Seasonal peach cake at a Shinsegae Gangnam dessert shop: Chef Cho
In short
Chef Cho is a fruit cake specialist in Sweet Park on the B1 floor of Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam in Seocho, Seoul. The peach berry cake, carried home in a cooler bag that holds for about 5 hours, had moist sponge and light cream, but the seasonal peach was short on sweetness and the strawberries leaned tart. Chef Cho nails the looks and the texture — the fruit was the letdown, so the signature Pistachio Forest is next on the list.

I visited Chef Cho, the shop in the middle of Sweet Park that always seems to have a line. It's known as one of the '4 Kings of Cake' from the TV show Life's Masters, and its colorful fruit cakes have caught my eye for a while now, so I'd been curious about this place.
Chef Cho is known for light, not-too-sweet cakes made with fresh fruit and organic flour. I actually tried the cake myself this time, and I want to leave an honest record of how I felt.

Even within Shinsegae Gangnam's Sweet Park, the cakes piled high with fruit caught my eye, so naturally my feet carried me there.
Why Chef Cho is called one of Korea's four great cake makers

Chef Cho is said to be the shop of Chef Jo Jeong-im, who has run the business for 23 years and made a name as a cake artisan. As a Korean Master Confectioner, the shop describes its philosophy as bringing out the natural flavor of ingredients through constant research, pursuing a harmony of varied textures, high-quality ganache, rich cream, and refreshing fruit.

The flagship store is in Mullae, and the branch I visited was the one in Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam. Looking around the display case, there was quite a variety — fruit-topped cakes, chocolate cakes, pistachio cakes, and more. Chef Cho's signature cake is apparently the Pistachio Forest, but since peaches were in season when I visited, I picked the peach berry cake instead. I personally love fruit cakes, so I was excited just from the visuals.
Cooler bag packing for a long drive home

Since I had a long drive ahead, I asked for the cake to be packed in a cooler bag. When I asked the staff, they explained that the cooler bag packaging keeps the cake fresh for up to about 5 hours.
The peach berry cake: gorgeous to look at

Opening the packaging, the visuals were definitely gorgeous. The thinly sliced peaches and strawberries on top were arranged in a colorful way, and even in photos, that flashy fruit-cake look really came through. I was curious how it would taste.
The bread itself was moist and soft. The cream wasn't overly heavy or sweet either, so overall it leaned light and easy to eat. That said, the peach berry cake I tried this time left me a bit disappointed in terms of flavor.
Honest peach berry cake review: how did it taste?

What disappointed me most was, as expected, the fruit itself. I'd had high hopes since peaches were in season, but the peach I ate had almost no sweetness or aroma — it felt flatter than I expected. The strawberries were also quite tart. Personally, the sourness felt too strong, so I ended up setting some strawberries aside rather than eating them as they were.
Before I looked into Chef Cho, I'd seen a lot of reviews praising the fruit, so it's possible the fruit condition on the cake I happened to pick this time was just off. Fruit flavor and sweetness can vary a lot depending on timing even within the same type, so I think it's best to take my peach berry cake experience as just one data point.
The bread was moist and soft, but these days there are so many places that make moist cakes well, so personally I didn't feel it stood out in any especially unique way. Also, if you're expecting a style where fruit is packed generously all the way through the inside, you might feel differently. The peach berry cake I had stood out for its pretty visual — thin fruit slices arranged nicely on top — but it wasn't a cake with a lot of fruit inside. So personally, it was a really pretty-looking fruit cake, but the fruit flavor itself was what I found most lacking this time.
Which Chef Cho cake to try next
That said, it feels a bit unfair to conclude Chef Cho fell short overall. I only tried one item, the peach berry cake, and cake satisfaction can vary a lot depending on the fruit's sweetness and condition. Above all, the cream wasn't overly sweet and the bread was moist, so overall it wasn't an overwhelmingly sweet cake.
Since it's a fruit-topped cake with pretty visuals, I think it's worth checking out at least once for a gift or a special-occasion cake. And if I visit again, I'd pick a different cake next time. In particular, I'm curious about the Pistachio Forest, said to be Chef Cho's signature. Since the fruit flavor was what disappointed me this time with the peach berry cake, next time I'd rather try a menu item that isn't so dependent on fruit quality.
In conclusion, the peach berry cake I tried this time had great visuals and a solid basic texture, but the fruit flavor personally left something to be desired. Since other reviews often praise the fruit, I'd like to visit again and try a different cake to experience another side of Chef Cho.
