Sinwolseong, Daegu galbi restaurant with self-serve wrap bar: Baeksanu

In short

Baeksanu Sutbul Wolsong Main Branch is a charcoal-grilled marinated pork galbi restaurant in Wolseong-dong (Sinwolseong), Dalseo, Daegu. Visiting with family, the writer ordered jinjja dwaeji galbi (marinated pork galbi) 1kg and a Korean beef doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), and the ribs arrived already pre-grilled, so they only needed a short finish over the charcoal at the table. Between the self-serve bar of wrap vegetables and side dishes and the playroom for children, Baeksanu Sutbul Wolsong Main Branch is an easy pick for a family dinner in Wolseong-dong.

I went to Baeksanu Sutbul Wolseong Main Branch in Wolseong-dong, Daegu to have some meat with my family. It's a place where you can grill sweet, well-seasoned pork galbi (marinated pork ribs) over charcoal. The portions were generous, so it looked like a good spot for a family meal or a get-together with several people.

Inside Baeksanu Sutbul Wolsong Main Branch and its self-serve bar

The tables inside Baeksanu Sutbul Wolseong Main Branch felt fairly spaced out. It had the lively energy you'd expect from a Korean BBQ restaurant, but was still comfortable for a family meal.

Each table had a grill plate ready for cooking meat, and you could grab extra side dishes from the self-bar as needed. There was lettuce and perilla leaves for wrapping the meat, along with garlic, chili peppers, kimchi and several other side dishes.

It was convenient being able to try the side dishes first and then only take more of the ones that suited my taste.

A generous plate of wrap vegetables

I also liked that you could grab plenty of wrap vegetables without feeling self-conscious about it. When you're eating meat, it's easy to run low on things like vegetables or onions, but the self-bar meant the flow never got interrupted.

Does Baeksanu Sutbul Wolsong Main Branch have a playroom for kids?

Baeksanu Sutbul Wolseong Main Branch also has a playroom for kids to use. It's set up so you can see the whole playroom at a glance, which made it easy to check in on the kids while they played.

For anyone who considers a playroom an important factor when picking a place for a family meal, this was a welcome space. You can enjoy plenty of pork galbi while the kids have a fun time, so I'd recommend it as a family dining spot in Wolseong-dong for anyone visiting with kids.

Marinated pork galbi 1kg, served after 15 minutes of pre-grilling

After a short wait, the pre-grilled jinjja dwaeji galbi (real pork galbi) arrived.

The pre-grilled galbi takes about 15 minutes to prepare, but the wait at the table was shorter than it would be if you started grilling raw meat from scratch, which was nice.

Once it's on the grill plate, you just need to cook it a little more until it's ready to eat.

Above all, the amount of pork galbi piled onto the grill plate was really generous.

A hearty table spread of 1kg worth of pork galbi

True to being a 1kg menu item, it looked plenty for several people to share, and the table filled up quickly. As the meat started cooking over the charcoal, the marinade and charcoal aroma rose together and really got my appetite going.

Marinated galbi can burn easily, so it's best to flip it often once one side is done.

Marinated galbi cut into bite-sized pieces

Cut into bite-sized pieces and grilled evenly, the surface developed an appetizing browned color.

The lean meat part was tender with the marinade soaked in all the way through, and the fatty edges were chewy and savory.

What the sweet-and-salty marinade tastes like over charcoal

The jinjja dwaeji galbi at Baeksanu Sutbul Wolseong Main Branch had that familiar sweet and salty flavor that keeps you reaching for more.

It wasn't just the marinade flavor that stood out — the subtle smoky aroma from the charcoal grilling added even more to the taste.

Eating it right away while warm, the juices and marinade blended together so well that it was good to eat even without rice.

It's delicious on its own, but wrapping the galbi in lettuce with garlic and ssamjang (thick dipping sauce) made it even more satisfying.

The fresh vegetables cleanly cut through the sweetness of the marinated galbi. It also went well with onion. Pairing the meat with vegetables and side dishes in between bites meant I never got tired of it, even by the end.

Korean beef doenjang jjigae that paired well with the pork galbi

Eating just meat felt like it wasn't quite enough, so I also ordered the Korean beef doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). It arrived bubbling in a stone pot, looking warm and hearty just from the sight of it.

With a rich broth and plenty of ingredients, it was good to spoon up a bite or two between rounds of meat. After the sweet marinated galbi, the savory doenjang jjigae felt like it cleared the palate. Charcoal-grilled meat and doenjang jjigae really is a combination that's hard to get wrong.
