Visited Sushi Hwa, famous for flame-seared sushi in Gimhae's Bongridan-gil! If you love sushi with that smoky char aroma, this is a must-visit sushi restaurant in Bongridan-gil!!!

Sushi Hwa
Where is Sushi Hwa, and is there parking?
Sushi Hwa is on the 1st floor of 32 Gimhae-daero 2315beon-gil, Gimhae-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, in Bongridan-gil. There seems to be room for about 2-3 cars to park in front of the restaurant.

From the outside alone, Sushi Hwa already gives off that smoky, char-grilled vibe.

I deliberately went outside lunch hours, but the crowd was real, haha. Already proving itself as a genuine Gimhae Bongridan-gil favorite.

Solo seats and high chairs at Sushi Hwa
Sushi Hwa has solo seating set up nicely, so it seems good for eating alone too. They also had high chairs.
The cozy interior gave off a slight Japan-like feel. Sushi Hwa also has its own private restroom!

Looking at Sushi Hwa's interior reminded me of Okinawa, Japan, where I went the year before last.
Now, seated! You order through the tablet set up at each table.

What comes in the 38,000 won flame-seared sushi set?
What we ordered was the Sushi Hwa flame-seared sushi set! It's flame-seared sushi (27 pieces) + salad + udon or cold soba, priced at ₩38,000.
Sauce, paper cups, utensil holder, and tissues were already set on the table. At the time, there was an event running where writing a Naver receipt review got you a choice of a drink or 2 pieces of sushi.
First to arrive: tube wasabi, salad and udon
After a short wait, the salad, udon, and blueberries came out first.

At Sushi Hwa in Gimhae, fresh wasabi comes out whole in a tube, so you squeeze out as much as you want into a small dish. Personally I'm a wasabi lover, and Sushi Hwa's wasabi had an excellent sharp, tingling kick!

Fresh salad first~ the yuzu sauce drizzled on top was tangy and perfect for whetting the appetite.

Since you choose between cold soba or udon, I chose udon, and the noodles were springy while the broth was warm and rich — I slurped it down in no time. The fish cake in the udon was tasty too, haha.

For side dishes there was pickled radish and ginger, plus blueberries, which I love. I originally planned to save the blueberries for last, but couldn't wait, so I kept popping one in between bites — sweet with a slight tang, they gave my mouth a refreshing reset. Surprisingly memorable item 🫐

27 pieces of sushi seared over an open flame
Finally, the main dish — the Sushi Hwa flame-seared sushi appears! The table next to us saw our sushi and asked what it was, then ordered the same thing, haha. The visuals alone are no joke!

The lightly charred look seems to make it even more appetizing. Sushi Hwa has not only raw sushi but a wide variety of flame-seared sushi menu items, so it seems approachable even for people who aren't big on raw food.

The flame-seared sushi had a nice, balanced mix — wagyu, salmon, shrimp, scallop, egg, fried tofu pouch and more — so it was great to enjoy a variety of flavors. When ordering the Sushi Hwa flame-seared sushi set, you can choose a sauce, either garlic sauce or spicy sauce, and since we wanted to try a variety, we ordered half-and-half.

Garlic sauce vs spicy sauce: ordering half and half
So the sushi comes out separated like this — garlic sauce sushi and spicy sauce sushi.
The garlic sauce was soft and nutty with a subtle garlic aroma rising up 🧄 The flame-seared sushi's distinctive charred flavor paired with the garlic sauce better than expected.

The spicy sauce added a slight kick that had me reaching for more, again and again. It wasn't too spicy, just the right amount of heat, which was great.

Ordering half-and-half definitely made switching back and forth more fun. If it's your first time at Sushi Hwa in Gimhae, I recommend going half-and-half to try a variety!

Sushi Hwa in Gimhae seems to use fresh, quality ingredients across the board. A great sushi restaurant in Gimhae's Bongridan-gil for dates, friends, or family gatherings — definitely recommend a visit to Sushi Hwa!
