Daegu beef barbecue anniversary dinner with kale jangajji: Gogi 9dan

In short

Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch is a beef barbecue restaurant on Chimsannam-ro in Buk-gu, Daegu. For a wedding anniversary the writer booked a Wednesday 7pm table and ordered half platters of flower short rib and fresh rib plus the 18,000 won 9dan set (Korean beef yukhoe, pork kimchi jjigae, jjolmyeon, sushi), wrapping the beef in kale jangajji (soy-pickled kale) and finishing at the free dessert corner. Half platters cost exactly half the meat price, and the playroom at Gogi 9dan makes it work for an anniversary and an everyday family dinner alike.

Last week on the 9th was my husband's and my wedding anniversary. Since it's a special day, I searched for somewhere special to eat and ended up at Gogi 9dan, a well-known spot in Buk-gu, Daegu. With two kids to raise, a fancy date isn't really our thing anymore — good meat is what makes us happiest these days haha. Here's the story of how Gogi 9dan made our special day even better.

Where is Gogi 9dan Chimsan Direct Branch, and how do reservations and parking work?

Parking and walking in, I was struck by how grand the place felt. The facilities were great and there were tons of staff, plus quite a few serving robots. It really felt like the owner had invested a lot into this place. And of course, plenty of customers too. I visited after booking a table for Wednesday at 7pm.

Can you bring kids to Gogi 9dan? There's a playroom

This Buk-gu, Daegu favorite has a playroom, making it easy to dine out with kids! There weren't any special play equipment, but there were drawing supplies, a claw machine, and a game console, which was plenty to keep a kid entertained.

Half platters of flower short rib and fresh rib, plus the 18,000 won 9dan set

There are so many cuts of beef on the menu, and they all look delicious. If you order the 9dan set, you get Korean beef yukhoe (raw beef tartare), pork kimchi jjigae, jjolmyeon (spicy chewy noodles), and sushi for just ₩18,000 — you really have to order it. I got half a portion of flower short rib and half a portion of fresh rib. Some places charge a bit more per half-portion, but at this Buk-gu, Daegu favorite, ordering half means paying exactly half the price of the meat — even better.

What side dishes come with the beef?

After ordering, they set out the side dishes.

Every dish looked neat and tasty. The salad wasn't just plain lettuce — it looked like butterhead, which isn't cheap... makes you wonder if the owner is loaded haha. There was japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) too, which the kids loved.

Our ordered meat arrived 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 look at that marbling... 🤤

They grilled it for us right away.

How the 9dan set's jjolmyeon, yukhoe and sushi arrive

While the meat was grilling, the 9dan set arrived — check out that spread. Not only can you try everything at a low price, but the set portions weren't skimpy at all; each item came out as generously as if you'd ordered it on its own.

The jjolmyeon had lots of vegetables mixed in, which I liked. Mixing it up and taking a bite, the chewy noodles were well coated in a tangy-sweet sauce that really perked up my appetite.

The yukhoe had a soft yet chewy texture. The sweetish sauce combined with the nuttiness of sesame oil for a really savory depth. My older kid practically ate all of it... and then shouted for another bowl!

Flower short rib: first bite with salt, then on top of sushi

The cut was thick enough that it seemed to lock in the juices. You can tell the inside is nice and moist, right? Sliced into thick chunks, I couldn't wait to dig in. Watching it sizzle away on the grill made my mouth water even more — writing this is making me want it again.

The first bite, basic as ever, went with salt. The salty seasoning brought out the clean, nutty flavor of the meat perfectly. As I bit into the thick cut, the juices came through moist, and the deep beefy aroma grew stronger with each chew — confirming once again that the first bite of beef really should be with salt.

I tried it with several different pairings. Honestly, beef goes with just about anything, but putting it on top of sushi is my personal favorite. The tangy-sweet vinegared rice met the nutty, juicy beef in a combination that worked way better than I expected. The rice's clean flavor cut through the richness of the meat while blending smoothly in the mouth — the kind of taste that has you making more and more.

How is fresh rib different from flower short rib? Kale jangajji wraps

Next up was fresh rib on the grill. The rib had close-set score marks too, and the marbling looked delicious.

As soon as it hit the grill, it sizzled away beautifully, browning nicely on both sides — the outside looked mouthwatering while the inside stayed moist with juices. It was cooked so well it made you drool just looking at it.

There was kale jangajji (pickled kale) on the table. Wrapping the beef in kale jangajji added a tangy, salty note to the meat's rich, nutty flavor — a really great combination. Kale's distinct aroma and crisp texture also cut through the richness of the meat, making for a clean bite. The fresh rib had a slightly firmer chew than the flower short rib. Not tough at all, though — more like a chewy texture that released more of that nutty beef aroma the longer you chewed it, a different kind of appeal.

Ending with pork kimchi jjigae — order extra rice

Once we finished the meat, they set the kimchi jjigae on the induction burner. There was so much pork in it that ordering extra rice was inevitable.

Mixing rice into the pork kimchi jjigae broth was a genuine rice-thief moment. The spicy, tangy broth combined with the savory pork, and the well-cooked kimchi was soft to chew, delivering a burst of umami with every spoonful. The warm broth soaked into the rice so well that even after being full, I kept eating.

Our family cleared every plate for the first time in a while.

The dessert corner and our anniversary verdict on Gogi 9dan

This Buk-gu, Daegu favorite also had a variety of desserts. They even had Starbucks coffee, and were popping rice cakes fresh on the spot, handing them to the kids to snack on. We got to enjoy a generous dessert too.

I wanted to spend our anniversary happily eating good meat, and from the meat itself down to the side dishes, everything was satisfying overall. It had been a while since my husband and I just sat and talked over great meat — turns out that kind of ordinary moment is exactly what feels good. Gogi 9dan delivered on both taste and atmosphere for our special day! Next time, I'll have to come back with the kids for a family meal :)
