Gumi hanjeongsik restaurant: black goat suyuk and apple makgeolli

In short

Irojeong Gumi Geumosan Direct Branch is a hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) restaurant on Bakjeonghui-ro in Gumi, Gyeongbuk. Visiting with both parents, the writer ordered a half plate of snow-flower wild ginseng black goat suyuk (boiled sliced meat) and a seafood pancake with a whole octopus, then spotted Milyang apple makgeolli (rice wine) on the menu to go with them. With a self-serve bar, a kids' play room and a café corner for dessert, Irojeong works well for a family meal out with parents.

Hi everyone! It's Hyeonsu, the youngest of six siblings. Today I'm introducing a Gumi restaurant I visited with my parents — Irojeong Gumi Geumosan Direct Branch, a Korean set-meal (hanjeongsik) specialist. I heard it's known as the first place in the country to serve a sanghwang mushroom loach set, so I went to check it out with my parents.

Where is Irojeong in Gumi, and how is the parking?

Irojeong Gumi Geumosan Direct Branch is at 32 Bakjeonghui-ro, Gumi-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Heading straight along Bakjeonghui-ro from Sangmo High School toward Geumo-daero, it's only about 200m away, so it wasn't hard to find.

We took a taxi with my parents this time, but there's parking space for 60+ cars in front of the restaurant, so it looked convenient for driving too.

How many people fit in Irojeong's private rooms?

The interior of Irojeong Gumi Geumosan Direct Branch was spacious and clean overall, a good space for family visits. If you're looking for a Gumi hanjeongsik restaurant for family gatherings or group meals, there are separate private rooms here too!

There are three 10-person rooms that can seat anywhere from 6 to 30 people, and opening the doors between rooms lets up to 30 people share one space. The standard usage time is 1.5 hours, and if you need more time, you're asked to mention it in advance when booking.

There's also a play room that's great for visiting with kids. It has everything from arcade machines to a motorcycle game, so I liked that there's a space to keep kids entertained during the meal!

On one side there's also a self-serve bar with various side dishes and watermelon for dessert, plus free white rice! You can help yourself to more banchan (side dishes) or rice whenever you run low, which seemed great for a family meal.

Half plate of snow-flower wild ginseng black goat suyuk for three

There were three of us that day — my parents and me — and we ordered a half plate of snow-flower wild ginseng black goat suyuk (boiled sliced black goat meat) and a whole-octopus seafood pancake.

After a short wait, the side dishes were neatly laid out. There was japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), gochu-doenjang muchim (chili peppers with soybean paste), kimchi, and more — all clean and appetite-whetting overall.

And the main dish, the snow-flower wild ginseng black goat suyuk half plate! I thought 'half plate' would mean a small portion, but there was actually quite a lot of meat. The meat was surrounded by plenty of silver ear mushroom, and topped with snow-flower wild ginseng, so it looked like a proper health-boosting meal from the start. Underneath the meat was a thick bed of chives, and eating the black goat suyuk together with the chives, the flavors matched really well and made it even more delicious. Since I was visiting with my parents, having a health-boosting dish like this on the menu made it even better.

Seafood pancake with a whole octopus

The whole-octopus seafood pancake we ordered as a side was also better than expected. True to its name, one whole large octopus went in as-is, which made quite an impression before we even took a bite. It was fried nicely all over, crispy outside and moist inside — a great texture. There was plenty of seafood in it too, so it worked well as a side to go with the suyuk.

Milyang apple makgeolli on the menu: the dinner drinks table

It's dinner, so a glass of soju was a given!

But while looking at the menu, my mom and I spotted Milyang apple makgeolli (rice wine), which we'd never seen before, and switched right over to it. My dad stuck with soju while we drank the Milyang apple makgeolli — it was nice to discover something different to enjoy with the meal.

After finishing our meal, we could also use the café corner. There was coffee of course, along with sipjeondaebo tea, sujeonggwa (cinnamon punch), sikhye (sweet rice drink), and even ice cups. There were also old-fashioned snacks like gangjeong (rice puffs), so we could enjoy a simple dessert right after eating.

Being able to handle everything from the meal to dessert in one place is especially convenient when visiting as a family! It would also suit family gatherings or group meals in Gumi, and I'd recommend Irojeong Gumi Geumosan Direct Branch especially to anyone looking for a Gumi restaurant to visit with parents or a Gumi hanjeongsik spot for a health boost.
