Solo lunch at a Chinese restaurant by Sinchon Station: Sammi

In short

Sammi Tantanmyeon Sinchon is a Chinese restaurant a short walk from Sinchon Station in Seodaemun, Seoul. On a repeat visit the writer ordered the pork and garlic scape rice bowl and mala kkanyang muchim (spicy cold tossed dish) with a bottle of soju, and the thick egg-drop-style soup that comes with the rice bowl turned out to be the hidden highlight. With plenty of solo diners in the room, Sammi Tantanmyeon Sinchon is an easy place to eat lunch alone.

Lately I keep craving Chinese food that's rich in umami but doesn't sit heavy on the stomach. So today I went back to a Sinchon lunch spot I fell completely in love with on my first visit: Sammi Tantanmyeon.

Where is Sammi Tantanmyeon Sinchon? A short walk from Sinchon Station

When I'm near Sinchon Station trying to figure out lunch, this is the first place that comes to mind. Sammi Tantanmyeon Sinchon is just a quick walk from the subway station. I fell for it on my first visit and have been coming back ever since.

The exterior has such an authentic feel that you can spot it from far away.

Main menu board placed at the entrance

The main menu board is set up right at the entrance, so you can check it out before even stepping inside. This place already has a strong word-of-mouth reputation among people hunting for Sinchon lunch spots and mala fans alike.

Step inside Sammi Tantanmyeon Sinchon and you're greeted by a clean yet exotic atmosphere. The seating is laid out efficiently, so it's never awkward to eat here alone — and it's just as great for coming with friends.

When I visited today, I saw a lot of people eating solo. It's a place where you can dine comfortably on your own, so I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a solo-dining-friendly spot in Sinchon.

Table with sauces and basic utensils neatly arranged

Each table has sauces and basic utensils neatly and hygienically arranged, and the staff greeted me warmly, so I felt comfortable from the moment I walked in.

Store menu board listing tantanmyeon and cooked dishes

Sammi Tantanmyeon offers a variety of dishes starting with their signature tantanmyeon (spicy sesame noodle soup). Both the rice dishes and the cooked dishes are reasonably priced, so it's satisfying in terms of value too.

Table setting with the ordered rice bowl, salad, and soju

This time I went with a combo that's easy on the stomach while still delivering plenty of umami. Pork garlic scape rice bowl and mala-style cucumber salad, ordered together!! It's a great setup for drinking too, so I added a bottle of soju as well.

How does the pork and garlic scape rice bowl taste? Mild, with a crunchy bite

The pork garlic scape rice bowl arrived first, piled generously onto a wide plate with rice and stir-fry — the visuals alone were enough to stir up my appetite. It's a dish that even people who can't handle spice can enjoy without worry.

Pork and garlic scape stir-fry soaked in special sauce

Instead of an artificial sweetness, it has a properly soaked-in special sauce that's slightly sweet with real depth of umami.

A spoonful of the rice bowl with garlic scapes and pork

The garlic scapes cut right through any greasiness you might otherwise feel, adding a crunchy texture on top. The more I chewed, the more I liked the combination of pork and garlic scapes.

The thick egg-drop-style soup that comes with the rice bowl

The broth that comes standard with the rice bowl is this restaurant's hidden gem. Instead of a typical clear soy-based broth, it's thickened with starch and served in a soft, egg-drop-soup style, Chinese-restaurant style.

Is mala kkanyang muchim a good match for soju?

The mala-style cucumber salad has that distinctive tingling mala aroma that pleasantly hits your nose.

The seasoning isn't just on the surface — it soaks all the way through, so the spicy-sweet flavor spreads more with every bite. Between the distinctive chewiness and the addictive mala seasoning, there's nothing better to pair with a drink.

A sip of soju, then a bite of the cucumber salad 👍 👍

This was a repeat order, but it tasted even better today! I figured I'd have leftovers for sure, but I ended up slowly finishing every last bite.

Final verdict on Sammi Tantanmyeon Sinchon

From the meal to the drinks, Sammi Tantanmyeon delivered another delicious visit as my go-to Sinchon lunch spot. Every dish is well-executed, and both the portions and flavors are great for the price. It has such a comfortable atmosphere for solo dining that I'd recommend it without hesitation to anyone looking for a solo-friendly Sinchon spot or just a good lunch place.

Next time I'll be back soon to work through the signature tantanmyeon and try a different dish combo!
