The area around Gangnam Station is always packed and hectic, so eating a proper full spread solo can feel awkward — but this place has solo seating fully sorted out and great value too, so I came away really satisfied.

1992 Deopbap & Jjageuli Gangnam Main Branch stood out even from a distance with its impressive hanok tile-roof eaves. Under the sign it read 'the place where value for money ends,' which got my expectations up before I even walked in!

The moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by a stylish indoor garden and water wheel — hard to believe this was a restaurant in the middle of downtown.

With water trickling and mist rising, the atmosphere felt like stepping into a traditional hanok tavern or garden, and it put me at ease right away. Interior that foreign tourists would love too.

What are the solo seats like? Bar tables with NFC ordering

Inside, there was a row of 1-person bar tables lined up. This really is a solo-dining spot.

Each seat came with its own light and a wireless ordering tag (NFC), which immediately made me think this place is a holy grail for solo diners at Gangnam Station.

With a bus tray return spot, recycling bins, and disposable aprons all conveniently placed, the overall flow felt hygienic and well organized.

Ordering at the kiosk: menu and side dish choices

Ordering is done easily via the kiosk at the entrance. There's a wide range of rice bowls, jjageuli (Korean stew), and hearty set meals.

We ordered the signature 'meat-packed jjageuli' (₩13,500) and, for the meat lovers among us, the '1-person meat set.' On the kiosk, you can choose or remove side dishes to go with your jjageuli (dried radish, seasoned black beans, stir-fried kimchi, etc.), and rice comes standard as 'egg-blanket rice' topped with a fried egg. How did the food taste? An honest review of both dishes

After a short wait, the food arrived as a full spread on neat traditional brassware and ceramic dishes.

1. Meat-packed jjageuli (13,500 won)

This is the signature dish — a Chungcheong-style jjageuli (thick stew) reinterpreted in 1992's own way. It was generously loaded with thick pork, zucchini, onion, and tofu. Julienned green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds on top made it look mouthwatering right away.

I tried a spoonful of the broth first — it was spicy and rich with umami, no heaviness at all. The rice comes topped with a soft-boiled fried egg, and once I poured on plenty of the jjageuli ingredients and broth and sprinkled the seaweed flakes over it, it was seriously irresistible! No gamey meat smell at all, and the texture held up well — I scraped the bowl clean to the very last spoonful.

2. Solo meat set with egg-blanket rice

This is the best choice for when grilling meat alone feels like too much of a hassle.

In a brass bowl, golden-grilled pork belly came out fully stir-fried together with sausage, mushrooms, onion, shishito peppers, and green onion. This was served as a set with soft, generous steamed egg in a stone pot (optional), ssamjang dipping sauce, rice, and neat side dishes. There was a subtle grilled-meat aroma throughout, and dipping the sausage and grilled vegetables in ssamjang made it really filling. Since the meat comes already grilled rather than you having to cook it yourself, you can enjoy it cleanly without worrying about the smell sticking to your clothes — perfect for an office worker's lunch!

Final verdict: would I eat alone at 1992 Deopbap again?
