If you're looking for a fun dining spot in Magok for a special night, let me introduce Don Tamguso — often called a "pork omakase" restaurant. Pork omakase?! That was a new concept to me, but it turned out to be a course that unfolds pork in all kinds of different ways.

Curious what shows up on the menu at this dining-style restaurant? I followed the course from start to finish, all the way to dessert! Here's my full rundown of the Don Tamguso dinner course.

Casual interior of Don Tamguso restaurant

If you sit at the bar table, you can chat with the chef preparing your food while you eat.

Quiet evening bar seating at Don Tamguso

I visited a little after 7:30pm, and since the restaurant was fairly quiet at that time, I got to hear about the dishes and ask all kinds of questions comfortably.

Larger group tables inside Don Tamguso

There are also larger group tables toward the back of the restaurant, so it looks like a good spot not just for couples but for small groups too.

And here's another touching detail! When I sat down, my name had been handwritten on the card listing today's course 🥹 (I'm a total sucker for this kind of thing, haha). Little details like this made the meal feel a bit more special :)

Chestnut and mushroom cream soup at Don Tamguso

Chestnut and button mushroom cream soup

I loved the warm, smooth texture. The chestnut's subtle nuttiness and the mushroom's aroma blended together naturally!

Autumn fruit salad with persimmon vinegar foam

When it arrived, I was curious about the little bubbles sitting on top — turns out it's a dressing made into a foam using persimmon vinegar.

The sweetness of the autumn fruit plus the tartness of the persimmon vinegar made for a refreshing course that cleaned the palate.

Lasagna with a strong shiitake aroma

This lasagna has shiitake mushroom, mozzarella cheese, a white ragu, and a house-made smoky barbecue sauce.

The shiitake aroma really came through instead of getting buried under the sauce! The mushroom scent stayed center stage and lingered for quite a while.

Shio koji-aged grilled pork tenderloin

The texture was so soft it was hard to believe this was pork tenderloin. It's aged with koji salt, and the restaurant's own house-made truffle oil is added on top, giving it a really vivid aroma.

Oven-roasted pork belly with minari salad

Personally, this was the most memorable dish of the course! The thinly sliced pork belly paired with minari's fresh, sharp aroma, which cut through the richness completely.

The chef explained it was inspired by Peking cuisine, but somehow it also reminded me of Mexican food?! It was a strangely fascinating combination.

Main course: signature burger or risotto

For the main, you can choose between the signature burger and the risotto. We were curious so we ordered one of each and shared — honestly, after the tenderloin I was already worried whether I could finish everything, but the burger wasn't too big, so it was easy to cut in half and eat in a bite!

The risotto was impressive too, but what really stuck with me was the fried bangpungnamul (glehnia root herb) on top!

The batter was almost invisible, it was so thin, yet the texture stayed crispy. I wanted to eat it instead of chips, honestly 🥹

A light dessert finish with pavlova

Dessert apparently changes day to day, at the chef's own whim(?).

Tips before you book: parking and corkage

Visiting and ordering tips for Don Tamguso
  • If you're visiting as two, I'd suggest ordering the burger and risotto separately for the last main and sharing. The two are completely different in character, so it's fun to compare them side by side.
  • If a bar seat is available, I'd personally recommend it too.
  • If it's a birthday or anniversary, mention it in advance — there's a small lettering service, so keep that in mind.
  • If you're driving, you can use the building's parking lot, with 2 hours of parking support.
  • Corkage is ₩20,000 per bottle under 25% ABV, and ₩40,000 per bottle 25% ABV or above.
