Crab soft tofu stew at Sugisogeum, a Korean pub in Dalseo, Daegu

In short

Sugisogeum Keimyung University branch is a Korean pub (hansik jujeom) on Seodang-ro 7-gil in Dalseo, Daegu, near Keimyung University. On a Sunday evening the writer and her boyfriend walked straight in with no wait and ordered sugi dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken) for 25,000 won, gejang sundubu (crab soft tofu stew) for 15,000 won, and sugi-bap (rice set) for 12,000 won. The spicy, rich broth of the gejang sundubu at Sugisogeum was the dish worth coming back for.

I'd been to Sugisogeum in Gyodong so many times before — it's always got a wait there! So when I heard a "Sugisogeum" branch opened near Keimyung University, my boyfriend and I ran straight over haha!

They've got a huge variety of Korean-style bar snacks and plenty of hearty, meal-like dishes too, so let me introduce Sugisogeum, a Seongseo Keimyung University restaurant and bar!

We visited on a Sunday evening on the weekend, and there was no wait at all.

Soft lighting paired with warm wood tones gave the place a cozy, atmospheric Korean pub feel!

Sugisogeum menu: signature dishes and new additions

Menu board at Sugisogeum Keimyung University branch

Sugisogeum really has such a wide range of Korean-style bar snacks. Besides the signature dishes — clear chicken hot pot, boneless dakdoritang, cold shabu shabu, and gejang soondubu — there seemed to be a lot of new items I'd never seen before! Ttaengcho gyeongyangsik tonkatsu (spicy Western-style pork cutlet), Sugisogeum pizza, cream cheese crackers, conch bingsu (shaved ice).

Signature menu or new menu — I really agonized over the decision haha. So what did I go with? I decided that since I couldn't finish everything today, I'd just have to come back again!

What we ordered at Sugisogeum and what it cost

  • Sugi dakdoritang: ₩25,000
  • Gejang soondubu: ₩15,000
  • Sugi-bap: ₩12,000
Basic side dish of tofu and kimchi
Tofu kimchi served in a neat dish

Tofu and kimchi came out as the basic side dish. Looking at that neatly plated tofu-kimchi, I wondered — was this foreshadowing all the tofu to come? Haha. Sugisogeum actually has quite a few dishes that include tofu.

My top pick: gejang sundubu, the crab soft tofu stew

The gejang soondubu (crab jeotgal soft tofu stew) is ₩15,000. Personally, I'm one of those people who thinks gejang soondubu is Sugisogeum's real signature dish... (bold statement). Can't quite guess the flavor, can you?

When the crab jeotgal flavor is rich and deep it can get heavy, but here the savory, deep crab flavor mixed with the spicy broth actually settles your stomach — wow!!! I honestly kept spooning it up, and part of me wanted to just chug the whole stone pot...

Scooping up the soft tofu and vegetables together, my spoon kept going back for more. I really wanted to order a bowl of rice and mix it all together, but I held back since we'd already ordered the sugi-bap...

What exactly is sugi-bap?

Sugi-bap rice roll set with perilla leaves

The hearty, meal-like sugi-bap is ₩12,000. It's rice seasoned with soy sauce and sesame oil, rolled up in seaweed with fragrant perilla leaves — delicious on its own already.

But eating it topped with braised tofu and a spicy dadaegi sauce is an incredible combination! There looked to be about a whole block of tofu in there — I managed to fill up completely on just the sugi-bap.

Pouring the gejang soondubu broth over it and eating them together is also a great match!

Boneless dakdoritang and fried glass-noodle bites

A pot of Sugisogeum's boneless dakdoritang

Sugi dakdoritang is ₩25,000. The boneless dakdoritang has a sweet-and-spicy, rich broth with that seasoning flavor that makes you want fried rice afterward.

Glass noodle fritters on top of the dakdoritang

There was plenty of tender chicken thigh meat, along with a generous amount of potato, green onion, and onion.

The most special part was the fried glass noodle (bunmoja) fritters on top! Crispy outside, chewy inside — soaked in the dakdoritang broth, they're truly a special treat. You really have to try dunking these in the broth haha.

We ate a bite of gejang soondubu, a bite of sugi-bap, a bite of dakdoritang, on infinite rotation like a Dormammu loop haha. My boyfriend's top pick was the boneless dakdoritang, mine was the gejang soondubu! The sugi-bap was a pick for both of us!

Who is Sugisogeum Keimyung University branch best for?

If you're looking for a hearty, distinctive Korean-style bar near Seongseo Keimyung University, try visiting Sugisogeum Keimyung University branch :) With their late operating hours, it seemed like a great spot for first round, second round, or a company dinner.

☘️ The honest one-line verdict on Sugisogeum

The combination of all three dishes was great, but the gejang soondubu — the kind that makes you crave rice with it — was the one that stuck with me most!
