Goyang Korean restaurant for brass-bowl gomtang: Doonjeong
In short
Doonjeong is a Korean restaurant in Hyangdong, Goyang, Gyeonggi, serving Korean beef gomtang and yukhoe bibimbap. We ordered spicy tripe gomtang, clear Korean beef gomtang with broth-soaked rice, and Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap for 18,000, 13,000, and 16,000 won. Verdict: a deeply satisfying meal worth returning for on a chilly day.

When I’m craving a hearty bowl of gukbap (rice soup) that warms me right through, I visited a place where you can taste the true excellence of properly simmered Korean beef broth.

Located in Goyang’s Hyangdong district in Gyeonggi Province, this restaurant has such exceptional quality that I want to call it a true pilgrimage site for Korean beef gomtang.

This is Doonjeong (도온정), a standout Hyangdong restaurant that has proudly been listed in the Blue Ribbon Survey, Korea’s leading restaurant guide, for two consecutive years—proof of the depth of its flavors.

Where can I park at Doonjeong?
For those visiting by car, there is no dedicated parking directly in front of the restaurant. Instead, use Hyangdong 1st Public Parking Lot, a five-minute walk away.

It is so close that you only need to cross one crosswalk, so parking the car and walking over is no trouble at all.

Once inside, the elegant, refined atmosphere immediately catches your eye, completely overturning the usual image of a gukbap place. Thanks to the calm and neat layout, even with a steaming bowl of soup, you can slow down, savor every bite, and feel properly looked after.
Menu and the soju jja-baegi drinks lineup
The menu lineup and the appealing soju jja-baegi drinks selection

Looking over the menu, the signature basic Korean beef gomtang starts at a reasonable ₩13,000. We ordered three representative dishes: the pleasantly spicy tripe gomtang for ₩18,000, the clean-tasting regular clear Korean beef gomtang for ₩13,000, and fresh Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap for ₩16,000.

The drinks selection was also impressively varied. It ranged from precious medicinal rice wine and refined rice wine to traditional makgeolli, standard alcoholic drinks, and soft drinks. What especially caught my eye was their soju jja-baegi: soju served with cool ice cubes floating in it. I thought it would pair wonderfully with the clean, rich gomtang broth.

The kimchi and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) we sampled before the main meal arrived were fantastically finished—enough to make you gasp. They were wonderfully crisp, with their refreshing natural fizz popping across the mouth, immediately passing the test for the fundamentals of a gukbap restaurant.
Three main dishes served in brass bowls
The delight of a neat brass-bowl setting and three main dishes
The three dishes we ordered arrived quickly and were set neatly on the table. Served beautifully in brass bowls with a subtle elegance, they delivered visual satisfaction from the very start.

A generous spicy tripe gomtang with no off smell
With the first spoonful of spicy tripe gomtang, I became convinced this place would make an amazing gopchang jeongol (beef intestine hot pot), too. The deep, rich broth had not even a trace of off smell, while tender tripe and chewy beef intestines filled the bowl almost to overflowing. I was seriously satisfied.

Clear Korean beef gomtang with broth-soaked rice, great for kids
The clear Korean beef gomtang was exactly my kind of dish. It would be perfect for children to finish a whole bowl of rice, too. The rice came moist from being warmed in the broth, and it was generously filled with tender Korean beef. In this era of high prices, I thought that if I am spending money in the ₩10,000 range, this is exactly the kind of food it should go toward.

Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap paired with minari
The Korean beef yukhoe bibimbap, loaded with minari (water celery), was also topped with a mountain-like heap of high-quality bright-red raw Korean beef. Every spoonful after mixing brought together fragrant freshness and a pleasantly chewy texture, making it such a joy to eat.

Even my wife, who does not usually seek out gukbap, said she wanted to become a regular here. She could not praise it enough, saying we absolutely have to come back whenever it rains or the weather turns chilly.

This was a restaurant that made me certain that, if I am going to spend money, I should happily spend it somewhere this full of care. It is also very close to the large IKEA Goyang store, so I think I will stop by often before or after furniture shopping.
If you want to try gomtang made with deep expertise and a neat Korean meal spread, I strongly recommend visiting Doonjeong, a Blue Ribbon-selected restaurant and one of Hyangdong’s representative dining spots.
