Changwon pork BBQ family dinner with cold buckwheat noodles: Godansu

In short

Godansu Changwon Yongho Branch is an aged-pork Korean BBQ restaurant in the basement of Changwon's Garosu-gil. A meetup with a cousin turned into a spontaneous family dinner with an aunt and uncle: five servings of hangjeongsal (pork jowl) and samgyeopsal (pork belly), then pork neck and gabrisal (pork collar cap), finished with mool memil-myeon (cold buckwheat noodles), bibim-myeon and soft tofu doenjang stew. Staff grill every cut for you and there is a private room, so Godansu works well for a group dinner in Yongho-dong, Changwon.

I was in Changwon for an appointment and the timing worked out to meet up with my cousin Gon~~~ haha

I was looking for good food on Changwon's Garosu-gil and got drawn in by a BBQ place called Godansu — then I saw a photo of a baek-kimchi jjim (white kimchi stew) coupon they sneak to the next table and thought it was so cute lol. Decided to go there after digging through photos! We planned to have a drink too, and when I went to say hi to my aunt she said she hadn't eaten yet, so it suddenly turned into a full family dinner~~~ lolol. So this is my review after eating my way through a ton of Godansu's meat until I was stuffed. I went a few days ago so this should still be a fresh, accurate account.

Why Godansu Changwon Yongho Branch works for a family dinner

  • The hangjeongsal (pork jowl) and samgyeopsal (pork belly) are highly recommended
  • Staff grill the meat for you
  • The bibim-myeon and mool naengmyeon for dessert aren't just palate cleansers — they're actual dishes, just good
  • The owner and all the staff were so kind! The owner apparently used to do Japanese cuisine, which explains the composed, plated dishes
  • The vibe feels upscale, the tables are wide, and there's a private room — great for a group dinner

Ah, the sauces were so, so good! There was one with basil and this red one — that one was so good that wasabi didn't even cross my mind until much later haha!

The basement entrance and the aging fridges at Godansu

Godansu Changwon Yongho Branch is in the basement of a building on Chang-i-daero 464beon-gil. Heading down the stairs to the basement — it might be a bit tricky to find since it's underground, but the vibe is instantly hot the moment you step in.

Right as you go down, there are three fridges full of vacuum-packed meat aging away. That's exactly why the meat tasted so good.

Tables and seating at Godansu: good for a group dinner?

There are also tables fixed against one wall, which you can't pull out, so it's sort of inconvenient and sort of not. But since the tables are big, it was way better than feeling cramped, and when the sauces were out of reach we asked for an extra set and they kindly brought everything over!! The interior had little decorative objects, there were blankets, and even a baby air chair!

Since I'd called ahead, they had a reserved seat ready for us, with individual bowls already set out. That salt was apparently blended three ways with salt, and my aunt said the salt was the tastiest, though she ended up enjoying the sauces plenty too haha.

Godansu's grill, cooked tableside by the staff

The Godansu-style grill plate was love at first sight — it looked so cool. The charcoal was excellent too, and because the charcoal was good, the meat grilled up amazingly, the kind of visual that makes you swallow just looking at it. If I grilled it myself I might burn it, but since the staff grill everything for you, the meat kept its juices in — chewy, juicy, even after being on the grill a while!! Order ahead so the meat supply doesn't run out while you're eating.

Five sauces plus complimentary steamed egg and baek-kimchi jjim

Five sauces to go with the meat, plus mustard leaf kimchi, baek-kimchi pickles, and even the garlic was big whole cloves, which I loved! Complimentary, super soft steamed egg and baek-kimchi jjim also came out.

The baek-kimchi jjim had no chili powder but still had that spicy kimchi-stew flavor. The meat inside felt like the moist meat from a proper suyuk (boiled pork) set. We each had a bite and it was good, though not hearty enough to eat with rice as a full dessert course — but since it's free, definitely search up Godansu Changwon Yongho Branch and grab the coupon lol.

Five servings of pork jowl and pork belly, plus pork neck

Our first order — hangjeongsal (pork jowl) and samgyeopsal (pork belly)!! Five servings, and since the owner said the pork neck was good too, we ordered that later. But personally, I recommend the samgyeopsal and hangjeongsal lol. Double recommend for the hangjeongsal.

Couldn't skip a drink with Gon and my uncle~~~ Thanks for the meal, uncle haha

I like the thickness

Another nice thing — after grilling, they put the meat on a small brazier right in front of us so we could keep eating it warm, and all we had to do was pick it up~!

Just look at that color,,,, I usually only eat thin-cut meat, so having these thick, juice-filled cuts of pork was so good lol

That basil sauce and....that thing on top of the wasabi, incredible. It was so good I refilled it twice.

Adding pork neck and gabrisal, then choosing what to finish with

After eating, dessert options were baek-kimchi jjim / soft tofu doenjang stew / mool memil-myeon or mool naengmyeon? It was memil (buckwheat) noodles. Since we'd already had the kimchi jjim, we ended with the soft tofu doenjang stew, and that was also completely soft and silky.

We joked about finding the wasabi way too late lolol. Kept eating and taking photos, and later ordered pork neck too as an extra!! We kept adding garlic, and the grill was so good it all turned out golden-brown.

This round we ordered pork neck and gabrisal lol

We had the mool memil-myeon and bibim-myeon, and honestly the food could pass for something served at a Japanese restaurant lol. It came out beautifully plated, the broth was clean and refreshing, and it left your mouth feeling clean without needing vinegar or anything — such a satisfying finish!!

The soft tofu doenjang stew was so silky — the first time I'd ever had doenjang stew with soft tofu in it. It was good enough that I thought I should start adding soft tofu to my own doenjang stew from now on — a genuinely impressive way to end the meal.

Ah, this wasn't my own money — it was my uncle's money haha. If you're looking for good food in Yongho-dong, Changwon, I recommend Godansu BBQ!! There's a big private room so you can eat privately, and the atmosphere is great, making it a really good choice for a Yongho-dong, Changwon group dinner!!
