In short

Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch is a Korean restaurant in Dalseo, Daegu, serving wood-fired mackerel seasoned with fermented rice nuruk salt. I enjoyed the fish with plentiful side dishes, warm soup, a hot-pot-style dish, scorched rice, and after-meal drinks. Verdict: a hearty choice for a family meal with parents.

Why is the nuruk-salt wood-fired mackerel called Geumdeungeo?

The video by the elevator even explains how they make the nuruk recipe. Why did the mackerel become “golden mackerel”? The essential salt!! It is nuruk salt fermented with rice nuruk (a traditional fermentation starter), which is why it became Geumdeungeo. (I thought it was called that because it was expensive… like the old “gold cabbage” joke… haha.)

Even from the entrance, everything is decorated so nicely that it makes a great photo zone. We were shown to our table and ate first; we had to come back here again a little later~ haha.

Family dining area at Geumdeungeo

These days, when eating out, there are times when I crave a proper meal of warm rice, grilled fish, and a bowl of soup more than strongly seasoned food. This time, I visited Geumdeungeo, a nice place near Wolseong-dong for a family meal.

First, the table was set, and there was quite a variety of side dishes. From seasoned zucchini and kimchi to dressed vegetables, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), eggplant, namul (seasoned vegetables), and salad, it was fun picking at each one.

The texture of nuruk-salt wood-fired mackerel

Nuruk-salt wood-fired mackerel main dish

This place centers on nuruk-salt wood-fired mackerel, but rather than feeling like a grilled-fish restaurant that serves only mackerel, it comes with a range of side dishes and warm soup. I think it would suit anyone looking for a Korean set meal restaurant in Wolseong-dong.

It looked properly delicious from the golden-brown grilling alone. The skin was lightly crisp and nutty, while the flesh stayed moist. It was tasty on its own, but dipping it lightly in salt as in the photo made the clean mackerel flavor stand out even more!

Warm soup with green vegetables

The soup was generously filled with large green vegetables, so it tasted refreshing yet deeply savory. A spoonful between bites of grilled fish clears the palate. It was not aggressively spicy or salty—just a comforting broth that made me keep reaching for another spoonful.

Another dish was hot-pot style, generously filled with meat, mushrooms, and green onions. As it bubbled away, the meat juices and the vegetables’ sweetness seeped into the broth, making it more savory. Have a piece of mackerel, some namul, a spoonful of broth, then more rice, and before you know it, a whole bowl of rice disappears.

At the end, you can make sungnyung (scorched-rice tea) like this, too.

After the meal, you can also have a cup of sikhye (sweet rice drink), maesil tea, or coffee. With parking in the building as well, it was a solid choice for a family outing.

The kids quickly finished their meals, and there was also a coin-operated game set up by the entrance,

plus a “hit 7 seconds” event and various other activities. If you get it right, there is a gift, too. haha.

A place to consider when you want a restaurant in Wolseong-dong to take your parents, a Wolseong-dong meal with good side dishes, or a satisfying grilled fish meal. If you like mackerel, you should definitely try the mackerel browned in the wood-fired oven. With warm soup and generous side dishes alongside it, this was a meal that left me feeling full right through—Geumdeungeo, a Korean set meal restaurant in Wolseong-dong.
