Post-work dinner for two at a Gwacheon seaweed soup restaurant: Haenon
In short
Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch is a Korean restaurant on Araetbaeraengi-ro in Munwon-dong, Gwacheon, Gyeonggi, specialising in miyeokguk (seaweed soup) set meals. A couple arrived at 7pm on a weekday and ordered the signature boneless flounder seaweed soup (19,000 won) and the beef seaweed soup (20,000 won), each served with ten banchan and tot seaweed rice. What is Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch like inside?
Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch (해논미역 과천직영점) is a seaweed soup set meal specialist on the 1st floor at 67 Araetbaeraengi-ro, Munwon-dong, Gwacheon. My husband and I visited around 7pm on a weekday, and it was peaceful and unhurried — really nice.

This is the seaweed soup place we'd walked past after visiting a nearby art museum, at an awkward time, never actually going in.

After work, my husband and I finally went in.
The container-style exterior already looked distinctive, and the moment we stepped inside, an open space with a high ceiling unfolded in front of us.

Calm lighting, generously spaced tables, and quiet music playing in the background — I loved all of it. Refined yet relaxed, that kind of style.

It felt like a space where a busy day could be soothed away with one spoonful of seaweed soup. The atmosphere would fit right in for family gatherings, birthdays, or anniversaries too.

The parking lot is a spacious open area right in front of the store, so it was very convenient to drive there. If it's full, staff will direct you where to go.
How do you order at Haenon Miyeok?
Haenon Miyeok's seaweed soup set meals start at 19,000 won. As the original health-food seaweed soup set meal specialist that began in Busan in 2015, the menu lineup is well put together.

My husband and I each ordered the house signatures: flounder seaweed soup and beef seaweed soup.
How good are the ten banchan at Haenon Miyeok?
Haenon Miyeok's set meal comes with ten banchan (side dishes), seven of which can be refilled at the self-serve bar. After a short wait, the banchan arrived first, neatly arranged.

Sweet and sour eggplant tangsuyuk, yeolmu (young radish) kimchi, mung bean jelly, gungchae, red-shelled scallop namul, napa cabbage kimchi, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), chicken breast namul, grilled flounder, and cabbage salad.

Ten banchan come out in total, and seven of them can be refilled at the self-serve bar.

The sweet-and-sour eggplant tangsuyuk really wakes up the appetite,

and the red-shelled scallop namul was refreshing with a nice crunch.

The japchae tasted exactly like the familiar, delicious japchae we all know.

The chicken breast namul was tangy — at first I thought it was baek-kimchi (white kimchi), but it turned out completely different, which surprised me.
The grilled flounder was crispy with a sweet glaze that paired really well with the seaweed soup, and the cabbage salad was so crisp and fresh that my chopsticks kept going back for more.
The rice comes as tot (seaweed) rice, and eating it with the seaweed soup made the whole meal feel wholesomely balanced.
As the sign on the wall says, the seaweed soup isn't pre-made and ladled out — each bowl is simmered to order, like brewing a tonic. Seeing it arrive bubbling in its own stone pot raised my expectations right away.

Is the boneless flounder seaweed soup fishy?
I was a little worried the fish seaweed soup might taste fishy, but not at all — there was a subtle, nutty perilla aroma, and the flounder flesh had broken down soft and flaky, so my spoon kept going in on its own.
The broth had just the right balance of clean and salty, and the seaweed still had a crisp, firm texture.
What was the beef seaweed soup broth like?
The beef seaweed soup was different from the color of the broth alone.

The broth had been simmered rich and long, with plenty of beef in it, so one spoonful filled my mouth with a deep, rich flavor.

Comparing the two, the flounder soup had a nutty, clean charm, while the beef soup had a heavy, deep character — each with its own distinct personality. The portions were huge, so even after eating heartily we had leftovers. Banchan can't be packed to go, but the soup can.

You can bring your own container, or buy one on-site for 1,000 won.
Seaweed soup — something I've loved since childhood but crave even more as I get older. Here at Haenon Miyeok, one spoonful and the fatigue of the day just melted away, like being comforted.
If you're looking for a Korean restaurant in Gwacheon or a good seaweed soup spot in Gwacheon, this is a solid recommendation for a family gathering spot in Munwon-dong, Gwacheon.

There's a free abalone event and a receipt review event running, so if you qualify, feel free to join in.
