I started looking for a seafood market near home, and it turned out 'Yeongjae Susan' was getting a lot of buzz as a must-visit spot at Gaklak Market. So partly as a mood-changer, partly for the drive, we headed off to Gaklak Market with excitement 🔥

We had no idea what we were doing at first and parked on B2, only to find out later that was a reserved zone! Haha. Visiting customers like us need to go down to B3 🚘 I'd strongly recommend parking near the E09 area on B3 — there's an escalator right there that makes it super easy to get up to the store.

Riding the escalator up to the 1st floor, we found the lively atmosphere of a seafood market with all kinds of sashimi restaurants. But today we had one destination and one only: straight to 'Yeongjae Susan.' It's right on the right as you come up, so it was easy to find without wandering — no wonder it's known as a go-to sashimi restaurant at Gaklak Market.

From plump live shrimp and gizzard shad that are perfectly in season right now, to fresh king crab, live squid, sea cucumber, and live octopus — the tanks were packed with all kinds of seafood.

And for autumn, you can't skip gizzard shad — the fish so good there's a saying that even a runaway daughter-in-law comes back for it. Watching them swim around, I understood why this place is known as a top spot for gizzard shad at Gaklak Market.

Oh, and on one side there was a huge tank full of blue crabs. I was tempted for a second, but stayed focused on the sashimi plan...

When we ordered our sashimi, the owner kindly asked if we needed ingredients for spicy fish stew. I really appreciated the offer, but... our two-person household doesn't have a big enough pot for fish stew, so sadly we had to pass 🥹 I really need to get a proper pot soon. Next time, I'm definitely bringing home the stew ingredients too!

While we were browsing, the packaging finished quickly and they called our number. But when they handed over the bag, I was genuinely surprised... is this really what a fish market packs your order in? I've been to plenty of seafood markets, but this is the first time I've seen sashimi packed this neatly in such a nice cooler bag. Since it was a nice Saturday evening, we decided to go all in and set up a full drinking party 🔥 The moment we opened the cooler bag, this is the sashimi that greeted us... isn't it amazing?? We quickly set out a piece of sashimi and clinked our glasses together 🥂 Wow... the jack mackerel was genuinely delicious! I totally got why Yeongjae Susan is famous as a top sashimi restaurant at Gaklak Market. Not just the jack mackerel — the large flounder and large red seabream included in the platter were also incredibly firm and packed with savory flavor 🤍 Personally, I loved the chewy texture of the large flounder. They even included the fin part, my favorite, so I happily finished every last bite 👍🏻
