of an authentic wood-fired oven on a completely different level from chain pizza, I highly recommend this Haenggung-dong pizza restaurant.
