Chef Cho is a fruit fresh cream cake shop in the middle of Sweet Park, the basement food hall at Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam in Seocho, Seoul. A weekend afternoon visit meant about 15 minutes in line for a Real Mango Rose No.1 cake (56,000 won), boxed with an ice pack, a cutting knife and a birthday candle so it travelled easily. Today I'm bringing a takeout review from Chef Cho, the popup cake shop at Sweet Park in Shinsegae Gangnam that everyone's been talking about.

Where Chef Cho is in Shinsegae Gangnam, and its opening hours

Chef Cho is in Sweet Park, B1 of Shinsegae Department Store Gangnam, at 176 Sinbanpo-ro, Seocho-gu, Seoul. It's open daily from 10:30 to 20:30, offers takeout, and you can park in the Shinsegae Department Store parking lot.

This Gangnam cake shop is about a 3-minute walk underground from Exit 3 of Express Bus Terminal Station. It sits right in the center of Sweet Park, so even first-time visitors can find it easily.

What the Sweet Park cake counter looks like

Inside the Sweet Park popup, Chef Cho had a sign displayed noting its selection as one of the '4 Kings' on the TV show Masters of Life. There were whole cakes as well as several kinds of delicious-looking slice cakes lined up, fun to browse one by one.

There was also a sign noting the use of 100% dairy fresh cream alongside what looked like fresh fruit, which built up my expectations even more.

How long is the weekend wait at Chef Cho?

The weekend wait at Chef Cho was about 15 minutes. Maybe because it was a weekend, the front of the shop was crowded with customers looking to buy dessert.

While in line, a staff member kindly took our order in advance, and after about 15 minutes of waiting, we got our dessert.

Chef Cho menu and the Real Mango Rose No.1 price

The menu included No.1 (mango, peach berry, 52% cacao chocolate whole strawberry), mini (mango, fig), slices (matcha chocolate strawberry, fig pistachio), and crêpe (fig, Sebit). Among these I ordered the Real Mango Rose No.1 (₩56,000).

With such a wide variety on the menu, choosing my dessert was a bit tough.

How the cake is boxed and what comes with it

Depending on how far you're traveling, you can add an ice pack, and the cake came packed in a neat square box. It was packed once more into a shopping bag for easier carrying, so getting it home was no hassle at all.

They also included a cutting knife so you can slice the cake right away, along with a birthday candle.

What the Real Mango Rose No.1 looks like

Opening up the Real Mango Rose No.1, thinly sliced mango was arranged beautifully like a rose. Mango jelly sat in the center, with a Chef Cho decoration on one side and a rose-gold band wrapped around the base, giving it a luxurious feel overall.

Mango was piled on generously throughout, and fruit filled the layers between the cake sheets as well. The moment the box opened, the distinct scent of mango and the sweet aroma of fresh cream hit me, building anticipation before I'd even taken a bite.

How does the mango cream cake taste?

Cutting into the mango cake, the generous mango filled every bite with sweetness and its distinct aroma. Thanks to the 100% dairy fresh cream, the cream itself was rich yet soft, with the sweetness holding up nicely.

The cream wasn't pure white but had a slight yellow tint, which made it look even more appetizing. The sponge wasn't too firm or too soft — fluffy and tender, it practically melted the moment it hit my mouth.

Overall, the balance between mango, cream and sponge worked well, so instead of feeling heavy, I got more of that fresh, fruity sweetness. It's a cake that's great to share with family on an anniversary or birthday, and the No.1 size was a good fit for about 5 people.

If you're looking for a mango cake with both a luxurious look and great taste, I'd recommend Chef Cho's Real Mango Rose.
