Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil family restaurant with a high chair: Dongyang
In short
Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch is a Korean restaurant set in a hanok on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. Visiting with my mom and older brother, we ordered the jinmi yachae jjimdak (braised chicken with vegetables, medium) for 28,000 won with gondre rice, egg rice and pollack roe rice, and the shoes-on seating plus a high chair made the meal easy even with a baby along. Dongyang Baekban is worth recommending when you need a hearty Korean meal on Hwangridan-gil.

What the hanok dining room feels like

Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch, a Korean food favorite located on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju — even from outside, you can see the tiled roof and wooden signboard, and it really fits the surrounding scenery.

The inside also felt less like a space forcing a trendy vibe and more like they kept the feel of an old hanok! Wood-toned tables and chairs, and green hanok scenery through the windows — it really put me in a Gyeongju state of mind haha. There are plenty of pretty cafés or Western restaurants on Hwangridan-gil, but I think it's nice to have at least one meal in a hanok eating warm Korean food while traveling.
Shoes-on table seating and a high chair for babies
Dongyang Baekban Gyeongju Hwangridan-gil Main Branch has shoes-on interior seating! Not floor seating, so it's comfortable haha. There's a baby chair too, so it's a restaurant I can recommend to families with a baby. In fact, there was a family with a baby seated right next to our table haha. The owner was also super kind — recommended as a good spot for a family meal on Hwangridan-gil!
Menu and prices at Dongyang Baekban

The menu at Dongyang Baekban, a Korean food favorite on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju ‼️ Looking at the menu, there's everything from chicken dishes to jjimdak (braised chicken) to duruchigi (stir-fried meat), good options to share among a group. There's also special dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken), jinmi yachae jjimdak, pork kimchi duruchigi, and Korean beef tripe hot pot. There are set menus too, with a main dish paired with rice and perilla-oil-roasted seaweed, so it looked good for picking a variety when visiting with a group!
The variety of rice options was fun too haha — from caviar egg rice to pollack roe rice, roe rice, hot pepper rice, gamtae (seaweed) rice, yukhoe (beef tartare) rice, to gondre (dried aster greens) rice, so you can pair whatever suits your taste with the main dish. If you're looking for a Korean restaurant on Hwangridan-gil that a group can enjoy together, the menu selection is pretty wide!
<Our order>
- ✔️ Jinmi Yachae Jjimdak (medium) ₩28,000
- ✔️ Pollack roe rice ₩5,500
- ✔️ Gondre rice ₩6,000
- ✔️ Egg rice ₩3,500

The side dishes came out quickly 🥄

The gondre rice I ordered, the egg rice mom ordered, and the pollack roe rice my brother ordered came out one after another!

How was the jinmi yachae jjimdak (medium) for 28,000 won?
And then Dongyang Baekban's jinmi yachae jjimdak arrived! A big pot packed with chicken, rice cakes, onion, carrot, and all kinds of vegetables. Even in the photo you can tell the sauce is properly soaked in .. 💗 There was plenty of broth too, so simmering it while eating made it even tastier.
Even though it's jjimdak rather than dakbokkeumtang, there's a bit of broth, so the vegetables and glass noodles don't get cold, and you can mix it into your rice too — so good ㅠㅠㅠ Plus it wasn't just packed with chicken — there was a good variety of rice cakes and vegetables too, so it was fun picking through it piece by piece haha.

Most of all, when you're traveling and keep eating bread or desserts or snacks, there's a moment where you're like, "okay... I need an actual meal now" haha. That's exactly when a spicy, hot dakbokkeumtang with rice hits the spot — it really felt like a proper meal! A good dish to have with parents or with a group of friends while traveling in Gyeongju 💗

Sprinkle gim (seaweed) flakes over the gondre rice, top it with jjimdak, and it's honestly the best combo ... 💗
