Haeundae seafood restaurant with a Pick 2 set: Hyejane San Gomjangeo

In short

Hyejane San Gomjangeo Main Branch is a live hagfish (gomjangeo) restaurant in an alley off Gunam-ro near Haeundae Station in Busan. The small Pick 2 set costs 78,000 won, and choosing seasoned grilled hagfish and seafood stew came with complimentary live octopus, sea squirt and sea cucumber — enough to leave two people completely full. With palm-tree decor that makes the indoor room feel like a street-side tent, Hyejane San Gomjangeo made for a satisfying dinner on a Busan trip.

What Hyejane San Gomjangeo looks like on the Haeundae night streets

Hyejane San Gomjangeo Main Branch sits in an alley right next to Gunam-ro Square in Haeundae. Turning into the alley, you're greeted by a street bustling with people.

Among all the options, one place especially caught my eye — Hyejane San Gomjangeo Main Branch.

Even on a weekday evening, the place was packed both inside and out, buzzing with energy.

The moment I walked in, staff in Hawaiian pink T-shirts moving around in perfect coordination caught my eye 😉

The palm tree decorations and sparkling lights gave the indoor space an exotic feel, almost like eating at an outdoor street tent. It was the kind of space that gets a traveler's mood soaring.

On one side there's also a group room, which was nice since it means regular guests and group guests can be seated separately!

Which two dishes to choose from the Pick 2 set

Hyejane San Gomjangeo's signature menu is the 'Pick 2 Set.'

I heard that in Busan they show you the live seafood before cooking, and honestly I was too scared to see the bare face of the hagfish, so I ended up going with the seasoned version instead... For the other choice, I went with the seafood stew.

Basic side dishes including freshwater snails and silkworm pupae

For basic side dishes, they gave us a variety of snacky items like small freshwater snails and silkworm pupae, which were great for whetting the appetite.

What comes with the small 78,000-won set

Our ordered 'Pick 2 Set' arrived.

Table set with the Pick 2 Set of live hagfish and seafood stew

We picked two hefty dishes — live hagfish and seafood stew — and I was shocked by how huge the portions were for the price.

Pot of seafood stew with clams, shrimp and blue crab

The seafood stew was loaded with 3-4 kinds of shellfish like fan mussels and mussels, plus shrimp, octopus, and blue crab. Even for the small size, the generous, brimming amount of seafood was surprising.

I ordered the hagfish as a seasoned grill, and they showed it to us before cooking. Even seasoned, it was still wriggling around — I thought if I'd ordered the salt-grilled version instead, I would've really been shocked.

Complimentary plate of live octopus, sea squirt and sea cucumber

On top of the base set, they also gave us complimentary fresh live octopus, sea squirt, and sea cucumber, doubling the abundance.

The chewy suction cups of the live octopus had a taste that just clings to your mouth ><

How the chewy live hagfish and the seafood stew taste together

The seasoned live hagfish was finally fully grilled.

It has a chewier, more elastic texture than regular eel, with a nice crunchy bite.

The seasoning is spicy enough to make you keep reaching for a beer — quite addictive — and alternating with the stew to balance out the mild spiciness made it easy to keep eating, you know?

Seasoned live hagfish wrapped in perilla leaf

Wrapping it in perilla leaf added a fragrant note that made it even tastier.

The seafood stew brought together a variety of seafood for a cool, deep flavor,

'Stuffed to bursting' was exactly right for the two of us — a truly satisfying dinner!

From clams to blue crab to shrimp, really quite a variety, don't you think?

Restrooms, service sides and the welcome at Hyejane San Gomjangeo

At Hyejane San Gomjangeo, it wasn't just the food — you could feel thoughtful touches for visitors throughout the space!

The restroom in particular was decked out with elaborate floral decorations that made me instinctively pick up my camera. It was the perfect spot for an 'I made it to Hyejane in Haeundae!' proof-of-visit photo.

Celebrity signatures hung near the checkout counter

Near the checkout counter there were signatures from tons of celebrities, which really drove home that this is a famous restaurant that's been on TV. Thanks to Hyejane Gomjangeo, I got to wrap up my Busan trip dinner perfectly. Next time I visit Busan, I think I'll work up the courage to try the salt-grilled live hagfish at Hyejane San Gomjangeo.
