Hanam Misa Japanese restaurant: two salmon rice bowls at Roi Sikdang

In short

Roi Sikdang Hanam Misa Main Branch is a Japanese home-style restaurant near Mangwolcheon stream in Hanam, Gyeonggi. Over a weekend lunch, two kinds of salmon were compared side by side — the herb-aged salmon rice bowl set and the yuja salmon jang (soy-marinated salmon) set served in earthenware, both 17,900 won, plus mini tempura at 8,000 won; the salmon was thick-cut with no fishy taste, and the rice, a blend of Gyeongju Samgwang and Buyeo Sindongjin varieties, was the most memorable part. Choose the herb-aged salmon rice bowl for clean, mild salmon, or the yuja salmon jang for salmon with seasoning soaked right through.

What the restaurant and seating are like

The inside of Roi Sikdang is done up in wood tones — clean and warm! It has an open kitchen and an overall comfortable vibe, so it was nice for a date, and I saw plenty of families there too haha. Since it seats up to 12 people, it also looked good for a family meal out or a small gathering!

Why Roi Sikdang blends two kinds of rice

One thing that stood out at Roi Sikdang was how much care they put into the rice! Apparently, based on the owner's experience growing up with a father who ran a small rice mill, they place real importance on cooking rice properly with good rice and good water. They use the best ratio of Gyeongju Samgwang rice and Buyeo Sindongjin rice, and even use natural bedrock water from Jirisan mountain to cook it 👀 You can actually check the rice they're currently using and its milling date right at the restaurant!

The à la carte version comes with the main dish plus diced radish kimchi, pickled radish, and miso soup, while the set adds steamed egg, karaage, and dessert fruit. The price difference is only ₩2,000, so if you want to try a bit of everything, going with the set isn't a bad idea haha.

There's also a separate menu for kids, so if you're looking for a place to eat with children in Misa or a spot for a family meal out, this could be a good choice! We ordered the yuja salmon jang set, the herb-aged salmon rice bowl set, and mini tempura haha.

Mini tempura with shrimp tempura and karaage

What comes in the 8,000-won mini tempura?

First up, the mini tempura we ordered to go with the mains! It comes with shrimp tempura, crab tempura, karaage, and even fries, so you get to try a little of everything. It was great as a side to nibble on bit by bit while eating the main dish haha.

How does the herb-aged salmon rice bowl taste?

First, the herb-aged salmon rice bowl! They apparently trim the salmon themselves and age it for 24 hours, and the salmon was piled on generously, in nice thick cuts. Maybe because of that, the salmon was soft and had almost no fishy taste — really good haha.

And the rice — I genuinely thought it was delicious while eating it! The grains were chewy in just the right way and nutty, and it paired so well with the salmon. Earlier I mentioned how much care goes into the rice and water, and after tasting it, I understood why they make such a big deal about it.

Herb-aged salmon rice bowl or yuja salmon jang: which to order?

My partner ordered the yuja salmon jang! It's salmon jang aged for 24 hours in an earthenware pot, and this one also had big, thick pieces of salmon. Salmon jang can sometimes be way too salty at other places, but Roi Sikdang's version wasn't overly salty, so it paired perfectly with rice! The salmon was soft and clean-tasting with no fishy notes, so this one was also delicious haha.

If you want to enjoy the plain, clean taste of the salmon itself, go with the herb-aged salmon rice bowl; if you like your salmon seasoned and eaten with rice, the yuja salmon jang is the way to go.

Is Roi Sikdang Hanam Misa worth a visit?

Roi Sikdang, visited for lunch during a weekend date in Misa! The salmon was great, but the rice itself was especially good, and after eating it I understood why they care so much about the rice and water haha. If you're looking for a clean lunch spot near Mangwolcheon, or searching for a rice bowl place near Misa station or a Japanese home-style restaurant, give it a try! Next time I want to go back for soba or one of the other rice bowls 🍚
