What did everyone pick for lunch today? I recently went to a brand new restaurant in Dunsan-dong, Daejeon — a hotspot for office workers and packed with good eats. I'd been eyeing this place every time I walked past because of its jaw-dropping visuals, and I finally made it there: Hanppong Dunsan!!

If you love gukbap (rice soup) and galbitang (short rib soup), this post is going to make you want to run over right now. Let's get into my vivid review of a broth so rich and a portion of meat so massive it left me gasping!!

Where is Hanppong Dunsan, and how far is it from City Hall Station?

Hanppong Dunsan is about 470m on foot from Exit 2 of City Hall Station. A clean, sleek white-toned sign catches your eye right away. True to the phrase on it — 'a galbitang and gukbap specialist made with care' — the entrance already has a certain presence.

There's also a standing sign out front that reads 'Limited to 130 servings a day,' which sent my expectations through the roof — clearly a place putting everything on the line for flavor!!

Hanppong Dunsan menu and prices

Right by the entrance stands a large banner showing all the signature menu items at a glance. From mountain-high galbitang to herbal bakute, doganitang, Korean beef ox head gukbap, bone broth pork gukbap, and ox blood haejangguk, it's packed with hearty, restorative dishes. Prices start from ₩9,000, so it's a great combo of value and substance!!

Inside Hanppong Dunsan: does it work for groups?

Step inside Hanppong Dunsan and you're greeted by spacious, clean wood-toned tables. The seating is roomy and comfortable enough to work well for group gatherings or company dinners. A large menu board is mounted on the wall, so you can browse comfortably from your seat.

Overall, the place is kept spotlessly clean, so you can eat with total peace of mind.

The signature mountain-high galbitang: why the name?

Finally, the main dish I ordered — mountain-high galbitang — arrived bubbling away in a stone pot!!

The moment it came out, I understood exactly why it's called 'mountain-high.' A massive, heavy rib bone juts straight out of the stone pot, and the sheer visual was too much not to photograph!!

On top of the clear, deep-looking broth sits a generous pile of finely sliced green onion, pushing the appetizing factor to the max. Lifting the giant rib with chopsticks reveals thick, tender meat clinging to it that steals your attention completely. It's been simmered so long that it's not chewy at all — it pulls apart smoothly along the grain.

There's not a hint of gamey smell, just a savory meaty aroma drifting up that made my mouth water uncontrollably!! Digging through the broth, more and more meat kept turning up — genuinely moving.

Taking a sip of the broth first, the deep, rich flavor of the bone broth spreads through your whole mouth, and it feels like your entire body just melts. The seasoning is spot on — clean yet substantial — and I couldn't put my spoon down.

Stirring rice into Hanppong's rich bone broth

After dipping the tender rib meat into the special sauce, I poured a generous scoop of white rice into the remaining rich broth.

The hot broth seeps right into every grain of rice, completing the perfect bowl of gukbap.

Top it off with a piece of well-fermented kkakdugi (radish kimchi) or kimchi, and you'll feel the ultimate satisfaction that washes away a whole day's fatigue.
