If you are looking for somewhere to step away from busy daily life and truly relax, may I recommend a place where you can enjoy a special atmosphere in this city of diverse food? Today’s place is Supbul Makchang (숲불막창), a well-known restaurant in Bonri-dong, Daegu, praised for its uniquely nostalgic atmosphere and excellent food. Branded around the concept of a grandmother’s countryside mountain home from the 1980s and ’90s, it was a space that perfectly captured the warm hometown memories and feeling of gathering around to eat together as children.

What is the grandmother’s mountain-house patio atmosphere like?

The bamboo-grove outdoor patio and grandmother’s mountain-house-style interior that greet you upon entering offer a coziness that is hard to find in the city. Older guests may be reminded of their hometown long ago, while younger diners get an unusual retro mood. On a cool or rainy day, grilling meat over oak charcoal on the patio makes for a truly romantic meal.

Parking and visit tip: There are three parking spaces in front of the restaurant. If they are full, free valet parking is available at the connected Galbi Dungji parking lot. Follow the road toward the green gate and you will find it easily.

We chose the better-value set menu. It came with “2 servings of makchang + 1 serving of galmaegisal + 1 serving of pork neck + Cheongdo Hanjae minari.” At ₩53,000, the price felt reasonable too.

How were the Iberico makchang and pork skirt meat?

True to its reputation as a real Daegu makchang restaurant, the meat we tried that day exceeded expectations. The subtle aroma of oak charcoal seeped deep into the meat, maximizing its nutty flavor with none of that off smell. The rich juices filling the mouth and chewy texture showed exactly why so many food lovers come here.

In particular, fresh gat kimchi (mustard-leaf kimchi), kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), and wrap vegetables prepared with ingredients from the forest and nature cleanly cut through the richness of the meat, so we enjoyed every last bite without getting tired of it.

Ah... the pre-grilled Iberico makchang came out so clean and delicious, without even a hint of odor. I loved it so, so much. My husband and I had a glass of soju together for the first time in a while.

You know, right? Makchang tastes even better when you dip it deeply in makjang (fermented soybean dipping sauce) loaded with scallions and Cheongyang chilies~!!! The soju went down so smoothly?!!!

The galmaegisal was delicious grilled golden and eaten with minari, and it was also good dipped in the mushroom mustard sauce. Personally, I preferred it with the mushroom mustard sauce. (My husband said he preferred the red sauce?^^;;)

The restroom is stocked with mouthwash supplies, toothpaste and toothbrushes, even hair ties. What thoughtful sense from the owner!!
