Jeonju Hanok Village skewer stall with mild mala octopus: Munkkocchi

In short

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong Jeonju Hanok Village Branch is a grill-to-order octopus and chicken skewer stall on Eunhaeng-ro, right in the middle of Jeonju Hanok Village. With the writer's in-laws, the family ordered a cheese chicken skewer (₩6,000), teriyaki chicken skewer (₩5,000), mala octopus skewer (₩5,500), katsuobushi octopus skewer (₩5,000) and a slushy (₩3,000), and ate at the tables beside the shop; the mala octopus was only about level two on a mala tang spice scale. Because Munkkocchi grills each skewer after the kiosk order, the octopus came out tender with no chewiness or fishy smell.

Octopus and chicken skewers from Munkkocchi Mungangjeong in Jeonju Hanok Village

Octopus and chicken skewers I grabbed as a snack while touring Jeonju Hanok Village with my in-laws!! There were plenty of other octopus skewer stalls around, but somehow the ones grilled personally by the owner at Munkkocchi Mungangjeong just looked more delicious haha. And it was so convenient that the shop has its own table right next door where we could all sit down and eat together haha.

Munkkocchi Jeonju Hanok Village: hours and location on Eunhaeng-ro

Where Munkkocchi sits in Hanok Village, by day and by night

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong's location right at the center of Hanok Village

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong sits right in the middle of Hanok Village — literally dead center — as a proper Jeonju Hanok Village street food stall haha.

By day it has this bright hanok tiled-roof exterior,

and at night the lighting gives it a bit of a street-cart vibe?! Buying an octopus skewer, a chicken skewer, and a slushy or beer they also sell, then sitting at the table right next door to eat — that's got to be even more atmospheric and tastier, right?!?! haha. I think it's little touches and details like this that made this place a signature Jeonju Hanok Village street food spot.

I already knew about this place through Superchart and came on purpose, but honestly, if you're just wandering Hanok Village looking at the hanoks and this chicken skewer and octopus, looking this good, is staring right at you, could you resist?!

I don't think I could hold out, I'd just walk right in lol. And the prices are pretty reasonable for a tourist-area food stall, plus they've got beer and sikhye to cool off with?!

And on top of that, slushies too?!?!?!!?? There's just no way I'm walking past this place lolol.

Four skewers and a slushy, five minutes after the kiosk order

Order on the kiosk and the owner starts cooking right away~ (You absolutely must not go to another stall — you have to go to the handsome, cool-looking owner in the photo who does the grilling.)

haha After about a 5-minute wait, the skewers were ready! We got

  • Cheese chicken skewer – ₩6,000
  • Teriyaki chicken skewer – ₩5,000
  • Mala octopus skewer – ₩5,500
  • Katsuobushi octopus skewer – ₩5,000
  • Slushy – ₩3,000

That's what we bought!

Four kinds of skewers and a cup of slushy

After eating the spicy skewers, that cold slushy was irresistible,,

And of course we sat right at the table next door to eat,

Teriyaki chicken skewer with charred flavor

How spicy is the mala octopus skewer, and how is the cheese chicken?

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong's mala octopus skewer wasn't super intense mala flavor — more like a level-two mala tang spiciness — and out of all four, my personal number one was the cheese chicken skewer. The owner thoughtfully gave us skewer picks, so it was easy to pick off the chicken and octopus separately, piece by piece haha.

Mala octopus, katsuobushi octopus, teriyaki chicken, cheese chicken. My personal favorite skewer, hands down, was the cheese chicken skewer!!!!! Tender, soft chicken plus the salty punch of cheese — genuinely can't miss!! I really should've had it with a beer, but I couldn't be caught drinking in front of my mother-in-law in broad daylight, so I held back,,

And the mala octopus skewer was surprisingly tasty too! Not super intense mala flavor — more like a level-two mala tang intensity haha. Even people who don't usually enjoy mala tang could probably eat this comfortably!

The teriyaki chicken skewer also had that mellow charred flavor I usually love in chicken skewers, so that was great, and the katsuobushi octopus skewer had chewy octopus with a real hit of that distinctive katsuobushi umami!! Genuinely delicious!! Maybe because it was an hour or two after lunch, but even my foodie mother-in-law seemed to enjoy it — she said we should get more later lolol.

What grilling to order does for Munkkocchi's octopus

It really made a difference that these aren't pre-cooked skewers just reheated and handed over — the owner starts grilling over the fire only once you order on the kiosk, so there was zero toughness, off smell, or hardness, just fresh and tender texture. Honestly, it was almost too good a quality to believe for Jeonju Hanok Village street food — a snack I'd absolutely get again next time I'm in Jeonju haha.
