I had an evening get-together in Omokgyo, so I stopped by Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch, known as an old-school gopchang (grilled beef intestine) spot. It's a place where you can taste 30 years of handmade garlic gopchang, and with the pan piled high and the fire show on top of it, it was fun just to watch. It's close to Omokgyo Station too, so it was easy to get to, and the savory smell of gopchang cooking built up my anticipation before I'd even taken a bite.
Where is Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch?

You can feel the old-school gopchang restaurant vibe just from the outside. The big red sign at Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch stands out even from a distance. Rather than a flashy new-style storefront, it had that neighborhood-favorite feel of a place that's held down the same spot for a long time.

Next to the entrance was a standing sign and menu photos announcing it as a gopchang specialty restaurant, and being an easy walk from Omokgyo Station, it wasn't hard to find at all. It felt like a comfortable place to head to when looking for a company dinner or evening meal spot in Mokdong.
Inside Omokgyo Gopchang: a retro room built for group dinners

A spacious interior with retro charm, good for group dinners. Round and square tables were arranged with plenty of room, making it comfortable for a casual meal for two but also well suited as a group dinner spot in Mokdong.

On the walls, posters and framed pieces telling the story of garlic gopchang and Omokgyo Gopchang, along with garlic decorations, gave off that retro feel unique to an old gopchang restaurant. On one side, a red neon sign spelling out 'Omokgyo Gopchang' glowed brightly, and the window seats had a cozy, street-food-tent kind of feel.

Each table already had a burner, tongs, and scissors set out, making it easy to start grilling gopchang right away, and overall the well-kept space felt easy to visit for gatherings or an evening drink.
What we ordered: traditional handmade garlic gopchang and hwangso gopchang

That day we ordered one each of the signature traditional handmade garlic gopchang, sold in a daily limit of 20 servings, and the hwangso gopchang, packed with gop (intestine fat). It was a good combination — garlic-infused gopchang alongside the savory, chewy classic gopchang. We paired it all with beer and soju to enjoy it properly.
The free sundubu-jjigae and cheonyeop that come with every order

A spicy sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew) came out complimentary. Before the main gopchang arrived, the sundubu-jjigae came first as a complimentary dish. The bubbling stone pot was generously filled with soft tofu, and the spicy, rich broth flavor really got the appetite going. It went well with a shot of soju while waiting for the gopchang, and felt like more than just a basic side dish.

The basic side dishes were also arranged neatly, good for eating alongside the gopchang. Tangy accompaniments that cut the richness came out along with crunchy vegetables, good for cleansing the palate in between bites. Rather than just eating gopchang on its own, the side dishes brought the flavors into balance, and it was an easy pairing to enjoy as a drinking snack too.

Chewy cheonyeop (beef tripe) to enjoy. Cheonyeop also came out as a basic side. Its bumpy, chewy texture made it easy to pick at lightly before the gopchang arrived, and its clean flavor paired well as a drinking snack too. A welcome basic item that adds to the atmosphere you only get at a gopchang restaurant.
What one grill plate holds, and the staff fire show

A generously packed visual on one pan. The traditional handmade garlic gopchang and hwangso gopchang came out piled full on one pan, and the first impression was pretty hearty. Around the gopchang in the center sat makchang (beef bung) and yeomtong (beef heart), along with bean sprouts, chives, onion, and potato, making for an appetizing spread of color. The pan was packed edge to edge, the kind of visual you want to photograph the moment it arrives.

A fire show that grabs your attention the moment it arrives. As soon as the gopchang came out, the staff member immediately performed a fire show. Flames shot up over the pan, instantly livening up the mood, and it added the extra fun of watching. Seeing the intense heat with the gopchang and vegetables sizzling away was pretty impressive, and made for good photos and videos too.

Once the fire show ended, the gopchang and makchang started sizzling. With bean sprouts, onion, potato, and chives arranged around the edges, watching them cook together with the fat from the gopchang already looked delicious.

At first, the staff member checked and flipped things themselves, so we could just relax and wait. As time passed, the surface browned nicely and the distinctive savory aroma of gopchang deepened.

Once the gopchang was cooked through somewhat, scallion kimchi was added to grill alongside it. Cooking the scallion kimchi and vegetables together in the savory fat rendered from the gopchang made the whole pan even more generous, and it was fun mixing in different things to eat together.
Sauces, grilled garlic and a drink alongside the gopchang

My friend went for soju, I went for beer.. we each enjoyed it our own way.

The well-cooked gopchang got dipped right into the spicy sauce. The tangy, spicy kick added to the savory, rich gopchang cut through the greasiness and really woke up the appetite. Piling grilled chives generously onto the gopchang also worked well together. The fragrant chives blended naturally with the deep flavor of the gopchang, making each bite even richer.

The garlic tucked in between the gopchang pieces was really impressive. It really is a better combination when eaten with garlic.. garlic gopchang lets you feel the flavor and texture even more when dipped in sesame oil dip.

Picking up a piece of well-cooked gopchang, the surface had a proper golden-brown sear. When chewed, it was chewy while a savory flavor spread through the inside, really letting you feel the appeal of the gopchang itself.

It was savory even eaten plain, but paired with the spicy sauce the flavor changed again. A spicy savoriness followed after the initial richness, so I kept reaching for more, and it went well with a shot of soju or beer too. After finishing the beer I had soju for the first time in 10 years.. mmm~~~ maybe it's because the food was so good, but it went down smoothly... haha
Is Omokgyo Gopchang a good Mokdong group dinner spot?

Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch had it all — the atmosphere of 30 years of tradition, the generously piled pan, and the staff's fire show — a place where properly enjoying gopchang is fun in itself. Ordering both the traditional handmade garlic gopchang and hwangso gopchang together let us compare their different charms, and with makchang, yeomtong, and various vegetables added in, the spread felt substantial. The complimentary sundubu-jjigae and cheonyeop were satisfying too, and pairing the gopchang with soju or beer made it a place that comes to mind when looking for a Mokdong restaurant or a group dinner spot in Mokdong.

After paying the bill.. I was touched by the thoughtfulness of them even handing over a heotgae stick!!!
