Pink glass-walled restaurant in Gwangju Suwan, family lunch: Bueokgan

In short

Bueokgan Suwan Branch is a pasta and wood-fired pizza restaurant on Suwanro 106beon-gil in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. Remembering how good the Sangmu branch was, the writer went to the Suwan branch and found a completely different room in pink with floor-to-ceiling windows, plus kids' meal trays and unbreakable cups for a lunch of sweet potato fries, carbonara, basil margherita and seafood tomato pasta shared with a child. Of the four, the basil margherita was the favourite.

Where is Bueokgan Suwan Branch, and what are its hours?

Bueokgan Suwan Branch is a Western-style restaurant at 37 Suwanro 106beon-gil, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, South Korea. It's open daily 11:30–21:00 (last order 20:20), with break time 15:00–17:00, and parking is available in front of the building.

I had such a good meal at the Sangmu branch of Bueokgan that this time I checked out the Suwan branch!

How the pink, glass-walled Suwan branch differs from Bueokgan Sangmu

Since it's a chain, I went in thinking "the vibe inside will probably be similar~" but nope, haha.

The atmosphere was so different from what I expected that it felt like a brand new place. Even though it's the same Bueokgan, it had a different vibe from the Sangmu branch, which was fun :)

The first thing that caught my eye walking in was how pink pink the interior was! Combined with a cozy feel, the overall mood was warm and comfortable.

And the store has floor-to-ceiling windows, so photos come out really pretty haha. Even though I visited during the day, the light streaming in made it great for taking pictures 📸 There are also quite a lot of tables, so you probably don't need to worry too much about seating.

Seating and kiosk ordering at Bueokgan Suwan Branch

Bueokgan Suwan Branch has everything from tables good for two up to an 8-person table, so it seemed good for a date as well as gatherings with friends or family meals out. There's a kiosk at every table too, which made ordering easy!

Eating with kids: children's meal trays and unbreakable cups

They brought out trays and cutlery for kids too. The tray was light to use and a pretty pink color, which was so cute haha. They also gave us unbreakable cups, which made things easier for the kids to use.

The four dishes ordered at Bueokgan Suwan Branch

We ordered a pretty wide variety of dishes that day.

  • Sweet potato fries
  • Carbonara
  • Basil margherita
  • Seafood tomato pasta

Basil margherita: better than the jambon pizza

When I visited before, I enjoyed the jambon pizza, but this time I wanted to try something new so I ordered the basil margherita. For my taste, the basil margherita was way, way better than the jambon pizza haha.

The pizza itself wasn't too heavy — it had a fresh, faintly sweet taste, with basil aroma coming through now and then, so I kept reaching for another slice. If you like basil, you'll probably love this.

Best of all, the kids ate it better than I expected. When looking for dishes to share with kids, I usually worry about ones that are too strongly flavored, but this one worked well for sharing — very satisfying!

Sweet potato fries at Bueokgan Suwan Branch

And the sweet potato fries! I was satisfied with this dish before too, so I picked it the moment I saw it on the menu haha. The sweet potato's sweetness makes it good to eat alongside the main dishes. Especially when visiting with kids, it seems like a good idea to order a side dish like this one.

Carbonara at Bueokgan Suwan Branch

The carbonara was delicious as always. The thick, creamy sauce blended well with the pasta noodles, giving that "ah, this is the taste" feeling with the first bite haha.

The sauce wasn't too runny and was just thick enough for my taste.

Seafood tomato pasta at Bueokgan Suwan Branch

We also ordered the seafood tomato pasta, and I enjoyed this one a lot too. The tangy tomato flavor combined with the seafood for a really nice depth of flavor. And the shrimp inside was plumper than expected, not bland at all!

Is Bueokgan Suwan Branch worth a family lunch in Gwangju?

Overall, this was another satisfying meal. Honestly, because I had such a good memory of eating at the Sangmu branch, I assumed the Suwan branch would be similar, but once I got there the atmosphere was so different it felt like visiting a whole new place.

The pink, cozy interior was especially pretty and great for photos, and I loved that they prepared kids' trays and cutlery too. The food overall was satisfying! Out of everything, the one I liked best this time was the basil margherita 🍕

If you're looking for good restaurants or brunch spots in the Suwan district, or want to eat pasta with kids in a nice-looking space, Bueokgan Suwan is worth a visit :)
