For a family birthday, we went to Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch (고기9단 침산직영점) for beef. We had anchangsal (hanger steak) and hwangje galbisal (emperor-style beef rib meat) with Korean side dishes and extra dishes, then finished with patbingsu (shaved ice with sweet red beans).

Gogi 9dan visit and parking information

There was a spacious dedicated parking lot, which made driving convenient. High chairs were also available.

How were the seating and atmosphere for a family meal?

The interior was bright, with a restaurant-like atmosphere. As we entered, a chef was trimming beef at the open butcher counter, and plaques were displayed to one side.

A staff member kindly showed us to our table. Along with tables for four, there were larger tables suitable for family gatherings or work dinners. Each table had lattice-style partitions, which made it feel more private for our group.

We sat by a second-floor window. I liked being able to watch the rain outside without making eye contact with people passing on the street.

What came with the set ordered with the beef?

The menu included beef, pork, side dishes, sotbap (pot-cooked rice), and desserts. We ordered anchangsal and hwangje galbisal with the Gogi 9dan Set. For ₩18,000, the set included Korean beef yukhoe (seasoned raw beef), pork kimchi jjigae, jjolmyeon (spicy chewy noodles), and fresh-wasabi sushi.

The lunch specials also included a meat set meal, bibimbap, naengmyeon, stew, and shabu kalguksu. We did not try them this time, but there appeared to be a varied lunch selection.

How were the basic side dishes and accompanying dishes?

The basic table setting came with neatly arranged Korean side dishes. There was enough to eat with rice on its own, and I especially liked the japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) and gejang (marinated crab). We were told that house-made side dishes could also be purchased separately.

Each item in the Gogi 9dan Set tasted good, and the portions felt generous. We kept the kimchi jjigae beside the table while eating the meat, then had it with a bowl of rice at the end.

Which did I prefer: hwangje galbisal or anchangsal?

When the anchangsal and hwangje galbisal arrived, their marbling and color stood out. I took photos before grilling them.

We grilled the hwangje galbisal over charcoal first. A family member cooked it, and we ate it without cooking it too much. It was savory and juicy, with a subtle charcoal aroma. Changing up the side dishes and sauces gave us different combinations to enjoy.

Next, we grilled the anchangsal. It was cut thick, so I was looking forward to its texture.

The anchangsal was juicy too. Since I like the texture of thick-cut meat, I preferred the anchangsal. I put yukhoe or grilled beef on the fresh-wasabi sushi, and had jjolmyeon when the meat started to feel a little heavy.

At the end, we had the kimchi jjigae we had saved with a bowl of rice. It contained plenty of pork, and the tangy flavor of well-fermented kimchi made it a good way to finish with rice.

What dessert did we have after the meal?

During the meal, I also saw a robot bring ordered dishes to tables. Near the end, a staff member brought us patbingsu even though we had not ordered it separately. It was nice to end with a cool dessert.

On the way out, there were also after-meal offerings such as instant coffee mix, maesil (plum drink), and ppeongtwigi (puffed rice snack). With an ice cup available, I made an Americano and drank it cold on the way home.

The thick-cut anchangsal, japchae, and gejang were the most memorable parts of this family birthday meal. We enjoyed the beef with several accompanying dishes and dessert, and our whole family finished the meal feeling happy.
