If you're looking for a slightly special dinner in Magok, Don Tamguso is worth a look. It's on Magokjungang 6-ro near Magok Station, open 11:30 AM to 9:10 PM.

Hi, I'm Chugu, the running traveler.

When people hear 'omakase' they usually think of sushi or Korean beef first, so I was curious about Don Tamguso, a place where pork is the star of a full course.

This time I visited in the evening and took my time with the dinner course.

Does Don Tamguso feel like a dining room or a Korean BBQ house?
Walking into Don Tamguso, the atmosphere is clearly different from a typical Korean BBQ restaurant. Instead of grilling pork yourself, each ingredient and technique comes together into a finished dish, so the whole place feels closer to fine dining.

The bar seating in particular lets you watch the open kitchen while you eat, which made it feel well suited to a Magok date.

Since the food arrives course by course rather than all at once, it was easy to chat and enjoy a slow dinner. I thought this would be a great choice on a day when you want something a bit different from just grilling meat.
I made a reservation ahead of time.

What's fun about Don Tamguso is that pork isn't just grilled — it's turned into a course using a variety of ingredients and techniques.
Before each dish arrived, the plating was finished right in front of us.

It was interesting to see how many different styles of food could come from a single ingredient, pork. Starting light and building up to hearty meat dishes, then finishing with the meal courses, made following the sequence feel enjoyable.
Soup, salad and shiitake lasagna at Don Tamguso
The first starter was a chestnut and mushroom soup — clean and light.

A refreshing salad that whetted the appetite!
Even though it's a pork omakase, I liked that the early courses were built to wake up the palate.

This was a plate of finely diced dried persimmon and apple finished prosciutto-style.
And a lasagna made with shiitake mushroom, white ragout, and mozzarella cheese, finished with a smoky sauce!

So much care went into every plate.

The two mains: shio koji tenderloin and Sichuan pepper pork belly
The first main dish arrived — shio koji tenderloin with mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes.
Did they glaze those cherry tomatoes in honey? Why are they so sweet and delicious?

They said this tenderloin was finished after being cooked sous vide, and it was incredibly tender. It made me feel like they'd really nailed the searing too.

The second main was pork belly with minari (water dropwort), Sichuan pepper, cumin, and fennel.

We eat pork belly with minari a lot at home, so why did this taste so different? It left me genuinely puzzled while eating it.

Signature burger or Wando abalone barley risotto?
For the choice course, we ordered one signature burger and one risotto.

We cut it in half to share — it may not look like much, but this carrot, arugula, and jambon-based burger is seriously good.

This is a risotto based on Wando abalone, barley, and glasswort.

Both the risotto and the abalone were delicious.

The crispy fried glasswort texture was so good.

Today's dessert was a berry yogurt.
It cleanly rinsed the palate.
Why Don Tamguso works for a date dinner in Magok
On a date, the food matters, but so do atmosphere and pacing. Don Tamguso's course-by-course rhythm made it easy to chat naturally through the meal. Watching the food come together at the open kitchen was fun too, and even waiting for the next course became one of the pleasures of the date.
If you want to enjoy pork in a different way in Magok, Don Tamguso near Magok Station is worth a visit. The most fun part was how familiar pork was reimagined through varied techniques and a full course structure, and being able to savor each plate slowly made it a clearly different experience from an ordinary BBQ restaurant.
