Scallop sashimi and live octopus at a Daeheung Station raw fish

In short

Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada is a raw fish restaurant that just opened near Daeheung Station, Mapo, Seoul. Three of us ordered the signature set and worked through abalone porridge, salt-grilled shrimp, raw shrimp sashimi, scallop sashimi, a seafood platter, tofu kimchi, live octopus and a spicy fish stew finish — the scallop sashimi was a first try and the sea cucumber and sea squirt had zero fishy taste, which really stood out. Plenty for a meal or a round of drinks, and a solid pick for a family gathering or work dinner.

My husband and I hadn't had good seafood in a while, so when a friend told us about a newly opened raw fish restaurant, we ran over half out of curiosity and half starving haha.

The tank, the vibe, and how kid-friendly it is

When we got there, being freshly opened, the place had that clean, brand-new feel from the outside.

I checked out the fish tank first, and it was so well maintained — the water was so clear you could see every single piece of seafood inside clearly.

Inside it was already crowded and buzzing even though it was opening day!!! And as expected of a new place, the bathroom was spotless and really easy to use, which I loved.

Clean, well-kept interior seating

There were also plenty of baby chairs, so it seemed like a great spot to bring kids too 💕💕 We sat down, debated what to order, and went with their signature set, the house special.

The signature set, served whole

Not long after we ordered, an incredible-looking spread started arriving at the table.

Instead of coming out one dish at a time, it's served as a whole table already set — and it was so generous my jaw actually dropped.

The table was packed edge to edge, and just looking at all the fresh seafood was half the fun before eating haha. Every staff member was so friendly too, which put me in a great mood before we even started.

Abalone porridge and steamed egg to start

Before diving into the main dishes, we started with warm abalone porridge to ease in. Even as the standard porridge, it had deep flavor from the abalone innards, and there was a good amount of abalone meat with a nice bite.

The soft steamed egg that came with it was savory too, perfect for settling the stomach between bites. Starting with something warm and gentle before the main seafood made everything that followed taste even better.

Salt-grilled shrimp needs 7–8 minutes

Next up, the moment we opened the lid on the salt-grilled shrimp, a savory-sweet aroma hit us right away. You grill the salt-grilled shrimp for about 7–8 minutes!! haha

I picked up a nicely browned shrimp, peeled it, and took a bite — the texture was pure springiness.

The more you chew, the more that sweet shrimp umami spreads through your mouth — it was so fresh I couldn't help but be impressed.

The raw shrimp sashimi was also unmistakably fresh, bouncy and sweet — really outstanding.

Fried shrimp heads served on the side

And they thoughtfully fried up the shrimp heads for us too — so thoughtful...♥️♥️

A plate of scallop sashimi, tried for the first time

Scallop sashimi for the first time, plus gizzard shad two ways

And most of all — I tried scallop sashimi for the very first time this time, and oh my goodness, I never knew scallop sashimi could taste this good!! Not the slightest bit fishy, just a refreshing, savory flavor that comes together beautifully in your mouth — I literally kept saying "amazing" out loud. I completely fell for the soft, sweet character of the scallop sashimi and kept popping pieces into my mouth without thinking.

The savory gizzard shad sashimi, which signals the start of autumn, and the nicely grilled gizzard shad were also a treat. The sashimi got more savory the more you chewed, and once you carefully picked the bones out of the grilled gizzard shad, the savory flavor filled your mouth.

The 4-kind mixed sashimi platter also came sliced thick and neat, letting us fully enjoy the chewy texture of live-fish sashimi.

The live-fish sashimi was really thick too ♥️♥️

Sea cucumber and sea squirt, no fishy taste, another first try

Owner, honestly this whole set is way too generous for the price. The seafood platter had abalone and a bunch of other seafood packed in, so we got a real taste of the sea.

Sea cucumber? Sea squirt? I don't usually eat these, but there was seriously no fishy taste at all!! It was so surprising!! So I gave it a first try!! haha 👍👍👍👍👍👍

Cold pork, tofu kimchi, and live octopus — the side dishes never stop

On top of that, the cold pork slices eaten with seasoned wild chervil were clean with no gamey taste, a nice change of pace amid all the seafood,

and the tofu kimchi, with the deep flavor of stir-fried kimchi, was a perfect drinking snack too.

And then live octopus too 👍👍👍 The drinking snacks really never end...haha. The owner must be a drinker too!! It's perfect as both a meal and a round of drinks ♥️♥️♥️

Table full of drinking snacks

I really need to quit drinking, but with snacks this generous and this good, there's no way I could skip the alcohol haha.

A cold glass of soju just went down perfectly with this spread.

How many people should come?

As we ate, I realized the overall portion was seriously huge. This amount would easily fill up 3 or 4 people. Since it's such a varied, generous spread, I think it's a great place to visit as a family or with any kind of group.

Finishing with a spicy fish stew loaded with shrimp

After happily working through all the seafood and side dishes, we ordered a spicy fish stew to finish things off.

The stew arrived bubbling away, and it was loaded with plump shrimp inside too. I tried a spoonful of the broth and it was so spicy and clean it completely cleared my head — perfect way to end the meal. That spicy broth made everything we'd eaten settle down nicely for a clean finish.

Overall, the quality of the fresh seafood, the generous portions, and the friendly service all left nothing to be desired — a really satisfying visit. Whenever I'm craving fresh seasonal seafood or want a generous spread to enjoy with a drink, I think I'll be back before long haha.

If you're looking for a great seafood spot near Daeheung Station, I'd definitely recommend stopping by Jaecheoldameun Mapo Bada!
